Review
Karen O'Toole was born to write "Orphans of Katrina." She has crafted this book with love and care... What struck me most about this book is Karen O'Toole's very compelling and creative writing style. She grabs you with the first sentence and doesn't let you go till the very end. --Rebecca of Amazon, "The Rebecca Review" Top Amazon Reviewer.

ORPHANS OF KATRINA: KAREN O'TOOLE
By Stephen G. Lonefeather :
I want to preface my endorsement of this book by saying this: That this review is coming from an older man who is a strong, vibrant, woodsman, Alaska guide, and ex-Bering Sea fisherma. Some might say I'm the stuff a strong man is suppose to be made of. Well, I'm here to tell you that when a little five foot three inch Louisiana lady friend of mine asked me to read Karen's book; to get an idea of what those rescuers went through, and why she still takes care of dispossessed animals from that storm - I was humbled, and very glad I didn't read it on a crowded bus. Because if you believe you are of the `tougher cut' and don't want anyone to see your soft underbelly then you'd better sit alone with this one behind a closed door. I swear this book had me in tears more times than I can count.
Ms. O'toole's recount of the dedication and sacrifices made by the people (herself included) who were parts of the grass-roots animal rescue groups who waded right smack into the muck of post Katrina-New Orleans, and the surrounding communities; despite the toxic threats to their own health, is an extraordinarily in-your-face portrait of sins and salvation. Karen's words and pictures, her eye witness accounts of numerous rescues, and the heart wrenching perils of those furry castaways left behind or lost in the melee of a mandatory human evacuation, is brutally honest and poignant. I'm sure everyone involved, including the animals, wear scars that will last to eternity, and I hope every reader of this work will pause at times to breathe a quiet prayer for them all.
Her portrayal clearly shows that these civilian rescuers were every bit as valiant as our military boys and girls who were sent there under orders. The camaraderie that quickly developed between the myriad clandestine rescue groups and the military throughout the area was exemplary; proving that right is right, regardless of what `the powers that be' might say.
Her thoughtful insights on how to better prepare our pets in the event of a tragedy - God forbid, if anything like this were ever to happen again, should immediately be taken to heart by all pet owners.
I suggest that this work be on the shelf of every American school library, in every classroom that teaches anything about human fortitude, and in the mind of anyone who needs a first-hand reminder of what `real' ordinary American people can do, should to, in times of crisis in this country. Not only for the human element, but for the precious animals that are so often the very glue that holds people's lives together. This book gives us a much needed reminder to get up off the couch and become a volunteer, a warrior ... no matter if it be front line or backstage.

A must-read for all animal lovers - I loved this book!
By DL
I thoroughly enjoyed this well written, inspirational and emotionally moving book. O'Toole provides insight into "life in the trenches" rescuing the furry victims of Hurricane Katrina. She accurately captures the heartbreaking situation down there and manages to tell her story with some humor thrown in. The book also wisely provides concrete and helpful advice on how to protect your own pets during a disaster. She also provides valuable information on the current state of homeless animals and how anyone can help all of those homeless pets today who continue to suffer. Animals are blessed to have such a warrior angel like Karen O'Toole in their corner. If what happened to the animals down there makes you sad, then adopt O'Toole's "git 'er done" attitude and go out and locally volunteer to help those innocent creatures who continue to suffer! It doesn't take much to take a shelter dog for a walk.

A great read.

As a volunteer who worked to reunite Katrina survivors with their pets I reluctantly picked up O'Toole's book. The subject matter had me anticipating a cover-to-cover sob-fest. But I put personal reluctance aside to give the animals and the people who went through that disaster a voice they desperately need. And I was glad I did!
Orphans of Katrina documents from the perspective of an individual rescuer what it was like on the ground. Sure, the worst of it: the sorrowful scenes, harrowing abuses and infuriating oversights, but also the best: how determined people put their personal comforts aside to devote themselves to getting animals out of trouble and to safety. We learn what it was like from someone who had her 'boots on the ground'. We hear heartrending accounts from pet owners who became unwillingly separated from their animals, some haunted to this day by the memory of animals they never got a chance to see again, and some fortunate enough to have been reunited with their beloved pet thanks to conscientious rescuers.
Katrina's aftermath literally brought to the surface much of the ugly side of humanity's relationship with non-human animals. In this regard, Orphans of Katrina would have been just another Katrina book if it had just described what happened in that storm's aftermath. But Karen goes beyond that. She links the lessons of the past to actions we can take today, and issues we can ill afford to ignore: disaster preparedness, pet overpopulation, the challenges of today's "shelter" system. The "Surprising Chain of Events, and the Many Volunteers Involved, When You Don't Spay/Neuter" is especially informative.
O'Toole's book is presented in short-story format, so you can pick it up and start reading anywhere. Her writing is sharp and to-the-point, and her wit provides much-needed comic relief throughout. Despite the difficult subject matter this is a good read, informative, and thought-provoking and therefore highly recommended.
