The Field Book To Thine Own Self Be True

Jay Niblick in What's Your Genius has woven 7 years of research, personal stories and opportunities for individual reflection in such a way upon finishing the book the reader truly has become far more self aware. And awareness is the first step to change. Now the reader can walk the path to success with a quicker and more defined pace because the fog is gone and understanding now lights the pathway. Jay also made some significant distinctions in the definition of common words such as talent and non-talents versus strengths and weaknesses that ultimately affect overall personal and organizational performance. This book could be aptly renamed "The Authentic Field Book to Thine Own Self Be True." It goes beyond plethora of self-help books in that it is truly helps individuals who want to become better at what they do, but have yet to figure how to do just that. The abbreviated explanation of the 7 Genius Patterns at the end of the book are an added bonus. Jay's book is an easy read and a must for those who are stuck or who wish to move to that next level of success be them managers to sales professionals who want to be The Red Jacket in a sea of gray suits

You might call "What's Your Genius?" a how-to book on authenticity and more. I have always said that "leadership starts with authentic self-expression that adds value through relationships." In this important new book Jay describes how to raise your level of authenticity and increase your self-awareness, and how these together positively affect your performance as well as your personal happiness, fulfillment and, I say, your leadership potential. A Real Eye Opener!

This book truly is a must read if you've struggled to find satisfaction in your work--or even if you like your work but there are aspects that frustrate you. Raised in a "buck up and overcome your flaws" family, it just never occurred to me that there was a much smarter and more effective way. This book opened my eyes to the concept of recognizing your natural strengths and inclinations and mastering them instead of fumbling around trying "fix" all of your limitations. If you're amazing at what you do, people want you on their team and will make accommodations in the "job description" just to keep you. Virtually all the Masters I know that are the leaders in their fields got there by playing to their strengths and doing what they loved. They weren't suffering through a never-ending battle of "trying to make it," they were simply doing what they loved, were passionate about and had an aptitude for. Becoming a Master was simply the natural result of that.

Is that your Best and Final offer?

This is a terrific book on the perplexing and sometimes uncomfortable process of negotiation. Instead of treating the art of the deal as an abstract concept, Steve Reilly details every step of the negotiating process in a comprehensive but lucid manner, from introducing yourself to ending a deal on your own terms. I promise you that you will not have a single "What if?" in the art of negotiation that is not addressed in this book. Steve provides dozens of applicable real-life examples that make the material incredibly easy to connect with and recall for later use, whether it be for a career in sales or everyday transactions (See "The Rocky Story"). As a college student trying to get the most out of my dollar and about to enter the business world, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A very useful, entertaining and practical book that helps answer all the questions I still had about negotiation!

Steve Reilly has done a super job at providing us with a very useful, informative, entertaining and practical guide to negotiating with tough buyers. I work in the IT industry and although we are constantly encouraged to demonstrate the value to customers, even the best value proposition in the world, doesn't prevent hard-ball buyers that just 'wont budge'.

This book provides a great insight into the step by step process a seller should follow in order to come away with a profitable deal. There are real life examples which I think every seller can relate to and it's a very pleasant contrast to many of the theoretical books out there. It is easy to read and difficult to put down!

Strongly recommended for any salesperson looking to improve their negotiation tactics!

Finally, a book on negotiation skills that is targeted specifically to sales professionals that deals with tough negotiators. I have had the privilege of observing Steve in the classroom where many individuals have benefited from what they have learned in his interactive and practical workshops. I am thrilled that he is sharing his methodologies and practical tactics in his newest book, "You're killing me here". This is a great book that I would recommend to sales people and to anyone who negotiate the "stuff of life" on a daily basis.

 Melissa Hamilton is a renowned food stylist and cofounder of Canal House. She previously worked at Saveur, which she joined in 1998, as the test kitchen director, and was its food editor for many years. Hamilton also worked in the kitchens of Martha Stewart Living and Cook's Illustrated, and she was the cofounder and first executive chef of Hamilton's Grill Room in Lambertville, New Jersey. Like a visit from an old friend --- welcome, life-affirming and.. delicious

Canal House Cooking, Volume No. 3 arrived the other day, and we greeted it like a visit from an old friend who shows up just as you're starting to miss her.

Two years ago, when we first encountered Canal House Cooking, Volume No. 1, we had no idea that we were entering a relationship. Oh, we loved the book --- how could you not? For one thing, it was short: just 60 recipes, presented in a well-bound paperback. These recipes offered the unique tastes of the authors' "signature" dishes. Best of all, they were easy to make. Very quickly, this became our summer cookbook, the one culinary guide we took to the beach house we rented that was not in the Hamptons.

Canal House Cooking, Volume No. 2 arrived in November, 2009. It was, true to the Canal House mantra, a seasonal book. This time around, Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer defined winter as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Neither is a favorite holiday in this house --- our families don't gather, they disperse --- but we found many recipes that sustained us through the cold and the bleak.

By then, we were grooved --- we'll be grabbing these publications as long as Hirsheimer and Hamilton put them out. Because, three issues in, you could see this is a collaboration on the order of Lennon/McCartney --- they're completely complementary talents. Hirsheimer's photographs are food porn of the highest order; on the side of her photography career, she was executive editor of Saveur and co-authored four cookbooks. Hamilton co-founded our favorite restaurant in Lambertville, New Jersey, and worked with Martha Stewart and Cook's Illustrated. In 2007, they acquired a red brick studio overlooking a canal in Lambertville, New Jersey --- just across the river from the artist-and-tourist colony of New Hope, Pennsylvania --- and became missionaries for a special brand of cookbook: "home cooking, by home cooks for home cooks."

"Canal House Cooking, Volume No. 3" is a hymn to Spring. We're just starting to cook our way through it, but already it feels like the best edition so far. Hirsheimer's photographs leap off the page; you feel if you squeezed her shot of an orange, you'd get juice. Their range has expanded. They've always been fans of a drink at the end of the workday; now, in additional to cocktail recipes, they've had eight chefs and wine experts suggest wines that are overlooked and affordable.

As ever, they're into Real Food, generously offered. (Chicken Liver Pâté: "Don't hold back on the butter.") The Orange Marmalade looks addictive. The French Onion Soup "tastes like it has been simmered for days." Roasted Root Vegetable Stew just might get me off meat/fish/chicken one night a week. Rise E Bisi --- fresh peas, short rice, parmesan and chicken stock --- is an easier-to-prepare risotto. The lamb shanks recipe better be doubled; it's that simple, that good.

Chicken Poached with Ham and Oxtails will replace the chicken soup that got us through the winter. Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder and Beef Stew are modest twists on classic recipes, and that's the good news --- who wanted them re-invented? How about Butternut Squash and Candied Bacon as a first course? And Roasted Rhubarb as a dessert?

My First Venture to the Canal House

I recently saw the gorgeous new hardcover that Canal House released and started hearing buzz about their seasonal publications. I couldn't leave it alone--I had to order one and see what all the fuss is about. I chose volume 3 which is winter and spring. We're sitting in the dead of winter now so I figured I'd get the most bang for my buck to choose a volume that would take mme through half a year.

Canal House does seasonal cooking all year long. They publish these slim little volumes which are charmingly not quite book length and way too big to be magazines. They are filled with reliable, simple recipes that make you look like a stellar cook. Up close photographs of food abound along with seasonal essays and watercolours done by one of the authors. They are fanciful, fun, and deeply useful.

I do not like the materials the book is made of. The paper almost seems to be thick, dull cardstock with perforations along the top and bottom aspects of the book. This dark paper does nothing to highlight the photographs everyone is always praising. While the authors do photograph the food in such a way that the food takes center stage,the quality of the paper detracts from the finished product. I wouldn't dwell on this aspect except that every review I've seen for these seasonal volumes talks of the great photography talent at work here so I wanted to take (slight) issue with it.

This volume contains recipes on: working up an appetite; teatime; salads; soupe du jour; eat your vegetables; gone fishing; birds of a feather; big pot cooking; meat; the pasta lesson; Easter lunch; and something sweet. All recipes are great for the home kitchen--these ladies are working in a fairly small kitchen themselves--but the skill level utilized varied from basic to moderately involved. The most specialized piece of kitchen equipment at work was a handcrank pasta machine.

The lemon and sea salt focaccia recipe caught my eye immediantly. I couldn't get it off my mind and succumbed to making it within 48 hours. It was surprising and delicious. The tartness and sweetness of the lemon melded beautifully with the seasalt and played off the mellow roundness of my olive oil in a way that I couldn't have expected. My husband ate half the pan in a very short time. I also came to love the conversational tone of their writing in this recipe. When they tell you to salt the focaccia, they tell you "We like ours salty". These girls are after my heart. I've never even made focaccia before today, and it was better than any I've ever eaten.

So I thought my first venture into Canal House was a happy one. I will be buying up more of these little volumes and whipping up little seasonal delights for my family and friends.

good enough cookbook

You know who this book is REALLY for: your ambitious friend, who makes her own mayonnaise, pasta, bread, and pie crust. Marvel that she is, everything she eats is organic and gluten-free -- or whatever the latest healthy fad might be.

But there are a few recipes here for the more lackadaisical cook, although I would certainly not recommend it for a novice. But most cooks will be able to find a half-dozen or so recipes that they can adapt and use. And isn't that good enough?

From the Author
If you decide to read this, read it with a fine tooth comb. There is a lot of information packed in it. While I tried to illustrate ideas with analogies, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Negative critics have picked at little things, such as my emphasis on friendships or what I said women want. They have failed to understand the greater scheme and the context of what they criticized. Nor did they apply what they read in real life. A lot of what I wrote will be familiar, and a lot will sound like something you already do. Great. Now understand the main idea and try it again.

The question to ask yourself is, "What do I really want?" If you are humble enough, you will find that your answer changes as you get older. I hope my book helps your answer change from "I don't know" or something physical.

If you want quick tips, you might find a few. But this book is not about giving you a quick answer to your dating problems. You can read my articles on TheRugged.com for quick tips.

Getting what you really want depends on you and what you decide to take or leave.

How did I come up with this book? In 2003, the man I wanted to marry was in a car accident and died. He was an effective leader who gave his time to people and who truly cared about my well-being. It is because I had this experience of being loved and cherished but hadn't yet found that experience with someone else that this book was written.

The title is tongue-in-cheek. But the archetype is from the dog family, because dogs are socially closer to human beings, arguably, than any other animal group.

Even though it's aimed at men, women can get something from it, too. I hope you enjoy it. (The book is much funnier than this editorial.) And please leave feedback!

Good Book, Misleading Title...

With a title like, "Alpha Dog, Get the Bitch You Want" by Wing Girl Kim, you might expect something geared for pickup artists, players and maybe even pimps. An that's unfortunate because this book is nothing like that. Which means a lot of regular guys are going to miss out on its wisdom due to the title, or player types are going to buy it thinking it's about pickup and seduction and be disappointed. It's a powerful title but ends up being a bait and switch.

In a nutshell, Wing Girl Kim uses the analogy of a wild dog pack to illustrate certain principles of pickup and attraction along with the typical, more traditional dating advice you would expect from a woman giving advice to a guy, such as treating women with sincerity, respect and chivalry, impressing her, not choosing a women based on her looks, avoiding same night lays, one-night stands, etc. Definitely not the kind of instruction you'd get from the pickup and seduction community but she does provide some helpful and unique dating advice and even quotes from Christian authors and the Bible a couple times.

Where the book falls short is the amount of space she devotes to personality types and Jungian psychology which adds nothing to the book except excess bulk. Instead of five plus chapters, a simple one chapter summary or overview could have gotten the point across just fine. It's almost as if she felt compelled to dazzle us with her scholarly research...in fact, she admits as much saying, "Maybe I'm getting too psychobabbly here, but that's what happens when you read all sorts of scholarly literature."

All in all, this is a decent entry level guide for the nice-guy wanting to get his feet wet with women, or the older guy who's found himself single after a long term relationship.

First Half, Insightful. Second Half, Too Repetitive.

It should have been titled "Alpha Dog; Find the Pick of the Litter; Date More Compatible Women." That whole "..Get The Bitch You Want" thing is a provocative title but throws people off into thinking that this book just teaches you to pick up the hottest bitch at the bar - NOT the case here.

So if you understand that this book is a dating book, the FIRST HALF of the book gets 4 stars! It's really insightful and brings up a lot of great points about dating someone you are not just sexually attracted to, but someone that you can see a future with. It uses the metaphor that if you were an actual Alpha Dog, you would want the most compatible female Alpha Dog to help you run your pack. An Alpha female that you can rely on, cooperate with, and communicate with to ensure the safety and survival of you and your pack.

The book suggests that in order to find the woman who is right for you, you have to understand yourself and understand what kind of women do you get along with. Women who are not just beautiful, but women who you have a connection to. It comes down to a few things such as;
1)Does the woman reciprocate feelings and actions?
2)Does communication come easy between the two of you?
3)Is there an attraction?
4)Is the timing right - in which you both mutually want the same things, which is ideally a relationship?
Things you should consider before getting too involved with someone emotionally or sexually.

The second half of the book gets 2 stars - half way into the book I find that the author(s) start repeating alot of the same things over and over again, as if they want to beat the information into you. They are constantly referring back to MBTI personally types and tells you to read another book written by Dr. Alex Avila called "Love Types." At this point I feel like they are paraphrasing Dr. Alex's book to me and it feels like the author loses a lot of original and intriguing things to say.

So first half of book, 4 stars. Second half, 2 stars. Overall 3 stars. That sounds about mathematically right.

This book could ruin your dating life

The author does not reveal her real name, which I dislike. Why is she not open and honest here?

At first, you think that this book is a part of the pick up artist scene. We hear that the author serves as a `wing girl', and she recommends that you read Neil Straus's `The game'. But this is a smokescreen. Actually, the book is about how a well-meaning woman thinks that a nice young man should ideally behave.

She writes (p. 193) that if you follow the advice in the book, you will be a winner. "You won't regret it."
I think that if you follow the advice in the book, you WILL regret it. The book is said to be based on experience, but I doubt it. It seems much more based on the author's idealistic ideas about how the world should be, rather than how the world actually is. We hear that women appreciate such things as initiative, consideration and sincerity. Which, of course, sounds sympathetic. But will the considerate and sincere boy really get the girl? In the author's idealistic universe, yes. In this universe, the boy is a nice guy who loves his mom and reads the bible, and who is not aiming at immediate sex, but only a long term relationship. He honors the gender that carries mankind in its belly for nine months per soul, and he acknowledges that one in every three women has been sexually abused by the age of 18. Therefore, he avoids to frighten the girl by touching her, and he definitely does not go for sex at the first date. Instead he attempts to connect at a deep level and only thinks of a relationship after he has checked that she will be a good partner. And it is suggested to buy flowers for the girl to give her on the first date.
In the author's opinion, it is good to start out being friends and believe that pure friendship can lead to romance - preferably with a woman you know well from your work or your close friends. The boy should be aware that a woman's beauty is only an asset on a short term. The author writes: "Go beyond a woman's first impression, and get to know her from the inside. . . . If you're not connecting well, don't assume there will never be chemistry. It's possible that you haven't found a common interest that will connect you two . . . Even if you and your date don't feel a spark, don't just give up on the relationship. Be friends for the time being . . . " So it is recommended that you go on with the dating, that you persist, even if there is no spark at all.
Such advice is disastrous. It could ruin your dating life.
As an antidote against this, I suggest that you search the concept "ladder theory" on the internet. You will get more useful advice from reading a few pages on the ladder theory than on reading all about Jungian personality types in the book here - a subject which is treated more thoroughly elsewhere anyway.

Some reviewers claim that the book is well researched. I don't agree. Much of what I have cited above is postulated without any kind of evidence to back it up.

I regret that I bought the book.

For people with positive attitude

For those of us who have read or seen "The Secret" and read other inspiring masters, the likes of Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra or Eckhart Tolle, this book is a warm reminder that we can achieve anything.
Michelle has a straightforward approach to manifestation, is an assertive coach/teacher but most of all I feel she is reliable and speaks from her heart and her life's experience. I believe her.
