About the Author
Sandra Gunn, a former educator in the public school system, received a grant to develop and teach an innovative humanities course for high school students. Upon completion of this program, she left public education and joined the Council of the Great City Schools in Washington, DC where she helped develop curriculum options for the great city schools. This work was designed to build a bridge between the relevance of what a student learns and its practical applications to his life. With the birth of her two sons she established a home school with pioneering concepts devoted to the exploration of their natural curiosities. The curriculum was based upon the concept that every child is an artist who has a need to express himself; that each question may have more than one answer; that success and failure are part of the same process; that mistakes are positive because they encourage us to change direction; and that life and play are the same. Children learn what has purpose in their lives. She lives in Maryland. Read her blog at www.peekabooparenting.com

Healing the Lost Child
By Idaho Sue
Written from the standpoint of an educator, Peek-A-B00 offers the reader an innovative means of stimulating young children in their formative, preschool years. Dissatisfied with the public school system, the author and her husband elected to form a school in their mountain home garage where they hired talented and creative adults to work with their two young sons in a primitive, environmentally rich and isolated area of Tennessee.
The book initially provides a graphic example of the perceived childhood deprivation of a child forced in the early years to take on adult responsibility. Although the author then puts forth a forceful argument for the ability of her own children to parent or educate her, this reader suspects that the natural love and curiosity of her own children simply allowed the author to reformulate her own early childhood experiences such that she was able to overcome anger and a sense of loss for the emotional deprivation she felt as a child. As such, it is valuable reading for any person wishing to soul-search alternative explanations for the emotional voids they carry into the adult world.
The positive message to this book is that, despite our own emotional "baggage," a condition we all bear to some extent, most mature adults are able to reframe their own past experiences. This is especially true when we have the advantage of seeing the world away from the burdens of our own childhoods and through the unrestricted joys and disappointments of our own children. We then have the ability to literally remake our lives and to undue childhood perceptions that have negatively impacted our adult lives. To this extent, the author does us a huge favor by allowing us to change mind sets and to skip into a more mature frame of mind whereby all choices and all events in our lives have the potential to shape us, bend us and/or provide us with personal victories.

A Must Read
By Michelle F. Fox
This book is a window into the life of Sandra Gunn. In it we see glimpses of her life as a child and as an adult. We learn about the relationship b/w her and her parents and how they affected the relationship b/w her and her sons. From every angle, no matter how you look at it, this is a beautiful story.
I recommend Peek-A-Boo, I See You to anyone at any phase in their life. As you move from chapter to chapter exploring the memories of Gunn's life you begin to grow a new appreciation for your own. As a woman who is somewhere b/w childhood and motherhood I found magical ways to relate to these stories. This book left me with a new perspective on life and the relationships I have with my own parents. No matter who you are, this is a book that we can all understand and find magical ways to relate to.
As I moved through the chapters I found myself highlighting especially beautiful lines/words of wisdom. Gunn finishes the introduction with one of my favorite quotes: "Life should be lived in Paradise. Paradise is here. I have often wondered why we thought it was somewhere else."
Sandra, thank you for sharing your life and light with all of us through your beautiful writing. I look forward to reading and re-reading your book as I grow older and start a family of my own someday.

A sensitive and thought provoking must read for parenting
By Ruth A. Day
This book by far was the most interesting and heartwarming memoire of raising children and them indeed raising the parents in the light. Sandra's sensitive observation of her children's strengths and using that to encourage learning was very insightful rather than leaving the learning curriculum to the public school system that in some opinions is "one size fits all". Although being afraid of the unknown emotional impact that parenting may bestow upon her, she found the courage to go forth with faith, dedication, support from her husband, and was rewarded the blessings of two grown sons that today continue to achieve in personal and business life as I have recently witnessed.
This book gave me a new insight that if parents are committed to take time to love them and observe where their interest are, listen to their questions, and teach them based on that at home you may find a more secure child desiring to learn more and more. This will be very helpful for when they enter the school system. Saundra's view of every child is unique as the next and the need to be encouraged in their specific areas of interest seems to have been successful.
I've known the Gunn's for a short time and every time there son's come by for a visit they all just gleam with excitement when seeing each other. There are more smiles that you can't help but smiling back. I can see that this family indeed still has that family unit of loving and caring and hope that Dmitri and Dakus can instill upon their children the same good values and character as their parents so dedicatedly aspired to give them. They have that "unconditional love" no matter what.
This book is a must read for those who are parents, going to be parents, or just anyone who has the love of children and the curiosity of what a child see's in their little life before adulthood looking back up at us adults. I do agree with Sandra, we need to make the next generation better, better educated, respectfull, better humanitarians, instilling the importance of family and to be smart enough to run our great country.
