This treatment manual is designed to help children become active partners in managing their ADHD. The Simon Says program gives children strategies and tools for strengthening their performance in four areas:
-Working Memory
-Impulse Control
-Goal Orientation
-Ability to Shift Focus

It contains dozens of reproducible games, stories, worksheets, tools, home assignments and skill trackers.

The Simon Says program provides a detailed plan for therapists to use in working with children who show symptoms of ADHD. Following a 4-step plan, the therapist first uses a playful intervention to engage the child's interest and to allow the child to demonstrate specific abilities and skills. Next, using stories, worksheets and home assignments, the therapist provides insight and practical tools that will enable the child to utilize those skills in daily life and take more responsibility for managing the ADHD-related difficulties. Special emphasis is placed on strategies that provide external support at the "point of performance"--the actual daily situations that are challenging for the child. For example, the book has reproducible templates for three different types of "wrist lists." each provides the child with a playful way to use the humble but effective checklist as external support for working memory. And, because it is attached to the child's wrist, the list is always available at the point of performance.

This manual is an extremely valuable resource for any therapist who works with children diagnosed with ADHD. Often these children compare their success with that of peers and become confused or doubtful about their own abilities. The Simon Says program provides children with

Daniel Yeager is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. He is a nationally acclaimed speaker, knows for his engaging teaching style, practical strategies, and his concern and respect for children.

Marcie Yeager is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. She is the creative director of Golden Path Games, a company that develops therapeutic games and resources.

The Yeagers developed the Simon Says program over many years of working with children and families at their clinic, The Yeager Center for Children and Families, and also through consultation with other therapists through their training organization, PlayTherapyWorks.

Wonderful ADHD Resource

If you are a children's therapist treating children with ADHD, this manual is a wonderfully practical resource, very well organized and full of specific interventions creating a systematic approach to working with these kids and their parents who are engaged as coaches. There are pages of handouts, games, and reward certificates for copying, too.
The Yeagers have developed interventions based upon the models of Russell Barkley and Thomas Brown, two major figures in ADHD research. These theories and models are presented in the opening chapter in simple, clear terms which can help therapists answer questions parents are likely to have when their child is diagnosed with this condition. The Yeagers explain the need for providing the child with ADHD with external supports for executive function until they develop the internal ability to manage themselves.
The manual devotes a chapter to each of four major problem areas in executive function seen in children with ADHD, specifically, working memory, behavioral inhibition, shifting focus, and goal orientation. Each of these chapters is divided into four parts which provide the therapist with specific, step-by-step interventions. For example, when addressing working memory, the Yeagers give instructions for a game they created in which the child practices "working memory" in a fun way with the therapist. The section then includes a story telling activity to be presented in session (which can include the parents) and which links the working memory game to situations in real life. The chapter then provides specific assignments to aid in the external support of working memory in real life, such as making cue cards or wrist band reminder lists. Parents are recruited to coach the children as they carry out these assignments between sessions. Finally, each chapter provides a list of ways to acknowledge and reward the child for his or her efforts.
The Yeagers have clearly distilled their years of practice experience into a manual rich in specific, scientifically based interventions which will ease the job of therapists and improve the progress of their young clients with ADHD.

"Simon Says Pay Attention" provides a 4-step plan that therapists will find effective and practical as a form of intervention and engagement in their work with an ADHD child. This thoroughly 'user friendly' instruction manual will also prove exceptionally useful for parents and teachers of ADHD children in their own efforts to provide those children in understanding what ADHD, as well as the strategies and tools to enhance their daily lives. Very highly recommended for anyone working with ADHD children!
