Best Audition Teacher. Period. End of Story.

19 years ago I was a dyslexic actor who garnered great theater reviews and was rockin' scenes in Wynn Handman's class, YET I couldn't get a single callback for televsion or film..not even one callback! I felt cursed. Luckily my then-agent, a brash Jersey broad, told me to study auditioning with a guy named Tim Phillips, and to let her know when I felt ready to audtion, because she would not be submitting me for anything until that time; what's more, she agreed not to drop me as a client till that time. Well, 6 months later I told her I felt ready to audition and compete for jobs in television and film...3 months later Law & Order combined 3 small parts into a meaty guest star role (along side Sam Rockwell), then Mike Nichols cast me in 3 scenes opposite Jack Nicholson, and I landed a lead in indie-feature, Federal Hill- all within 60 days! In short, my life completely changed, in fact, utilizing Tim's techniques, all I needed was 10 minutes to prepare. Even more, I found then, and I find now- that once you are on a set doing the actual part, all you ever need is the work that Tim teaches. To satisfy all the details (of his technique) gives you the performance. But again, acting is a sport, so it's best to stay sharp by sticking with Tim's work!

This is a Must Buy for Any Actor at Every Level!

I have read this book cover to cover & have had the pleasure of working with Tim Phillips for the last 3 years. In that timeframe I have booked no less than 22 feature films, Recurring roles on 3 TV shows & Guest starred on 10 other TV shows. Page by page Tim will save you Years of pain, heartache & lost opportunities and that feeling I Used to have for years...that I was a much better actor than I had auditioned. Or that my readings were much better at home or in the car, but Not in the room. Those days are OVER! Step by Step Tim will take you through his Sherlock Holmesing the material, which will allow you to never look at a script the same way ever again. Then he will guide you to a Human, Personal and Powerful audition each & every time...IF and Only IF you read, re read put it his methods into practice.

I have had the pleasure of working with Tim Phillips in LA and he is simply amazing. I'm not into guru teachers, or hype. Tim is simply the real deal and this book is just an extension of his craft and talent as an amazing teacher, coach and human being. Wish Hollywood had more like him.

Good resource for Hoosier Hot Shot fans

Dick Stodghill does a nice job presenting the life stories of the 3 primary members of the Hot Shots. I found some of the extra material, such as the several pages about "typical life in small town in Indiana way back then" a little tedious, but some folks might enjoy the reminiscing.
Contains a very thorough discography and filmography. I would have given it 5 stars, but the illustrations are a little blurry. Not the authors fault, but it does distract a tad from the overall quality of the book.
Recommended for Hot Shot fans, and students of old-time jazz/pop and entertainment in the early 20th century.

Life-spanning

This book has managed to answer so many questions and fill in so many blanks for me. I only recently discovered the work of Chris D., having listened to a wide range of music, but was instantly excited by his lyrics and delivery. This book not only displays his lyrical skill, but also his insight. This book isn't just about a man's history in a musical movement; it's about life's regrets and willful accomplishments. I would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of their tastes in music or literature.

I gave this book to my niece that is in H.S. and she loved it! This book is a wonderful and useful guide to help Hispanic students not just get into college but succeed. It offers very practical information as well as a good dose of inspiration as the author quotes many Latino students who overcame many obstacles to make it to college and many extremely successful Latino professionals.

Reflections From The Heart.

This book strengthened my faith in being loved.

The poetry touches on the highs and flights that we allow connections with others to take us on. More than anything, it shows what love is like when you take time to listen to and heed its lessons when it's ready for you. These lessons can come from different and unexpected people and places. The author shares the journey and growth that she experienced in various situations. Overall, I felt that her desire to take heed to love's lessons prepared her to be able to enjoy the resulting blessing.

I really enjoyed the book and will make time to read it again tomorrow.

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

The best book I've read on figure drawing

Drawing has been a lifelong interest of mine, but until recently, I was barely able to draw much more than a stick figure. Around a year ago, I decided to seriously devote efort to learning to draw. It's a great skill to have, requires little in the way of materials and can be fun. SInce that decision, I've purchased and used about 10 books to drawing, mostly figure drawing. this was the last book on the subject I purchased, and, I am convinced, the last one I need. Hampton lays out what you need to become a better artist. I believe that anyone who is interested in the subject could pick up this book, and within a few hours see a marked difference in their skill at drawing. What I found the most helpful is that on sections where he is going over muscles and shapes, he uses color to call out what he is talking about. If you are interested in any type of drawing that involves the human figure, definitely take a look at this book.

If drawing solid figures with life and conviction is your goal, this is your book. The overall message is drawing from the inside out (as opposed to flat contour line drawing) by combining strong gesture lines with solid three -dimensional forms to achieve a sculptured and lively figure drawing. This book also teaches the lost art of analyzing form and constructive anatomy. Michael Hampton gives a simple procedure on how to approach the drawings from the ground up using ideas such as line of action, rhythm, and tilt to act as an anchor for adding basic forms and shapes on, and finally anatomy. Muscles are more easily learned when they are reduced to basic shapes that are easy to memorize and locate on the figure. This book reveals shapes for all the major muscles and bones of the human form. Artists interested in any discipline that involves the figure will greatly benefit from the lessons and ideas brought forth in this book.

Awful

This book contains very little original thought and amounts to 40 or fewer normal sized pages of repetition and direct quotes. The author seemed to think that he could pass this off as a real book by enlarging the font size, absurdly expanding the margins and inserting numerous exhibits. This is a very poorly published book that has no business selling for $29. I am curious as to why only 2 of the prior reviews are negative, since this is such an obvious fraud.

A complete waste of time

I bought this book in the Kindle version for two reasons. Since 1992 I've read just about everything written by or about Munger and Buffet and also because the reviews were so glowing.

How cool - some excellant new insights into these two great thinkers. What a complete waste of time and what completely misleading reviews. I thought it was poorly written, redundent from chapter to chapter and the only things that were of any value were the original quotes taken from the great men themselves.

It's hard for me to believe that Warren approved this book and allowed the use of his copywritten materials for such a completely frivolous and obvious attempt to cash in on the extreme interest in all things Berkshire. Save your money. If you read the first couple of pages, you've got the entire content. I suffered through the whole book in a few hours expecting it to pick up at any time. It did - when it ended.

How about for folks that are new to Berkshire? Again, you must be kidding. The Warren Buffet way is a much, much better 'intro' if you're not interested in getting into the more detailed and longer ones (Of Permanent Value is great, but can't be read in a single day).

I should have known this one was a rip from the extemely poor graphic of the book cover and really thin description. My own fault for falling for a complete dud.

I've never had such a bad book from Amazon on any subject before. I'd return it if I could. Thankfully it was just the $10 for the Kindle version.

The Four Filters are a search for understandable first-class businesses, with enduring competitive advantage, accompanied by first-class management, and available at a bargain price. They help us frame our investing process correctly, and they help prevent foolish and costly investment losses. For me and for you, there is another treasure hidden in these words: how to improve and optimise our decision making process? How do we develop a better understanding of a business, its present, its earnings and its future? Charlie Munger said: "We read a lot. I do not know anyone who's wise who does not read a lot". But there is another factor and that is "temperament": We should learn to use probability in our favour and avoid risk. The Four Filters function as an effective time-tested formula for investing success. They serve a very useful guide for assessing intrinsic value and sensible price. They highlight and reveal the good prospect and eliminate its bad prospect for investments. Using the Four Filters, we can decrease the element of chance and increase our probability of focussing and finding a quality bargain. Digest this book and you will be rich.

Concise Useful Principles High on Content

Understanding Other People is well titled; a useful, earthy and concise book, especially for someone who hasn't been through one of the "Leadership" seminars. I finally settled on four stars for the merits of the book with one star off for the "demerits." Flaxington is succinct and largely descriptive. The use of the term "secrets" in the subtitle is good marketing, everyone wants to know "secrets."

Flaxington's premises are basically that you're going to get along easily with some people, with others it may not be easy but if you understand what's going on you may be able to make it work, and in other cases you either live with the situation or move on, but you're not going to change it. Straightforward enough, and Flaxington's value added are principles, context and the real and rare strength of the book, a clear and honest assessment that you're not going to change other people. The first chapter is a good reminder to check our own perspectives, but unless you're reading this at someone else's suggestion, there's a good probability you're above average in self awareness.

The Chapter "Don't Assume I Know What You Mean" is valuable enough to justify reading the book. The tools and thoughts from that chapter are universally useful.

The two "demerit" areas, based upon my "filters," are the lack of context for DISC and not addressing personality disorders. The DISC behavior style assessment is one of many communication/personality/behavior/value diagnostics; Myers-Briggs may be the most widely recognized. It would be good to know, briefly, why the author believes DISC is a good choice relative to other alternatives. She does state that it is validated and proven. Flaxington fully discloses she is a franchisee of the DISC system and this comment is not a criticism of DISC. Second, and the reason I took off one star, none of this really applies if you're interacting with someone with a serious psychological problem, a narcissistic bully for example, not just a behavioral style preference. That's a huge topic in itself but it's necessary and worth at least a short chapter in a book titled Understanding Other People, especially since estimates suggest that a significant and increasing portion of the population exhibits serious personality disorder symptoms.

Is it time for a filter change?

There are plenty of business books available out there to help us better understand the behavior of others. The problem I have found with most of them is that they are written from the perspective of the clinical psycologist, not from the persective of the business leader, rendering them of little or limited value. No so with UNDERSTANDING OTHER PEOPLE: THE FIVE SECRETS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR, by Beverly Flaxington.

The book begins by examining the many built in filters we use to view the world. Our filters don't necessarily make us right or wrong, they simply determine our viewpoint. One person may be devastated by the death of Michael Jackson. The next person may view it as, "One less pedophile in the world." One person may view Barack Obama as the Messiah, the next person may view him as the anti-Christ. These are just the filters each person sees things with.

Flaxington teaches us that by being aware of our filters, we are more cognizant of the fact that we are not necessarily right or wrong, we're just us. This concept leads us to understanding the principle of "It's all about me." The author cogently explains this simple truth by asking the reader to consider a time when we went out of our way to help someone, supposedly out of our own goodness, only to be offended when the recipient failed to "according to our filters" properly thank us.

The book continues in subsequent chapters to explain how these filters create difficulties in relationships, work environments and every day life with those around us. The concept being, by more clearly understanding why we, and those we interact with, react the way we do, we will begin to find ways to work towards what Dr. Stephen Covey calls, "Win-win, or no deal" and "seek first to understand, then to be understood."

I will stop here as I don't wish to give away additional content. The book is a quick, easy read. It is very well written and you will find lessons with immediate applicability.

Everyone should read and own this book

This fabulous, concise, wisdom rich book is helping me to better understand myself in addition to others. The 5 secrets to understanding human behavior are revealed in a way that is easy to understand and incorporate into one's daily personal and professional life. I find these tools more natural to use than the other tools I am familiar with, including but not limited to Myers-Briggs, and Enneagram.

Using the Disc behavioral and core value tools, I have a clearer insight into human nature. `Don't assume I know what you mean' is one of the good personal reminders to place more context around my messages.

I intend to keep this book close to me until the 5 secrets have become a natural way of life for me, meanwhile I will pick up a few more copies for my friends. You should too!

In most races, the back of the packers (like me) never get to see the front-runners after the race begins. This course looped back upon itself. Seeing the lead and second runner, running in near sprint form, up the wooded trail was a sight I will not soon forget. Eyes blazing with fire, hats and beards covered with frost, and legs pumping in perfect form were a sight to behold.

"Oh, so that is what it looks like to run fast," is what went through my head. And they did it for 34 miles making six creek crossings, up and down innumerable hills, through wooded trails laced with roots and rocks, up and down flights of rickety wood stairs, across nearly rotten boards cover¬ing other creeks, carrying all they needed so they wouldn’t stop at aid sta¬tions, and then smiling and enjoying life afterwards with the rest of us, but the front runners are not like the rest of us...

Captivating Storytelling

I read this book during our recent record-breaking blizzard in Northern Virginia. With our power out, a roaring fire in the fireplace and a flashlight in hand, I felt as though I were sitting at a campsight listening to Pastor Craig tell stories of courage, determination and faith. His stories had me chuckling one moment, wiping a tear the next. He gives great insight into the world of marathon and ultra-marathon runners, both physically and emotionally. Craig participates in these challenging runs to raise money for very worthwhile causes, all the while battling serious and life-threatening health issues himself. This interesting book will encourage both runners and non-runners alike and strengthen your faith.

I started reading Constant Forward Motion not knowing anything about marathons or any kind of running competition, and finished feeling like I had actually participated in one! Craig describes each one of his accomplishments in a way that makes you feel like you are running right beside him in each one. His faith in God is proven through each race, which I must confess that I would not have the strength to complete! A story that draws you in from the starting line...

You will grab a blanket to ward off the damp chill of the Boston Marathon, and turn on the fan during the sweltering heat of the ultra-marathons. You will literally laugh out loud at Craig's candid observations and commentary. You will cringe at near-disasters. You will sober as the reality of a diagnosis threatens, a dream is altered, a major bump in the road looms ominously ahead. You have been there, too. Run alongside Craig as he shares his journey and how faith is an integral part of his daily training. In reading this encouraging book, you will realize that a doctor's diagnosis, or the horrible "C" word, is indeed not the end! You will be reminded that "Life is good; God is better." This is a great read for the athlete, the outdoor-enthusiast, sportsman, or someone facing a critical health diagnosis; a wonderful reminder that there is beauty all around, there is a silver lining, and there is always Hope.
