Understanding Life thru a Warrior's Eyes

This short book is an intimate Spiritual portrait of one of America's great military leaders. In the simple text that makes up this story you will be allowed a window into a man's soul and have the privilege of making some decisions about your life and beliefs. This book is not a 'how to' or even a 'you should' but more a man's personal account of wrestling with the cruelties of life and finding that answer to that quesiton, "why"? It was uplifting and honest. No pretense and no pride. Good words to live by no matter your conclusions on the source.

A+ man, C+ book

Aug 2012 update - reread the booklet again. My previous review comments about booklet, man vs. journey, and authorship remain unchanged. I do believe the book has significance because the subject itself will make the reader think - if he/she has served in the military. Gen. Moore was my commanding general during the early part of my service, so that helped make the "read between the lines" a bit more clear to me. If you have not been in the military, or do not know Hal Moore, probably this book(let) won't do much for you. If you have not served, and want this book, I suggest "We Were Soldiers ..." as a prerequisite (at least watch the movie and recognize that it can not tell the whole story) to put the journey in perspective. If you have served and/or know Moore, this will be a good read if you are on the journey that follows military service.

Original review (c. 2008) follows: Gen. Moore is a true leader, and a genuinely spiritual man. The book's (it is actually quite short, almost a "booklet" rather than a book) description is clear - it was written about Gen. Moore, not by Gen. Moore. Even so, I would have liked more insight into the General's spiritual thoughts. At first reading the "hero worship" got a bit thick and heavy, in fact it got in the way of the true meaning and significance of Gen. Moore's spiritual journey as told by the narrator/observer. However, after finishing the "book" and letting the ideas sit and filter, the meaning and significance of his spiritual journey, and in the process my journey, did begin to become more clear. My experience was that the first reading was disappointing, the second reading was better, and the provoked thought process was rewarding. Do not expect deep insight and there are few if any revelations from the General. However, if you are willing to take a prompt and give thought on your own, this may be a good place to start.

A Journey Observed

Written by Toby Warren, General's Moore, friend, confidant and driver, the manuscript of this book was never intended for publication. It was originally written only for General Moore's adult children, to give them a view and perspective of their father's deep spiritualty as seen and experienced by one of his closest friends.

When they read it, and as others read it, it eventually found its way to a small publishing house and eventually to the domain where it has received tremendous acclaim and admiration, especially by the military and in particular by military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This book is not intended to be a biography or a history. It is what it was intended to be. A snapshot look at a great man's spirtual journey and its impact and influence on him at this point late in his life.

Is it a book written by a an adoring friend? Yes. But that doesn't change the truth one bit. Not about the man and not about the truths it contains.

Few of us will command men in combat, especially combat as deadly as that described in General Moore's book, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young," but we can learn from great men. We ought to learn and need to learn from great men.

This book might best be described as "the rest of the story" in terms of General Moore. And it whets the appetite for this forthcoming book, "We are Soliders Still," due out in August, 2008.

All three, taken together, give us an intimate portrait of an American military hero and his deep abiding faith.

A critic could rip this little book apart from a literary and critical standpoint, but to do so would be to miss the whole point for which it was written. And for which is has been published.

A Real Gem!

The Brightest Moon of the Century is one of my favorite kinds of stories, it explores a large portion of one person's life, you get to see how they grow and change and the experiences that make them who they are. It's put together basically as 9 short stories from Edward's life. His teenage years to mid-adulthood. We're there for it all!

I loved all the stories, from Edward's time at a private high school to his college girlfriend to his time owning a trailer park mini-mart to his time as a film student. It was all interesting and strongly written. I couldn't pick a favorite section, it all built on itself to create a great character study! The things that he did and happened to him seemed so unique to his life, it read basically as a biography.

Another thing I really liked was that several times, characters from one part of Edward's life made a reappearance later on in the story, tying the story that much closer together. Another unique touch to an already unique story is a collection of photography that helps set the scenery for specific parts of the story. I loved that!

This book is a real gem, it's engaging and original! I loved it!

This book was painful at times -- Edward can be so horribly insensitive and so unaware. But it was a great read and moves quickly thru various stages in his life. This was a very enjoyable book.

A Novel-In-Stories with Great Character

"The Brightest Moon of the Century" by Christopher Meeks is a sweet bildungsroman that spans a several decades. The major events in the life of Edward Meopian (Myopian?) are chronicled, from his mother's untimely death at 14 to his moment of clarity in his 40's. His life ambles around, from Minnesota to LA, down Alabama, and back to LA.

In many literary, character-driven first novels, there is a justifiable criticism that "nothing happens." While this is a novel-in-stories, and thus each episode is quite self-contained, each story has some heart-stopping moments. In my opinion, Meeks became more sure of himself as he wrote the later stories because each one seems to increase in drama and action. Some lovely turns of phrase make this novel-in-stories a delightful journey.

The Southern trailer park episode has some shirt-clutching moments, especially when the thieving woman attempts to exact her revenge. The character of Sagebrush (Edward's friend from college) is damaged and, ultimately, redeemed in this episode. I wish Sagebrush had been around more, at least by phone or letters, to buffer Edward's journey. A friend who has your back is always a good addition to a story. It is in the South that Edward comes into his own, too, and his character forms deeply.

By the end, Edward seems like an old friend who you've found after a long absence, and he catches you up on his life. You're invested. He's a likeable character who I'll think about for a long time.

Introduction:
Growing up a child of conflict and divorce, I would never in a million years have imagined myself working with families of divorce. As I began to put this book together, I felt some mixed emotions: sadness as I recalled the pain and conflict I experienced as a child, yet excitement for the hope and help I planned to share through the book. As I was writing my business plan for the coming year, I asked myself, "Is this type of work truly my passion? I am 36 years old, single and have never been married. So why in the world would I want to focus my energy on writing this book?" The truth is that I want to assist you in shielding your children from pain, hurt, and heartache. I know I cannot save the world, but I do know I am here for a purpose, which is to assist in creating healthier families so we can have healthier and happier children. So obviously I made the decision to write this book and I am clear in my heart that I was meant to write it. It has been a complete honor to share my knowledge and to assist families.
When I reach my divorce-education class and see the light go on for parents when they realize how their behavior is impacting their children, my heart is happy. If I help just one child have less anxiety, have better social relationships, be a better partner and parent or just enjoy their childhood more, I can be satisfied that I have done my work. My mind used to want to go to the big picture of impacting, now I just focus on the present, one child at a time. I have a huge heart for children and I know I have been given this vision around children, families and divorce. I make a difference in children's lives, one child at a time.
I am writing this book for you, parents who are divorced, going through a divorce, or considering a divorce. You may also be a co-parent who has never been married to your child's other parent, you too will find this book helpful. It is time for me to share the knowledge that I have gained from my own parents' divorce and conflict, from the parents I have trained, from the children I have counseled, and from the divorces of friends and family. My wish for you and your family is healing, health, and love. My deepest hope is that this book will bring you and your family one step closer to these goals. If what I am sharing assists you in any way to positively impact your family, I know I have done my work here and I am deeply satisfied.
I want to take this time to honor you for picking up this book. In picking up and reading this book, you also want to positively contribute during your time here. You are interested in creating a better society through your own actions. I know this time can feel so painful and that you are making a step to move beyond your pain for the greater good of your children. You want what is best for your children and you are willing to at least explore taking positive action. I thank you for that because you don't have to read this book. You are special. I promise you, if you take action on even some of the suggestions in this book, you will raise children who will be emotionally and physically healthier than they otherwise would have been. They will have an easier life due to your decision to take action in your own life. This is truly the greatest gift you can give to your children. Your children will thank you. Truly, your children do not want material gifts, they want healthy parents and families who love them. I would return every gift my parents ever gave me in return for less conflict and more love in our family.
This book is written from in-depth knowledge and experience with the subject matter. It is also written from my heart. I have no other motive in writing about this topic except the best interests of my readers. May you receive everything you are meant to receive from this book to allow you and your family to heal and move forward in the best way possible for your children. About the Author
Shannon Rios is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in children and families of divorce and conflict. She has taught the state mandated course "Coparenting and Divorce" to hundreds of parents in MN and CO. A child of divorce herself, Shannon shares many of her own stories and insights she experienced growing up in a family of conflict. Shannon's passion is empowering children and families to live the best lives possible.

this book is incredible

I am an attorney in Colorado. After I read "7 Fatal Mistakes" I bought 50 copies. I am about to buy 50 more. I give them to my clients, to opposing counsel, and to my clients' soon to be ex spouses. The book is phenomenal. Without exception, my clients who have read the book have said it changed the way they were parenting. It is truly modified some of my clients' approach to their children and their exes. For some it has lead to genuine soul searching. This book is good for kids, good for parents, and good for me. It gives me a powerful tool to help parents realize the damage they can inflict on their children through and after a divorce.

Separated Parents Are Still Kin

As Director of Stepfamily Associates I've worked with separated parents for 30 years. The most crucial things for kids is for their parents to DECIDE to learn to work together and this book helps. I've been interviewing parents who've been separated for 10 and up to 40 years and they have wonderful stories of how they have learned to work together and now feel like kin as their grandchildren are born. This book helps parents realize that no matter how they feel at the start of the separation, they will have a relationship of some kind for the rest of their lives. Kids need parents who are speaking respectfully to one another - whether they are together or apart. This book will help parents learn how to get on the same page.

Never in my life could I have ever anticipated that an author would possess the passion and love of the great Southwest as Joe McNeil to have dedicated the countless hours of research uncovering the fascinating truths of the lives of both men, women, and corporations who were instrumental in providing movie entertainment filmed in the beautiful red rocks of Sedona, If you appreciate history and if you relish movies, this book is filled to the brim with golden nuggets never exposed before. Original and fresh, Sedona Gone Hollywood is a "who dunnit, where they dunnit and why they dunnit" treasure.

Perfect!

We purchased this as a gift for a friend's birthday. It was delivered as promised, in excellant condition. Our friend was VERY pleased with the book. She used to work in Hollywood with several "personalities" and has always loved movies. Since she now lives in Sedona, it was perfect! Lots of pictures of local scenes, and orders to netflix for some "oldie treasures". All in all, wonderful!

This amazing book is a labor of love, written with a personal style that keeps you riveted from page to page. The photos alone of breathtaking scenery, familiar film stars and behind the scenes action are well worth the $44.00! All of the movies that we love to watch from Stagecoach to Johnny Guitar, to the Rounders, the Outlaw's Daughter, Pony Soldier, Angel and the Badman, Half-Breed, etc. along with dozens of forgotten films revealed for the first time in this book are meticulously revisited with fascinating details and behind the scene insights. Mary Schaeffer Conroy is Emeritus Professor, Russian History, at the University of Colorado in Denver. She has published books, articles and chapters on P. A. I've read The Cosmetics Baron You've Never Heard Of by Professor Mary Schaeffer Conroy and am strongly impressed by the amount of research she has put into this book. Her narrative is based on both written documentation and interviews with relevant survivors. The writing is clear and meticulous. The story of E. Virgil Neal is an interesting historical case study. Neal was both a highly intelligent and successful businessman and something of a con artist. His story as Professor Conroy tells it elicits speculation on human gullibility, and more important on the ways in which a market economy can play on and profit from this. Professor Conroy tells the story both sympathetically and with a good deal of irony, all the while losing none of the intriguing and juicier qualities of the subject. This is a book sure to interest those who relish the more eccentric sides of business history.

I was very impressed by the details in this book. Well researched. E. Virgil Neal was nothing short of a flim flam man, and was an expert at quackery. Lots of intrigue. The book would be a good basis for a PBS documentary (American Experience?) or even a full blown movie or TV mini series.

You are an evil comedic genius, Mr. Russell

This is a very entertaining read. It's equal parts disgusting and hilarious. There are a ton of antisocial, desperate freaks out there and Henry Russell does a fine job chronicling their horrifying perversions. Read this book. You'll either laugh uncontrollably, or you'll crawl up into the fetal position and wish you could erase the mental images that these stories will inevitably conjure up. Good stuff...either way.

This book is SO awesomely wrong!! I can't even believe how messed up some of these people are. The things these (mainly) guys will do for sex blew my mind! I got an early copy of the book through the publisher at hahapublishingdotcom and I died laughing at nearly all of the chapters. Just to name a few..."Broke Masturbation Hand", "STR8 4 STR8", "Furry Sex" and "Guitar Hero Groupie". I love it when the author messes with the people responding to the ads mainly by making fun of them. So good!! Read it! Get it for anyone who you know has ever responded to a casual encounter ad, they may be in the book. Ladies, check your man, there are a lot of married men reponding to these ads.

Some of Laura Sullivan's best pieces!

Laura Sullivan's "Piano Sheet Music Collection" is a compilation of fifteen pieces from four of her CDs, transcribed by the artist herself. Most of the pieces are intermediate to an upper intermediate level, and all are fun to play. Many have running eighth notes in the left hand, which makes the timing easier, and most are in easier key signatures. Only one of the pieces is from Laura's "Piano Solos" album, which is a little surprising, and "Hope For The Sun" also appears on "Pianoscapes" as "Hope For the Trees." Including that one, there are five pieces from "Pianoscapes For the Trails of North America," six from "Mystical America," and four from "Feast of Joy and Love." There are some notation problems and mistakes - especially in some of the earlier pieces - but nothing that would prevent the player from being able to master them. I've been enjoying playing all fifteen of the pieces, but a couple of favorites as "Pachelbel for the Potomac" (a variation on Canon in D), "Pictograph Cave," "Sedona," and "Morning In the Meadow." This is a really nice collection, and it's available in book form or download. Recommended!

Laura Sullivan’s “Piano Sheet Music Collection” is a compilation of 15 of her favorite piano solos. I am an intermediate/advanced intermediate player and her music is a “perfect fit” for my skill level, challenging but very playable. Her music has a “new age” feel to it, and its meditative sound is very relaxing. This is a really nice collection of songs and it is fun to play. I highly recommend this book (perfect for the upcoming holidays!)

Gorgeous music!

After playing through Laura's piano collection I knew I found a gem. Her pieces speak with flowing melody and interesting articulation. I enjoyed playing her music as much as I love listening to it. Highly recommend this collection of piano solos! Would make a beautiful gift! M~ from sewickley, pennsylvania

Great Advice Throughout

I'm a business consultant and not a reverse mortgage professional, so when a friend gave me a copy of this book I was a bit skeptical about its relevance to my work. Was I wrong! Monte Rose's advice, while geared to the reverse mortgage industry is applicable to anyone who sells anything. I sell solutions to my clients and found numerous practical applications in his book. Aside from selling advice, Monte offers tips on a number of other topics, including networking. You'll love the story about a call he once received on a golf course in Palm Springs - talk about networking magic!

Already read it twice

Monte has assembled a complete how to guide for understanding the key points that we as sales people must grasp if we are to be successful in this arena. Working with seniors is a privilege and this book is a wonderful tool for the reverse mortgage professional. As he so simply states, we then, "transform hope to help".
