Perfect Social Story

This is an absolutely wonderful social story that was organized and written exactly the way I wanted. I needed a story to use with an autistic child who needed a simple visual aid to break a habit that was annoying and embarrassing for his parents. The illustrations are engaging and the text is at the level for toddlers, and special needs children, who have limited vocabulary and ability to understand complex sentence structures. This cute book saved me the time of developing my own story. I highly recommend this book and give lots of kudos to Amy Wallace!!

....it is true - every child will pick their nose!! This author deals with this yucky habit head-on and honestly, giving your tot options that are more productive and less yucky! Great book to address a lesson that we sometimes overlook and ignore. My son loves it!! Drawings are colorful and engaging. A must have for all toddlers!!

Amazing book, I can't wait for the next episode. I've only read couple early chapters, and I have to say it is good. There are suspense and twisted story, I don't want to ruin it, you must read to find out. The turns of the plots make the book more interesting and I am excited for part 2

I love this book so much. I bought part 2 before I even finished part 1. It was that good. The characters are so addictive. It's crazy that you know that the main characters are doing wrong by selling drugs and killing and what not, but yet you want them to come out on top so bad. You get an excitement when you see them get revenge! So sad how the story ended, but this book was such a great read. You'll be rushing to get part 2 when you see how this ends... good job Silk!

This story was full of action and drama. I enjoyed it. I wish we could have seen more into Ali and Nancy's love story but overall it was a good read. Big Mel really disappointed me but it made for a great story. The ending was off the chain!

Are you a “start-up” author? Genie Dailey’s book Mind Your P’s and Q’s (and Your A, B, C’s) is the must read writer’s self-help book prior to sending any creation off to an editor or agent. The easy format of pointers in alphabetical order provides quick access to an editor’s standards from the Active Voice (under A) to Quality (you got it, under Q.) Wonder what drives an editor crazy? Dailey, a professional editor for 40+ years, tells us that lack of consistency in our writing is just one way to turn off an editor. Under Consistency, she lists consistent capitalization, punctuation, time sequence and details such as paragraph indents, among others, as means of self-editing. This is where I learned that editors use “style sheets.” Of course, I flipped to S to learn more about this handy tool used daily by editors.

It is also a great confidence builder that writers (even experienced ones) sometimes need. You get guidance on those punctuation and wording issues that always come up - no matter what your experience level. You get so many tips on making your writing exciting and clear to the reader. You get pointers on editing, manuscript preparation and getting your book published. It's a great resource and a great read!

About the Author
Gil is the primary teacher for the Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City, California; he has been teaching since 1990. He has practiced Zen and Vipassana in the U.S. and Asia since 1975. He was a Theravada monk in Burma in 1985, and in 1989 began training with Jack Kornfield to be a Vipassana teacher. He was ordained as a Soto Zen priest at the San Francisco Zen Center in 1982, and in 1995 received Dharma Transmission from Mel Weitsman, the abbot of the Berkeley Zen Center. Gil has an undergraduate degree in agriculture from U.C. Davis where he was active in promoting the field of sustainable farming. In 1998 he received a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University. Gil teaches at Spirit Rock Meditation Center where he is part of its Teachers Collective. For my money, Gil Fronsdal is the neatest Buddhist teacher in the contemporary English-speaking world. His Dharma talks (see zencast.org or dharmaseed.org) are so straightforward and jargon-free that it's easy to mistake them for Hallmark greeting card material. But this clarity is actually the result of exquisite craftsmanship. Gil explains in this book that he's spent some time teaching children, and he's learned how to reduce complex matters to what newspaper journalists call the "nut 'graph" - the shortest and most elegant statement of fact possible within the limits of language. This book follows that model: brief and to the point. Where history or foreign words are necessary to demonstrate a point, Gil draws on his (massive) scholarly knowledge in the Buddhist Canon. But mindfulness is not about what happened in a foreign land 2,500 years ago - it's right here, right now, and that's where he keeps us for the majority of the book. It's as powerful, practical, and fun as the practice of mindfulness itself.

If you're looking for a introductory primer on mindfulness technique, there are better resources. (I'm enjoying Pema Chodron's How to Meditate with Pema Chodron: A Practical Guide to Making Friends with Your Mind.) If at all possible, you should try to get a live human being to teach you, since mindfulness is essentially a participatory, experiential, trans-rational activity. But if you are a working practitioner at any level, this book will go a long way to supplement and contextualize your practice.

You don't need to buy this book.

You don't need to buy it because, as it says on the back cover of my copy of the 2nd edition, which I bought from a "fulfillment through Amazon" seller, "This book is published and distributed as a gift in the spirit of the Buddhist tradition of dana." ("Dana" is Pali for something like "the practice of giving.") And at the top of page 147 of the book it says, "This book is distributed freely to all who request it."

It is not my goal to deprive Amazon or any other sellers who sell this book of income. I just think that potential buyers of this book should know that this book was published with the intention that it be given away freely, though of course the publisher and author accept donations, and that it is now available online free in Adobe PDF format. Just search on the title and author's name and you should find it, as well as a ton of "dharma talks" by the author that are online free for the listening.

Now I will comment on the content of the book. I've practiced meditation on and off again since the late sixties when I was in high school. (I should mention that there are different kinds of meditation and that the word "meditation" is as generic as the words "cooking" and "exercise.") I was an instructor for mindfulness-based stress and pain management courses at a hospital through the nineties. I am not a Buddhist, however, or any kind of "ist" or follower of any particular "ism." And the nature of mindfulness meditation is such that anyone can practice it be they a practicing Christian, Muslim, or Jew or an atheist, etc. It's not a belief system, and Gil Fronsdal is among those American born mindfulness teachers, such as Jack Kornfield, Jon Kabat-Zinn, and Pema Chodron (who is not a mindfulness teacher per se but who does teach mindfulness meditation), who makes this practice accessible to all.

Fronsdal's prose is simple and clear, and his explanations of basic aspects of Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and mindfulness or insight meditation practice are user friendly and easy to follow. And, his presentation is refreshingly free of what I consider metaphysical baggage. (I sometimes think of it this way: Two people who practice mindfulness can disagree on questions about the JFK assassination, and they can disagree on questions about the ontology of consciousness, whether reincarnation occurs, and much more.)

By the way, the reason I bought a copy of this book even though I knew about the free PDF version of it online, is because I wanted a print copy and it was cheaper to buy one than it would've been to print and bind one. I don't know if they still give out free hard copies of the book. If they did and I knew about it before buying a copy, I would've requested a free hard copy from the publisher and I would've given them a small donation to express my gratitude.

A very good book, in my opinion, but now that you know that the whole book is free in PDF format, you can check it out and form your own opinion.

Gil is the man!

Gil was my first teacher of insight meditation. In the year 2000, I took his introductory course. I am a scientist and his explanations did not offend me. Gil is highly intelligent and articulate and also very warm-hearted. When this book was published, I obtained a copy and kept it at my bedside for a year. It fed me daily. Now I refer to it only occasionally, because I have internalized much of its message. But I keep a stack of these books on my desk at work, to give to people who are curious about meditation and Buddhist thought. This book is a gem.

About the Author
Paul Mathews is president of Mathews Malnar and Bailey, Inc., a provider of quality engineering and applied statistical consulting and training services for R&D, product, process, and manufacturing engineering organizations. Paul has almost 30 years of experience as an engineer, scientist, professor, and consultant. He received a B.S. degree in physics from Miami University (1981) and an M.S. degree in physics from Case Western Reserve University (1986). Paul also holds ten patents and is the author of Design of Experiments with MINITAB (2005, ASQ Quality Press). Paul is a member of the American Statistical Association and a senior member of the American Society for Quality. In his free time, Paul and his wife Kathy race and cruise their sailboat Whitehawk on Lake Erie.

One of my favorite aircraft

As a DC-3 enthusiast and occasional pilot--once even copiloting with the late, great Ernest K. Gann, the finest aviation writer ever to two-block a fistful of throttles--I thought I'd seen every Doug Racer snap ever shot. Yet there are maybe two photos among the 250-odd in this wonderful book that I've ever seen before, and some of them are priceless. (My personal favorite is the conga line of eight American Airlines DC-3 crewmembers and dressed-to-the-nines lady passengers, the captain and copilot obviously wondering why they'd ever agreed to pose for this classic publicity shot.)
That Bruce McAllister has a photographer's eye--not surprising, since that was his day job--is obvious in the selection and layout of the photos in this book, and that he's a highly experienced aviator, bush pilot and airplane owner is made clear in the text and captions that he's written. His book covers not just DC-3 airliners but every military version from the earliest C-47/Dakotas to the Vietnam AC-47 gunships, from the Soviet Li-1 copy to the most recent Basler BT-67 turboprop conversions.
This is a high-quality coffeetable hardcover that should be enjoyed not only by pilots and aviation buffs but by anybody who appreciates industrial design in its finest form.

The Perfect Gift for Any Aviator...

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking: Please fasten your seat belts. Once you crack this book open, you won't be able to stop turning the 250 pages of incredible photography. This book had me flying all over the world. From the South Pole to Siberia to Stuttgart, this ship has seen it all and this book put's you right there. It's one adventure after another, carefully organized and narrated by a world class pilot and historian.

I'm No Aircraft Geek, But...

This book is chock full of photos that are excellent and show the DC-3 and its variations in an incredibly diverse number of settings and uses. Pilot/photographer McAllister has assembled photographs that cover the history of the venerable Douglas aircraft in commercial passenger and freight roles, all over the world. It appears as a military aircraft in photos from World War II, the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. There are many pictures of DC-3s in frigid polar settings - Arctic and Antarctic. The text, in deference to the photos, is brief and informative with solid historical documentation of the evolution of the aircraft in various applications. There are wonderful anecdotes that made me smile. The photos range from artistic shots that will have you staring at them for their beauty to historical photos that will take you back in time, remembering historical events. McAllister employs photos with people in them which brings a liveliness and intimacy to the story. This is a terrific coffee table book for the aviation enthusiast, for anyone who loves good photography and for 20th century history buffs. After reading it, one wonders if the growth of aviation would have been nearly as swift without the DC-3.

About the Author
Lynn Ellsworth Taylor is President of Taylor Protocols, Inc., a professional business and human capital management firm from Seattle, Washington. He developed the Core Values Index out of his need to hire the right people for the right jobs. He wanted to better understand, manage, train, coach and motivate the people he was serving. In the early 80s' Taylor worked with Dr. Ed Geiger to develop the first non-invasive cardiac output computer. This work required Taylor to help create algorithms for pattern-recognition and pattern-matching. In 1983, Taylor applied his algorithm knowledge to speech technology creating the first IBM PC- compatible speech recognition system. Frustrated with tests that claimed to improve hiring and give insight someone s personality, Taylor set off on a 15-year mission to perfect an instrument that could accurately measure the innate unchanging capacity of individuals to make certain kinds of contributions. He created a highly reliable 10-minute assessment that reveals a persons innate, unchanging Core Values Nature. In 1998, he began using the CVI as his diagnostic algorithms to develop Top Performer Profiles, the central technology of his new Employment Pre-Selection Sciences. The accuracy of the tool and the effectiveness of the sciences have allowed hundreds of companies to achieve extraordinary growth in the top and bottom line simultaneously helping individuals find their place of highest and best contribution.

Read it, use it, keep it on our office shelf for reference. Similar to Emotional Intelligence, the is a good consistent approach to assist people to better understand themselves and their behavior in dealing with others.

Helps to understand the Core Values

As a CVI Certified Practitioner, I find this book invaluable in helping my clients better understand not only which of the quadrants they fall in, but what it means to their life, decisions they have made, and perhaps avoid decisions that are not to their highest good in the future. The CVI is not your typical assessment as it goes into your soul values - who you are at your core before parents, school, life got in the way of knowing who you truly are. interesting, but sometimes too much of a hard sell

I appreciate the idea of core values and the explanation about each of the contributor styles. This was very useful and something that I would have liked to understand better, perhaps through a more extensive use of examples and case studies. There are good points to take away though and I will continue looking for books on how to identify, align with and use core values.
