About the Author
From 1991-2004, Paul Spelman worked as a reporter in Colorado, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. His stories have appeared on more than 40 TV stations around the country, including WPIX-New York, WCVB-Boston, KTLA-Los Angeles, and WGN-Chicago. He also reported for the cable channel Tech TV, worked as a newspaper and radio reporter, and contributed to various other publications. He now lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife Erin, their sons Billy and Jeremy, and their sleepy cats Jacob and Marvin.

Even Better Than I Expected

I found "Even Worse Than We Had Hoped" a very funny and surprising tale that strips bare what most of us might have thought of as a "glamour job": reporting local news on TV. I thought all they had to do was stand up looking good with a microphone and say a couple of intro words to the news footage.
Not so, I learned. The low pay (probably all "glamour jobs" have low pay?), the desperation to come up with something newsworthy every day no matter how few the happenings (even worse than we had hoped!) in your own small city compared with what the big cities have to choose from -- and the wit to see the funny side in spite of it all, was a revelation to me.
Read it only if you don't mind laughing out loud.

Very engaging and humorous

I started this book with not the slightest interest in TV news, but I still found it extremely engaging and a worthwhile read. It is quite funny and insightful, and Spelman has an admirable ability to be objective, even when it reflects poorly on him. Really a very worthwhile and entertaining read.

Spelman has written an autobiographical account of his time spent in local TV news in manner that informs and entertains without being self-absorbed or pedantic. Highly worthwhile read for anyone who is considering a career path in TV journalism.
