Ever tried to convince your kids they needed to clean their rooms or something awful would happen? I've heard of everything from taking the offending toys and/or clothes and holding them for ransom (tried it myself--it didn't work very well) to tossing the clothes onto the drive way so the kids would have to pick them up on their way in from the bus after school. I'm not sure that one worked for the frustrated mother, either. Well, in Holly Remkes' tale of The Gunny Sack Man, we learn about two little girls who are always making messes. When their mother gets totally frustrated about their inability to keep their room clean for five minutes, she tells them about a man who comes to kids houses to check and see if their rooms are clean. If it's a mess, he'll sneak in while they're gone and eat all of the toys and clothes on the floor. If their room is clean, he'll leave them each a treat or other present under their pillows. When asked about her first book, Holly states her mother told her the story of The Gunny Sack Man when she was a little girl, and she has used it with her own children, finding it a great way to motivate them to take care of their own messes. The rhyming text perks the ear and cute storyline are bound to interest all of your little ones to take care of their things in record time. About the Author
Holly Remkes lives near Fillmore, Utah with her husband, David, and their seven children. In addition to writing children's books, she paints and illustrates. Being a mother, though, she has to be creative and will sometimes have an unfinished painting hanging on the wall where she can only get one brush stroke in before running off to help one of her kids. Holly loves being a mom and hopes to help other families have fun while learning the lessons of life.

Absolutely a wonderful idea and the book is a keeper!!

If your child believes in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, but doesn't like to clean their room and pickup after themselves, this book is for you! The Gunny Sack Man comes at unexpected times to see if a child's room is clean. If it is not clean, when he picks up the room he eats some of the things left out as he needs energy to complete the cleaning job, and then fills his bag and sneaks out. If he shows up and the room is clean, he leaves a treat for the child. The child cannot see the Gunny Sack Man because he sneaks in and sneaks out. The book is written in catchy rhyme.
The book was formatted fine for the Kindle. Some pages had the writing above or below the picture; other pages had the writing over the picture and it was still easy to read. I am glad this book is also in print, as I will likely be purchasing copies for friends and family who are new parents/have young children. Absolutely a wonderful idea and the book is a keeper!

I like this book. My little guy is only 18 months so it's a little old for him - but I think it will be a good life learning book for him when he is a little older.

Clean Your Room! If You Don't The Gunny Sack Man Will Come and Eat Your Toys Think About That Little Girls and Boys!

This is a roughly written picture book with pretty average illustrations. The text rhymes but does seem forced at times. Sometimes it doesn't make sense such as "Would you like him to come over and cat? No idea what that means. A good idea for both a picture book plot and way to scare kids into cleaning their rooms though.
Basically the Gunny Sack Man is an old man who visits children's rooms and if their room is messy he eats their toys which fuel his cleaning. If however children have cleaned their room and he doesn't have to clean he will leave a toy or piece of candy under their pillows. Great idea for a character but not as well written story as it could have been.
