'Turned Out' is a thrilling urban drama based on and inspired by the true story of a young, Ethiopian woman.
Deetee, and her mother are caught in the middle of a dangerous territorial battle waged by Warlords virtually ruling the country. The only way to escape the nightmare is by paying large sums of money to a ring of villainous smugglers who transport refugees across the border. Deetee must leave her mother behind and makes it safely to America. Once joined with her aunt in Buffalo, NY, their urgent mission is clear: raise the money needed to get Deetee's mother to safety in America - before it's too late. Facing hard choices, she's lured north across the border into Canada, in a seemingly chic social scene of the glamorous, powerful and wealthy, but soon discovers that she has really been thrust into the sinister world of "High Society Escorts" - a world no less dangerous than the one she escaped from.
Note that the story takes place in America and that Ethiopia only serves as a back story.

Grabs you from the get go
By Michael Conway
Jacques Hebert & Robert James grab you from the get-go and drag you along for the ride. There's no build-up or pussyfooting around. When you open the cover, I'd recommend bracing yourself, they don't pull any punches.
Deetee's journey is certainly a hard one, one that is faced by many people who come to America looking for a better life. We're able to really get into head and experience her internal struggle as well as what's going on on the outside. However, her fight to get a better life as well as the fight to bring her mother over from Ethiopia is a real triumph of the human spirit.
I felt that the authors sometimes tried to cram too much detail or story in the few pages they had, and it was a little confusing in at least one place, but this is really a minor complaint, and the confusion actually added to it in hindsight. Definitely good in re-reading, too.
I don't normally read books like this one, but I had a feeling to give it a go, and I certainly was rewarded for the flash of intuition. The story is grand and Deetee is a fine character, and is a role model for women and for everyone else. I'm glad I read it.

Good
By Tina
I am not usually a big fan of books set in countries such as Ethiopia - however, this book is definitely an exception to my rule. First of all, it is a gritty, exciting thriller featuring a brave young woman by the name of Deetee who is determined to get out of Ethiopia in order to live a "better" life in America.
Here is someone from a poor country who has bought into the whole "America is the answer to all your woes" - and she quickly realizes that in order to survive in this "new world" she will have to put herself at risk- again.
This book is a crazy ride - you get to live through all of the ups and downs the main character has to go through, you feel her emotion and at the same time, I felt incredibly sorry for her for buying into a fantasy that is turning out to be more of a nightmare than anything else.
The writing is well done and there are some exciting moments where I was asking myself if Deetee would actually survive. The story was a tad long at times, but otherwise, I really got into the storyline

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - From One Hell To Another
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Deetee's greatest desire began as an unselfish one. All she wanted to do was save her mother from the atrocities of a war-torn Ethiopia, which Deetee herself barely escaped for a high price. After a tearful and tragic separation, she left her mother in Ethiopia for America where she and her aunt plan to raise enough money to smuggle her out one day. As time runs out rapidly for her mother back in Ethiopia, Deetee and her aunt's saving crawls at a snail's pace.
Sylvia, a "professional escort" and a scout, stops by the upscale restaurant where Deetee is a waitress, and inquires about the beautiful Ethiopian's skills. Deetee, grateful for the attention and intrigued by the woman's glamour and beauty, tells Sylvia everything. So, the scouting begins. After losing her job and all hope of saving her mother, she enters into a dangerous world that eagerly awaits her.
Deetee soon finds herself in the glamorous, yet scandalous life of "professional escorting" in Ottawa. She learns that the circle of associates that surround her are into a lot more than just making money by having sex, including using and selling drugs. When Deetee tries to flee the situation, Seville, the pimp and drug addicted control freak, drags her back violently. As Deetee battles for her life against criminals who have proven to be hardcore enough to take her life at the snap of a finger, readers will find themselves cringing at the thought of what the end will be.
In TURNED OUT: From Ethiopia to America, Jacques Hebert and Robert James attempt to paint a painfully vivid picture of a desperate young woman whose main goal in life is survival--for her and her family. Based on a true story, TURNED OUT: From Ethiopia to America holds true to the form of grittiness and eye opening insight into a world of high-class prostitution. Although the story was a bit too detailed in some places and lacked desired details in others, it was still an interesting read.
