Business school changed the way I see the world, and more importantly, opened doors for me to explore new things, travel around the world, and work with some of the most respected global business leaders. And it all started with a simple thought of wanting to get an MBA, and a few simple steps I took to prepare for the GMAT.

It was late January in 2005 when I decided to apply for business schools. The deadlines are in early March, which means on top of getting letters of recommendations, writing personal essays, and getting the applications ready, I have to take the GMAT within a month of time. I didn't have the luxury of time to compare different prep courses or to find a perfect tutor, so I decided to tackle the test in my own way. Fortunately, after a lot of hard work, I came out of the test center surprised and ecstatic.

I never thought I could score a near perfect score (780 out of 800) on the GMAT, not to mention doing so within that one month of studying time I had.

I've always wanted to share this experience with people who are thinking about taking the GMAT but don't know where to start. I started writing this book after business school while working at Sony Headquarter Strategy Office in Tokyo and it took me almost two years to finish. In this book, I share with you how I planned my study, how I kept myself motivated, some of the mistakes I made, and techniques I found most useful. You might find this book different from other test preparation books, as it is very personal about my own experience. But hopefully you will learn a few things that can help you with your test preparation.

If there is one piece of advice I can give to future GMAT takers, it would be to plan ahead and commit to your study plan. The GMAT is not rocket science, and with dedication and hard work, you too will be able to achieve the score you want.

About the Author
Founder/owner of a creative entertainment studio, Brandon Wu is a 30-year-old entrepreneur who believes that everything is possible. Failing the SAT in high school did not stop him from getting into the university of his dreams. After two transfers and countless hours of hard work he eventually graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with an Economics degree. (BA Econ,2002)

After university Brandon enjoyed spending most of his energy in the high-tech industry working with passionate artists and intelligent engineers. However, in the cold San Francisco February of 2005, he decided to leave and pursue new opportunities in the world of business just one month before the deadline for all the business schools he wanted to apply. With so much to study for the GMAT, and not much time, he developed a unique way to study that enabled him to score 780 (99 percentile) on the GMAT within a short amount of time. He received his MBA from Marshall School of Business (University of Southern California) with a scholarship.

After business school, Brandon worked as a Manager in the strategy division at the Sony headquarters in Tokyo where he spent much of his time with top executives from all over the world incubating new ideas and analyzing existing businesses. While at Sony Brandon was featured on Sony's global website as a success story of Sony's MBA Program. 30 DAY GMAT SUCCESS was written during these years in Japan. Everyday after work, Brandon would find a quiet coffee shop, and write down the journey he took while preparing for the GMAT hoping that his experience would one day benefit others who are in the similar dire situation he once was with just one month left to prepare for the GMAT.

Brandon left Sony in December 2009 to follow his entrepreneurial heart. He now lives in sunny California with his amazing wife.

Data Sufficiency Zero to Hero

This books is worth the money just for the Data Sufficiency advice that Brandon gives you. Data Sufficiency has to be the most hated section on the GMAT, but after reading through this section in the book and practicing Brandon's strategy i have greatly improved. I'm talking i have gone from a Data Sufficiency zero to hero. This book gives you the strategies you will need to get a great score on the GMAT. That is the difference between this book and many other GMAT books available. His study plan can be complicated and is not for everyone, but the real gold is the strategies that are found in this book.

Extremely Average - Don't waste your money

This book is fairly useless for anyone who knows the basics about applying to business school - Where to register for thr GMAT, How much it costs, Rescheduling the test etc. All this information is pretty much available online, you don't need a book for that. It doesnt really provide a "1-Month-Study-Plan" as the name seems to suggest. It gives a very high level overview of the topics and by no means does it even cover 50% of the topics. I thought it was a total waste of money. I would stick to online forums and studying actively.

Easily the worst GMAT book I have run across

Unfortunately, I strongly agree with the other reviewers who gave negative comments: this book is a complete waste of money, and it likely won't help you with your GMAT preparation.

The author aced his test -- great job! However, doing it and teaching it are quite different things in practice. I don't doubt that the author intends to convey his success tips to help others, but the content of the book does not help his cause.

First, the book is printed double-spaced throughout; it therefore provides less content than what 184 pages suggest. Second, "Introduction: The GMAT" and "Study Schedule" chapters occupy the first 52 pages, leaving even fewer pages to cover anything related to essential knowledge or skills.

Moreover, when the book does get to the technical, the discussions are extremely light and lacking in depth. Here's a complete section on "The Best Piece of Advice" on AWA (remember, everything is double-spaced):

What do the graders look at the most when grading your essay? Is it your grammar?

Your vocabulary? Your ideas?

Nope. It's the length of your essay.

Actually, it's not that easy but you would be surprised by how much length-of-essay factors into your grade.

I basically went through the entire book in half hour without learning anything worthwhile. Your mileage may vary, but my own experience with the book is far less than satisfactory.

Glorious history of rock music and KSHE 95

Stunning and beautiful, this book is a glorious history of rock music, groups, concerts and the radio station that made it all happen - KSHE 95. The national role this St. Louis station played in the foundation of US rock music is almost beyond belief. The pictures and archival material makes this a book to read, share and treasure. The personalities involved are huge, especially that of GM Shelley Grafman who shines brightly in a book with many stars. JD

i loved this book. it had a lot of history in it. the history of music in st.louis. also the history of radio stations in st. louis. k-she played a major role in the st. louis area for rock history. this book brought back a lot of memories. the dj's, the music, and the stories. the stories in this book are fabulous. some are funny,some are not. the pictures are great too. photos of mick and kieth richards sitting at the chase hotel pool, of ticket stubs, and a lot more. too many to list. if you are from st. louis and listened to k-she through the years this book is for you. if you are not from st. louis and love rock and roll and the history of it,get this book. it will be one of the best books you have bought in a while.

If canines hold a special place in your heart this book will too. Do Old Dogs Dream makes a great gift for dog lovers. While the book is about old dogs, it isn't a bit sad. It celebrates their dignity, love and devotion in way that might bring a tear to your eye but never in heartbreak. Giving the proceeds to help old dogs is the icing on the Milk Bone.

I feel so in love with these characters. 4 friends with a tight bond. You have the rich kid, the headstrong one, the nut job and the freak. They have mad love for each other and the men in their lives until jealousy puts a wrap on that. Neli is the worst and everything was her fault. I loved Kim spirit and she could peep the BS from a mile away. But Ree, that man it like a God send. I love the way the author depicted his character. As ruthless as his personality is her still had a heart of pure gold.

I recently purchased the Sleep technician's pocket guide wich I enjoyed very much. The pocket format is an exceptional idea and very functional and easy to consult. However, I would like to alert you to a mistake I found on pages 32-33: the text below the titles has been repeated. The title "pen blocking" has the text to the title electrode popping.

This clearly explains the secret geometry of the universe

Cartesian geometry is not merely inconvenient, but wrong enough so that it's actively hindering our civilization. It's a blind alley, in the same way Roman numerals were.
Buckminster Fuller's most startling inventions are trivial exercises of the theory in this book.
Sorry to sound hysterical, but this is a really important book, and it's much too neglected. It should definitely NOT be out of print. It's right up there with Euclid. Fuller was a genius, but he couldn't write. Edmondson can.
Amy Edmondson worked closely with Buckminster Fuller before he died. She extracted, and explains in this book Fuller's least tractable, least appreciated concepts: His realization that the natural analytic geometry of the universe is tetrahedral. This is the stuff that people were forming study groups to try to extract from "Synergetics," and she just lays it out, in neat, logical prose with clear diagrams, and references to related scholarly literature...
Fuller (according to Edmondson) ran into tetrahedral geometry by no less than three different routes: close packing of spheres, three dimensional stabilization of an object by either compressive or tensile members. Then, as a trivial exercise, a result, there's a proof that the maximum strength homogenous truss is tetrahedral. Then, almost as an aside, it happens that all the regular solids (except the icosahedron) have volumes that are integral multiples of the volume of a tetrahedron!
Right about then, I began to think that everything I know about geometry is, not wrong eactly, but just not the right way. You know, like finding arabic numerals when you've been using roman numerals your whole life.
I was totally blown away, and I was expecting to be bored spitless.

A fabulous translation of a great thinker's work

Buckminster Fuller's "Synergetics" is a fabulous text, but grasping its words in their fullness is challenging. I have gone to the depths on some of the sections of that book: the rewards are great, but the cost is also tremendous.

Professor Amy Edmondson provides a translation for the ages in A Fuller Explanation. While honoring the work of Fuller, she presents the ideas in a way that can be understood by anyone.

To understand how things work, it's critical to understand the nature of physical structure. These concepts are rarely discussed unless you study physics or material science in detail. That's a darn shame, because understanding structure is critical to understanding how nature creates structure -- and how it's so different than manmade structure.

This book is back in print -- it's just not available at Amazon yet.

Synergetics is an incredible work, a nearly exhaustive commitment of Fuller's discovered principles to text. It also is outrageously obscure, difficult to read and use, and mostly ignored for those reasons. This text bridges the gap, and brings many of the jewels of Synergetics within the reach of ordinary mortals. Well-written with the cooperation of Bucky himself, and now mercifully back in print at an accessible price, this is a must-have.

It is interesting to look at these books and see how trends have and have not changed over the last four decades. The strength of this book are the pictures. Because there is a lack of pictures from the Kennedy's and other presidential administrations, this book lacks some of the intrigue it could have.
Having said that, the pictures that it does have are facinating. To see how the trends have continued and changed over the years is a reflection not only of the administration but of the United States over time.

The White House: it is both the most recognized home in the United States and, in some ways, the most mysterious. At the forefront of American history for so many years, the mansion is infused with generations of holiday traditions, but the number of people who actually get to glimpse the December White House in all its decorative glory is very small.
Jennifer B. Pickens visited the White House for the first time in 2004. She was so impressed with First Lady Laura Bush’s “A Season of Merriment and Melody” theme that Pickens wanted to share the joyous experience with her friends and family. She was disappointed to discover that no book had been written about Christmas at the White House and decided to remedy the gap. The result is a collection of charming photographs and detailed descriptions of the efforts of nine recent First Ladies to make the White House festive and enchanted during the holiday season. Pickens also includes excerpts from the First Ladies’ own reflections.
Pickens’ descriptions of the decorations, along with the work that goes into them, are thorough and enjoyable. Not only does she show talent at choosing words and phrases, but she also includes a host of fascinating facts about things like the weight of the traditional gingerbread house, for example. Charmingly, she manages to show glimpses of the presidents and their families as they celebrate: a playful picture of Nancy Reagan sitting on Santa’s lap (who happens to be President Reagan), and a picture of George W. Bush decorating a cookie.
This delightful collection of essays and photographs is refreshingly apolitical. Pickens only seems to be concerned with enchantment and beauty, which is evident in a paragraph about Christmas in President Nixon’s White House: “The vibrant décor contrasted with the dark mood of the political scene, where events were unfolding that would lead to the President’s resignation in the coming year. Yet the First Lady found comfort in a bird’s nest that she discovered in the branches of the eighteen-foot tree. During a press tour she called it ‘an omen, a sign of very good luck. I’ve heard it forever that if you get a tree with a nest, it’s good luck.’”
Christmas at the White House has wide appeal and is sure to delight lovers of Christmas and Americana.

About the Author

Jennifer Boswell Pickens is a White House social expert, speaker, and event planner. She has personally interviewed dozens of White House insiders, including First Families, social secretaries, chiefs of staff, presidential aides, and White House Executive Residence staff. Her first book, holiday top-seller Christmas at the White House, was the first to fully and accurately document the lavish public and private Christmas decorations, celebrations, themes, traditions, and memories of more than 50 years of First Families. And, like its predecessor, Pets at the White House includes intimate contributions from living former First Families. An accomplished historian, Pickens has served on the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board, Friends of the SMU Library, and on other civic and prominent boards.

Beautiful Book, Great Christmas Gift

I was really impressed at the quality of this book. The author published this book in the U.S. at a green printer. I wonder how many books on Amazon can claim that? It's a nice, heavy book (you definitely get your $75 worth and the size would make it a nice gift). I was impressed, too, by the fact that the author was able to get all six living first ladies to write their Christmas memories for the book, and includes information and interviews from family members and former White House staff. I LOVE all the old, wonderful photos -- you can literally track the evolution of modern photography from the 60s to the Bush years by looking at how they shot rooms and people. For that matter, you can track the evolution of how people decorated for Christmas, with each season becoming more and more lavish. It's a great book for anyone who loves Christmas decorations or who loves the White House.

wonderful book

This book is absolutely gorgeous! It is filled with over 500 beautiful images tracing Christmas from The Kennedy years through the Bush years. Not only are the images stunning the writing is truly interesting and the forwards by the living First Ladies are remarkably personal touch. We are planning on giving this book to several friends and family members for Christmas this year.

Gorgeous Christmas Book!

This is a beautiful gift for anyone who loves the White House, Christmas and history. It is a gorgeous book. I gave one as a gift to my parents and had to buy another to keep for our coffee table. The pages are beautiful and the pictures are fascinating! I was amazed that the author was able to get introductions to each chapter/Presidency from the former First Ladies and family members. And it is so interesting to see what each of them say about their Christmas memories. Love this book!
