Castro as the personification of Soviet Intrusion into Cuba

Marquez-Sterling, Manuel 2009 Cuba 1952-1959: The True Story of Castro's Rise to Power. Kleiopatria Digital Press ISBN-10: 0615318568 ISBN-13: 978-0615318561

This book is a magnificent effort, and a very important one. While I might quibble with the author on some details such about who seemed to be the most senior Soviet agent in charge of Cuban subversion, or the importance of the Battle of Guisa (only mentioned in passing in Time Line section (page 229, 30th of November 1958, Rebels dominate Oriente) where IED (improvised explosive devices) were employed extremely effectively by the Castro forces. However, such quibbles do not detract from this work.

What is abundantly made clear that there was an immense and long standing effort on the part of the Soviets to find, train and deploy Cuban nationals, including Castro, to further their cause. Apparently the Soviets spared no effort to this end; they even burned up their other agents and agents of influence. In this regard perhaps the most telling of all material (and there is a great deal of important information here) is on page 145 when they expend perhaps their most valuable agent of influence Herbert Matthews, merely to carry a message from Castro to author's father.

The book also makes a point of Castro's carefully guided duplicity, at a time when too many books on Castro harp misguidedly on Castro's "mistreatment" by U.S. Officials, he had already put into action his continuing plans (now apparently under the overt direction of Hugo Chavez, but in reality merely a continuation of Soviet plans by former KGB agent and now leader of a reduced Russia). One only has to read the material on page 183 to see that Castro even when he while visiting the U.S. was already deeply involved in subversion of Latin America. Other sources concur, for instance in Meredith Daneman's book "Margot Fonteyn: A Life" it is clear that Castro was supporting a failed invasion of Panama (see also my 2007 Amazon customer review of this volume "The dancer as a spy?'...One of the mysteries of Margot Fonteyn is her association and almost certain minor activities as an agent.'"

The author pointeds out that the Soviet subversion of Cuba started with the arrival and actions of Fabio Grobart, (a disciple of "Iron" Feliks Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Soviet repression apparatus not in text). It is my personal opinion that Grobart was instrumental in destroying the strength of the conservative Independence fighters and unbalancing for ever the political scene in Cuba. An especially pertinent activity was directing the infiltration and ultimate cooption of the powerfully armed Gibara expedition against Dictator Machado in a 1931 way that brings to mind the misdirection of the "Bay of Pigs" invasion.

Fidel Castro's contacts apparently started via G.W. Bashirov (pages xxiv-xxv), and continued support of the clandestine Soviet apparatus. This included somehow using the communist sleeper cells (especially in the Sierra Maestra, where they had been placed long before by Grobart) at the future communist dictator's command (not mentioned directly in text).

Thus in the view of the author (with which I agree) Castro's triumph and long rule were part and parcel of substantial and long term operations by Soviet Intelligence. It is ironic that once in power, Castro's mismanagement forced the Soviets to spend tremendous amounts of money, and that in turn promoted the collapse of that "Evil Empire." However today, one observes a resurgence of that ruthless command, helped in great part by the aid of Western Hemisphere subversive organizations that Castro engendered all over the Americas from his base in Cuba.

My brief assessment of History professor Manuel Marquez-Sterling's book (Cuba 1952-1959: The True Story of Castro's Rise to Power) is that his work has unequaled comprehensive details of politics, diplomacy, and media coverage of Cuba during the 1950's, just before Castro's rise to absolute power in 1959. Among the significant events is Batista's Coup overthrowing fifty years of Cuban democracy in 1952, efforts by the opposition to Batista- by both the violent revolutionaries and the peaceful constitutionalists, the media's erroneous and very favorable portrayal of Castro as a heroic pro-democracy figure (particularly New York Times Herbert Mathews and CBS reporter Robert Taber), the U.S. State Department backing of Castro and the subsequent arms embargo against the Batista dictatorship, events leading to the November 58 elections that Batista fraudulently stole from the author's father, and Castro's takeover in January of 1959 after Batista's chaotic departure. My only negative critique is that the author is a bit too soft on Batista and a bit too harsh on the moderate and liberal revolutionary political leaders that supported the armed struggle against Batista. However, the book is the author's labor of love, for both Cuba and a father that got cheated from been President in November of 1958. As a matter of fact, this book by Marquez-Sterling is recommended in my own book about Memories from the Land of the Intolerant Tyrant (available from Blue Note Books) as one of the best describing political events in Cuba before the 1959 Revolution.

I've just finished this extremely engrossing book and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the sad TRUTH about the tragedy of Fidel Castro's coming to power. The book was written by Manuel Marquez-Sterling, and no one knows, better than he does, the facts concerning this very turbulent time. He explains quite clearly, the madness that took over common sense and allowed this brutal dictator to take over this beautiful, proud country. Anyone who wonders how something like this, was allowed to happen, will have their answers in this marvelous book !

Highly recommended!

Quick and easy reference to keep in clinic and especially for students of TCM. Really helps to sharpen your skills with herb identification and their properties. It's definitely much better than carrying herb samples around. Pictures are really nice and have the correct herbs being identified. You won't be sorry you bought it!

It wasn't what I expected, but I am keeping it anyway. It does give the pictures of the herbs, but I was expecting more of a description. As a Materia Medica I was expecting more.

TCM student should have this book.

This book help me study the herbal medicine. It was categorized in the herbal action. Index are both Pinyin and Latin name which is very easy for you to flip back and forth. The picture are very clear. I recommended this book to few friends and they're love it. One of my friend order two books and she cut the picture and put in her flash card to help her study for the board exam. Even you are not TCM student, this book was great for people who are interested in used of natural herb, a lot of Chinese medicine are the fruit and vegetables you can found in supermarket.

About the Author
Rosalie Hurd, B.S., nutritionist and home economist is a life-long vegetarian and mother of 5 grown children. She is involved with nutrition counseling, cooking schools, health seminars and promoting the principles of abundant health through the simple art of natural whole food preparation.

A winner in a Mrs. America contest, Rosalie was chosen from a group of 50 participants, being the only contestant who prepared a completely vegetarian dinner. See the winning meal in Ten Talents pg. 586. She is a former Home Economics teacher and food service director. In addition to caring for the needs of her busy household, she serves as secretary and office assistant to her husband.

Frank Hurd, D.C., M.D., has spent more than 45 years in the study and practice of alternative health and wellness. He is currently engaged in an active practice, lectures on principles that support vibrant health through a vegetarian lifestyle, and prefers preventive methods and natural remedies.

First book great. Second book Greater!

In 1974, I left home at the age of 16, moved to Vancouver BC, where I went to a local health food store in search of the best value (most recipes for the lowest price) possible in a vegetarian cookbook. I was finally free to be a vegetarian without family pressure! One cookbook won out over all the others, it was the Ten Talents cookbook which I immediately purchased. I lived out of the Ten Talents cookbook for many years preparing awesome vegetarian meals for myself and all my other high school friends who would supply ingredients and I would cook up the meals. We all helped each other to get through high school that way since none of us lived at home with our parents.

Believe it or not, I still have my original copy, covered in food samples! :- I have since purchased the revised edition and it is better than the original in that the recipes have been made even healthier and the improved eye candy (beautiful photos) are just awesome! You will discover more than life giving healthy recipes in this book. I cannot recommend the book highly enough!

My wife, Linda Carney MD, also recommends and sells this cookbook to her patients in the office and through our web site for AllMedPhysicians, pLLC located in Buda, Texas. However, Dr. Carney does recommend that her patients modify the recipes by eliminating the added oils. The damaging effects of vegetable oils to our delicate Endothelial Cells is something that was not understood at the time this book was written. We have suggested, and do hope Rosalie Hurd will create, a low-fat no added oils version in the future. That is on the top of our wishlist!

Plant-Based Diet TEXTBOOK, Plus over 1000 recipes..

I just received this cookbook the other day. I was surprised this book was given a 2 star rating from another reviewer because it didnt include "dairy products and cheese" when this book clearly states it is free of "animal products".
We have been striving to eat whole foods for several years now, and more recently, completely animal-product free. I was thrilled to find this cookbook because I thought I owned every vegan cookbook there ever was, and honestly, never came across this one.
This book is amazing to say the least. It is much more then I expected, almost a "textbook" on eating a plant based diet.
One of the most amazing sections of the book to me was the dairy free/animal free CHEESE recipes. American cheese, Mozzorella, Farmer cheese and several other cheese replacement recipes, all of which are SOY free, YAHOOOO!
I have been eating NON DAIRY for many years now due to a severe intolorance to dairy, and yet, not a day would go by when I didnt miss eating pizza, or some other food that "required" cheese to add that irreplaceable final touch to make it delicious and satisfying. I do not buy the vegetarian processed cheese replacements, because they usually have about a hundred unrecognizable ingredients.
One of my goals is to make the Mozz cheese, and to make veggie pizzas this weekend.
Anyway, to the 2 star reviewer. Take the plunge, you CAN live without dairy in your diet. Little do you realize that the very book you gave a negative rating to, could be the very book to "deliver" you from your hard core dairy product addiction.
This book was NEVER supposed to include dairy products, so to give it a 2 star review for its lack of dairy products would be like giving Chipotles Mexican Grill a negative review for not serving Big Mac's.

Ten Talents Cookbook

I have been a vegetarian for over 30 years and have enjoyed recipes from a 1968 edition. I bought the current edition for my vegan grandaughter and her family, and, now that I have seen its improvements, including an index, I will shortly purchase one myself.

About the Author
Joel Anderson graduated from Ringling School of Art & Design in 1986 and worked for Carden & Cherry Advertising Agencyin Nashville, TN (the creators and producers of the Hey, Vern Ernest T.V. and movie character.) While with C&C, he won a daytime Emmy Award for creating the show graphics for the CBS Saturday morning kid s show, Hey Vern, It s Ernest! In 1993, Joel co-founded Anderson Thomas Design which is now known as Anderson Design Group, a Nashville-based graphic design firm that has done work for companies such as Universal Studios & National Geographic, Golden Books, Hasbro Toys, and others. Joel and his team have won numerous local and national ADDY Awards, and their work has been featured in Print Magazine and How Magazine. Their most recent design hit is the Spirit of Nashville Collection, a series of more than 60 prints created in the style of the Golden Age of Poster Art.

Ever tried to convince your kids they needed to clean their rooms or something awful would happen? I've heard of everything from taking the offending toys and/or clothes and holding them for ransom (tried it myself--it didn't work very well) to tossing the clothes onto the drive way so the kids would have to pick them up on their way in from the bus after school. I'm not sure that one worked for the frustrated mother, either. Well, in Holly Remkes' tale of The Gunny Sack Man, we learn about two little girls who are always making messes. When their mother gets totally frustrated about their inability to keep their room clean for five minutes, she tells them about a man who comes to kids houses to check and see if their rooms are clean. If it's a mess, he'll sneak in while they're gone and eat all of the toys and clothes on the floor. If their room is clean, he'll leave them each a treat or other present under their pillows. When asked about her first book, Holly states her mother told her the story of The Gunny Sack Man when she was a little girl, and she has used it with her own children, finding it a great way to motivate them to take care of their own messes. The rhyming text perks the ear and cute storyline are bound to interest all of your little ones to take care of their things in record time. About the Author
Holly Remkes lives near Fillmore, Utah with her husband, David, and their seven children. In addition to writing children's books, she paints and illustrates. Being a mother, though, she has to be creative and will sometimes have an unfinished painting hanging on the wall where she can only get one brush stroke in before running off to help one of her kids. Holly loves being a mom and hopes to help other families have fun while learning the lessons of life.

Absolutely a wonderful idea and the book is a keeper!!

If your child believes in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy, but doesn't like to clean their room and pickup after themselves, this book is for you! The Gunny Sack Man comes at unexpected times to see if a child's room is clean. If it is not clean, when he picks up the room he eats some of the things left out as he needs energy to complete the cleaning job, and then fills his bag and sneaks out. If he shows up and the room is clean, he leaves a treat for the child. The child cannot see the Gunny Sack Man because he sneaks in and sneaks out. The book is written in catchy rhyme.

The book was formatted fine for the Kindle. Some pages had the writing above or below the picture; other pages had the writing over the picture and it was still easy to read. I am glad this book is also in print, as I will likely be purchasing copies for friends and family who are new parents/have young children. Absolutely a wonderful idea and the book is a keeper!

I like this book. My little guy is only 18 months so it's a little old for him - but I think it will be a good life learning book for him when he is a little older.

Clean Your Room! If You Don't The Gunny Sack Man Will Come and Eat Your Toys Think About That Little Girls and Boys!

This is a roughly written picture book with pretty average illustrations. The text rhymes but does seem forced at times. Sometimes it doesn't make sense such as "Would you like him to come over and cat? No idea what that means. A good idea for both a picture book plot and way to scare kids into cleaning their rooms though.

Basically the Gunny Sack Man is an old man who visits children's rooms and if their room is messy he eats their toys which fuel his cleaning. If however children have cleaned their room and he doesn't have to clean he will leave a toy or piece of candy under their pillows. Great idea for a character but not as well written story as it could have been.

Too many errors.

I love science fiction and I would read the sequel but there were just too many spelling errors and paragraphs were rarely used. Was this book reread for mistakes or is it my Kindle?

I liked it

I thought the book was pretty well done story wise. I wish it was edited better as there were many spelling errors, and the formatting - oh my! It made it hard to read on the Kindle sometimes. I glossed over those issues but at times it interrupted my reading flow. Some of the "tech" you had to overlook also. Downloading from CDs? But once you get into the story it was hard to put down actually. The ending was interesting and I'm still trying to decide if I completely liked how it ended. The author left things open, I'm assuming, for a sequel. Please just send more time on formatting and editing next time!

The Cathers and the Tarot of Marseilles

"The Secret of the Tarot" (and the Tarot holds many secrets!)is an interesting take on the Marseilles Tarot, and whether the story of the Cathers (a heretical religious group from the 13th century)is concealed within it. Divided into two parts, the first part concerns itself with the history of the Cathars, the Roman Catholic Church, the Albigensian Crusade and the development of the Tarot. The second part concerns the Major Arcana of the Marseilles Tarot (specifically, the Nicholas Conver Tarot), and attempts to show where the imagery in the cards can be connected to specific individuals or families within the Cathar tradition.

The book is well written, and well documented. As with all books of this nature, it reflects the beliefs of the author as to the subject matter. Readers may agree with some of his findings, and disagree with others. They will be exposed to a specific line of thought, one that is well foot-noted, and with a significant bibliography for further study.

For anyone interested in the Cathar tradition, the Marseilles tradition,or the specific Nicholas Conver Marseilles deck, this book is a worthwhile read.

Fascinating Historical Speculation

Whether you're interested in the Tarot in general or in the history of the waning days of the crusades, this book is a must read! Thoroughly researched and documented, but clear and easy reading in its style, this is about as thorough an account as you'll find in such a condensed form.
This book is divided into two sections, 1) The history of the Albigensian Crusades and the persecution of the Cathars in the south of France conducted by the Catholic church from 1198 for approximately 50 years; 2) A card-by-card analysis of the Tarol of Marseilles revealing the hidden and symbolic messages of the history and philosophy of the Cathars.
In straight forward and non-pedantic prose, the author unveils the shocking atrocities of the Church in persecuting the Cathars (and other sects they identified as "heretics") primarily because their appeal to the masses began to erode the church's power (or perceived power). In their simple, non-material, spiritual pursuits, it seems the Cathars were more spiritual than the representatives of the Church, from the Pope on down to the local clergy. People admired them and were attracted to their idea of living simple lives and relating directly to God with no need for an intermediary (such as the Church).
When the Cathars were either killed or driven away, the author speculates that it was natural that those who survived clandestinely would find a way to remember their history, the atrocities committed against them, and the Cathar philosophy. The author argues persuasively that the Tarot of Marseilles, altered in subtle ways from earlier tarot decks, may have been used to perpetuate Cathar purposes under the very nose of the Church.
The research and detail in this book is impressive. I have to say that the preponderance of evidence Mr. Swiryn presents leaves little doubt that the Tarot of Marseilles offers more than parlor-game amusement!
I highly recommend this book.

A fresh and novel look at ancient and current man's development

Boeckl has created a new twist on man's evolution looking at the three major "Domestication Cyles" of our past. His knowlege of history is encylopedic and intuitive and the reader sees insightful interpretations of otherwise standardized ways of viewing man's crawl from caves to computer chips. His synopsis and fresh view of the biblical eras are worth the read alone.

Although the book doesn't explicitly predict the future, one can only assume that that is the next publication from this new author. If not a prediction, at least a suggestion. The writing style is fast paced and is designed for those wanting a quick (150 page), efficient and "no holds barred" presentation of the author's views.

This presentation, coupled with current transcendental thinking by the likes of Wilber, Beck and Roshi sets the stage for man's next domestication cycle/development. A worthy addition to the thinking man's library.
