A true account of how two high school football coaches molded an undistinguished group of young men into state champions in 1962, this book features a dramatic 40-year retrospective from the players themselves on how the principles instilled in them have continued to shape their lives in positive ways long after leaving the football field. The story is a testament to the profound impact leaders can have on other people’s lives, whether they are educators, coaches, business leaders, clergy, or counselors.

Review
Coached for Life captures the essence of what it means to be a coach. It describes the philosophies that work in the arena of sport, and the philosophies that work in life. I recommend it to everyone who wants to succeed in eitheror both.” Bobby Bowden, head football coach, Florida State University
This is not a tale of gridiron glory, nor one of glamorous careers. It is instead a blend of stories capturing the greatness that is realized when ordinary people do ordinary things extraordinarily well.’ It also serves to remind us why Coach’ is a lifetime honorific.” Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus, University of Notre Dame
Coached for Life gives wonderful accolades to the great work our teachers and coaches do in America everyday.” Glen Taylor, owner, Minnesota Timberwolves

"Ordinary people doing ordinary things extraordinarily well."
By Catherine Glynn
That quote above, attributed to John Gagliardi of Saint John's University in Collegeville, MN, runs thematically throughout "Coached for Life" and it struck a profound chord with me. Not only did I have the distinct privilege of attending the school where Gags has earned the title of being Football's 'winningest coach,' but I also have the great pleasure of being an Executive Coach.
As a former high school athlete myself--who believes the rigors of the playing field absolutely influence our lives for the better--I utilize sports analogies with almost all of my clients. And reading through this book brought to mind what I love most about my coaching career: I have the ability through my interactions, which by and large are fairly ordinary, to help others do extraordinary things with their lives.
In this day and age when reality TV creates a celebrity a minute, it's incredibly heartening to read about real men whose goal in life wasn't celebrity but rather to live well and pass it on.
In "Coached for Life" Uldrich and Flaherty remind us with --fabulous real life examples-- just how powerful the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance are, and continue to be, particularly if they are taught well and by people who practice what they preach.
I recommend this book to anyone who plays, played, or loves sports, and strives to do the best they can with what they have. "Coached for Life" is an excellent reminder that we all have the opportunity to be coaches, and if we took that job more seriously, the world really could be a better place.

Excellent Leadership Book - and full of encouragement!
By Kim
Sometimes, when you pour into people's lives, you wonder if you are making a difference.
At Great Falls Central, in 1962, coaches Bill Mehrens and John "Poncho" McMahon didn't spend their time wondering about their impact, they spent their time shaping lives.
In Coached for Life, you will find the stories of 37 football players and several other students whose lives were impacted. You will hear the stories of their formations, and see the results through the next 40 years. These men and women didn't just grow up to be vacuum salesmen (nothing wrong with vacuum salesmen) - they grew up to be world changers.
You should read this book if:
» You make a habit of reading leadership books
» You want to be a leader (therefore you should make a habit of reading leadership books)
» You need some new sports illustrations for your sermons
» You need encouragement
» You work with kids in any capacity.
This book in deliberately laid out. We march through the 1962 season, one game at a time, while being introduced to the players, sometimes one at a time, sometimes four at a time, and find out who the kids were; what their character and life issues were; what the coaches did to pour into their lives and help shape them; and how that impacted them immediately as well as later in life. Each chapter also has a particular leadership focus and take-away nugget.
Here's a couple of my favorites:
"Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price all of us pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile." - Vince Lombardi
"It is a fine thing to have ability, but the ability to discover ability in others is the true test." -Elbert Hubbard
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit" -Aristotle
I could quote several more, but this is just a sampling.
I highly recommend this book - not just for it's entertainment value, but for the human potential. Each of us needs to be better, and each of us can be better. You will become better by reading this book

Motivational and encouraging!
By Cafe Lily
If you have any sports fans in your circle of influence, I highly recommend this book. Although it is inspirational enough to be enjoyed by the average reader, sports fans and enthusiasts will really connect with this book. This would also make a fantastic gift for the coaches in your life - sports related or otherwise, teachers, mentors, anyone involved in changing the lives of others. I completely agree with one of the forwards in the book that suggest this would make a great movie!
Coached for Life is the true story of Bill Mehrens and John McMahon - two coaches who took an unlikely group of young men from a small Catholic high school football team and made them into champions. I love that each chapter not only shares an inspirational story about the players but also has a "game plan" page at the end which includes coaching for life tips, quotes to remember, and key questions to answer. At the start of each chapter there is an inspirational quote along with small photos of the person being featured.
Coached for Life is motivational, inspirational and encouraging to read and also testifies to the power we have when we plant something positive in someone's life.
