The Natural Soul, by Barbara Harris Whitfield

The Natural Soul: Unity with the Spiritual Energy that Connects Us – What It looks like and how It feels The central concept of The Natural Soul is the difference between ego, the character we play in our daily drama, and who we really are – our soul or True Self. This book overflows with intimate vignettes that bring these ideas alive. Whitfield tackles head-on our current epidemic of spiritual and societal malaise and our overuse of prescription medication which usually numbs us to our soul. Our ego may struggle to understand but as we read we awaken to what our soul innately knows ― We came here as souls born into a human body and we will leave again as our soul. She uses this new way of seeing our life in other areas including: the love of our life, raising children, grieving naturally instead of numbing out in “depression,” helping others die, facing our own final passage in this life time and soul contact across the veil. The Natural Soul, Whitfield's fifth published book, offers us our souls' natural birth right ―a life of peace and joy. Previous books have garnered her appearances on Oprah, Larry King, Donahue, the U.S. Senate and U.N. in New York.

Revealing the Soul
By Louis M. Savary
Barbara Harris Whitfield is widely known for her research and writings on Near Death Experiences (NDEs). This new work uses her NDE work as a springboard and takes the reader in a brand new direction.

The key clarification this book provides is an understanding of the difference between soul and ego. She points out that each has a different "voice" and different qualities.

According to Whitfield, the soul is who you really are, while your ego is simply a temporary outer expression of your soul. In her understanding, the soul constructs the ego as a kind of "executive assistant" to help us live out our daily human experience. She also describes the ego as the character or role we play during our time on Earth. The ego's job, given to it by the soul, is a very practical one: to carry out our everyday tasks such as shopping for groceries, balancing our checkbook, scheduling appointments, and all those other things that help manage our busy lives.

However, Whitfield notes, many of us, instead of keeping the ego in its proper place as an assistant to our soul, allow the ego to take over and control our life. When that happens, we begin to think that the ego is who we really are, and we forget that we are soul and we fail to nurture our self as soul.

Whitfield first made the discovery of this distinction between soul and ego through her own near death experience and from studying similar NDEs of others. She explains that since the ego is a construct created by the soul to negotiate our way through the physical world, the ego is no longer needed and simply dissolves when the body dies. If we make the mistake of thinking we are our ego, then we make the mistake of believing that we dissolve when we die.

What really provides the most richness in this book is that instead of merely talking about the soul, Whitfield reveals the soul to us and shows us how to nurture it. For example, she suggests simple tests to discern whether you are living from your ego or your soul. She shows how the controlling ego complains when you are not engaged in the physical world--when you are just "being." She points out how the ego lives for linear activities, now doing this and next doing that, while the soul is seeking "a quiet feeling of peaceful being deep within you that is your true self." While the ego lives in chronological time, the soul lives in sacred time, in an eternal now. Only our soul can feel true love or make us whole.

Because of this insight, Whitfield suggests, both science and religion miss the most important point when they try to explain what life is about. Science tries to analyze life, and religion tries to codify it. However, the true understanding of what life is about comes naturally to the soul. It requires neither analysis nor codification.

If you want to learn to live from within your soul, this is your textbook. It could have been titled "Soul-living 101."

A Near Death Experiencer shares lessons learned
By Bibliophile
In The Natural Soul Barbara Whitfield explains how her near death experience totally changed her perspective on life, and she provides anecdotal accounts of what living from the soul looks like. She speaks of how the soul is present during both birth and death and how both transitional experiences can be met with peaceful understanding if we understand what the soul is all about. Although awareness of the soul is available to everyone, the ego often blocks the way. Barbara's unique and fascinating (but often painful) experiences give us knowledge of how the soul can heal us if we allow it to. We have to learn how the ego differs from the soul, and Barbara offers us this wisdom from the lessons she has learned. As an added bonus, Barbara provides evidence that our soul doesn't end when the body dies. The near death experiencers who have shared their stories with the world are brave and generous. I am grateful to Barbara and others who have shared their stories with the world. If we can use this knowledge to become more cognizant of our true selves and the true selves of other people, the world could likely become a happier and saner place.

Incredible book
By Richard
This is an incredible book. Rarely, when you see the word Soul in a title, do you find such honesty, such depth, such clearly started truths. Neither pop psychology, nor new-age BS, nor oft-repeated religious dogma, The Natural Soul gives us heart touching scenes of life nestled into a loving overall perspective. Many people have beautiful and challenging events happen in their lives. That isn't new in itself. It requires a clear-eyed self honesty and a loving world view to make them useful to others. Barbara Whitfield has done this and more. If you are not touched by this book please set it aside, then come back to read it again later. I did, and it has touched me deeply. Thank you.
