An absorbing account of the problem of neglected children

Schlaack delivers an engaging, disturbing and authoritative portrayal of the difficult lives of children who suffer from neglect and abuse at the hands of their caretakers. Schlaack weaves together a number of captivating stories from actual cases, as well as an insider's view of the "system" to give the reader a deep and nuanced view of both the human toll and community response.
While the problem of neglect and abuse seems an intractable issue, readers of "Invisible Kids" will sense the hope in bringing these stories to light. The book evokes equal amounts of sympathy and clinical precision to navigate the painful but important territory. As a starting point, Schlaack portrays the tragic and brutal death of Marcus Fiesel at the hands of his foster parents to inspire a narrative that is excellent reading and a step forward in itself.

A Must Read For Anyone Who Cares About Children

Invisible Kids Marcus Fiesel's Legacy grabs you from the very first word and holds on to you long after you finish the book.
Don't be afraid to read this! It is easy to finish because you won't be able to put it down.
Don't be afraid that it is too scary or too graphic. It's just right.
Holly Schlaack struck the perfect balance in writing a book that is truly a labor of love.
Our world does not value children. We do not make their safety, education, mental or physical health a priority. With all the bullying, sexual assault, neglect and physical abuse/torture, its no wonder that children die, grow up to abuse, have children themselves, or become criminals in ever increasing numbers.
Holly calls society to task and suggests ways for individuals to make a difference in the life of a child.
Everyone should read "Invisible Kids." Every parent, every judge, every social worker, every government official, every employer...
Do not let these stories or the lives of the children depicted in "Invisible Kids" float off into the ether without at least acknowledging the issues they face and how our society will be affected moving forward.

Riveting Account of the Foster Care System

This is a poignant book that discusses what works in the foster care system and also points out the problems in the system and what needs to be changed. Most importantly, the author writes about how change can be accomplished and what each individual can do to make a difference. It begins with a riveting account of how the system failed one young boy. The story is difficult to read as is any case of abuse, but it must be told and remembered. Too often stories of child abuse reach the headlines, but are quickly forgotten. This author's style of writing allows you to understand the intricacies of how the foster care system works--and how it fails at times--and this is accomplished in a way that any lay person can understand. While important statistics are given to help the reader understand the bigger picture, the reader will not stumble upon professional jargon. This is a must read not just for those in the helping profession, but for any person who cares about children. You will walk away from this book with a sense of hope that things can change and that you can have a role in making a difference in a child's life.
