About the Author
Christopher Jon Luke Dowgin was born in Princeton University and grew up in the Jersey Pine Barrens before moving into Salem 18 years ago. Since then it has been his home. His love of the Fairy Tale and its structure can be seen through his somewhat historical take on Salem. The story just shows what can happen when you pay attention to your surroundings and its history. Chris is owner of Dowgin Industries and a life coach in town. His many professions have included being a psychic, haunted house actor, web designer, performance artist, flautist, illustrator, Buddhist caterer, and recently banquet hall owner. Plus he is a proud resident of the Collins Cove Neighborhood.

I ordered a copy of Kyle Lamb's new book: Green Eyes and Black Rifles last week. It showed up on my doorstep just in time for me to use it as my go to bed book.... Even after several hours of driving and two glasses of wine, I nearly read the whole book before drifting off. It was that engaging. This book is the most well put together data dump of current black rifle tactical shooting skills I have ever seen. I am highly impressed. Kyle Lamb, of Viking Tactics, has all of the credentials needed to write such an authoritative guide. What impresses me more is the acknowledgement he gives throughout the book to his former teammates for assisting him in laying it down on paper. I consider this a must have book for those who aspire to shoot black rifles tactically. My circle will be complete if another book on tactical pistol shooting happens to spring from Kyle and his buddies' minds into bound paper. Got Carbines? Buy This!

They're right.
Some have mentioned the lack of information where the AR15/M16 is concerned.
They're right, too.

On the first aspect, the author's a Soldier, not an English teacher. Something happened to his editor and his daughter had to take over the editing. Maybe he can get these grammar issues fixed for the next edition - maybe not. As it is, there is no confusion whatsoever about what Mr. Lamb is saying, so for me, the grammar isn't an issue.

On the second, there are many books out there that cover this weapon's history in detail. Doing so in this book wasn't necessary, and had Mr. Lamb attempted to do so in this book, it would have detracted from his work.

What Mr. Lamb DOES do, is share tips and techniques that he's learned over the years, and he does it well. He leads you through equipment selection, layout, and usage. He covers practically every malfunction that a carbine is likely to suffer, and he shows you simple and fast ways to clear them. He lists drills that you can do to improve your efficiency. One of the best tips he gives is how to do a proper 'press check' in the carbine.

Earlier reviewers have commented that Mr. Lamb does not write with a 'my way or the highway' attitude, and that his book is pure 'meat and potatoes' information. Those guys are 100% spot-on. No fluff, no filler, just what you need.

This isn't exactly an entry-level book. As he mentions up front, he assumes that the reader already is already familiar with the care and feeding of the AR15/M16. However, if you're just getting into the world of the carbine, he does give some good pointers on features and accessories that you may/may not want in your own weapon, so this book is still a good purchase for you.

I've dealt with ARs for over 20 years, taken classes, etc. and I can tell you that this book is one of the most solid purchases that I've made book-wise.

Bottom line: If you want to further your education in combat weaponcraft, buy this book.

No wasted space, just tons of great info

This is a great book about training, equipment and implementation of the weapons systems written from an operators perspective. It is geared towards the person with a good thorough understanding of the weapon systems and tactics. You don't need to be a Special Forces soldier or Navy SEAL to make use of this book, but you need a good grounding in the fundamentals to get maximum benefit from it.

This book is written by a retired Special Forces operator and much of the terminology will be familiar to those with a military background. While the armed citizen will find a ton of useful information in this book, it seems heavily slanted towards military style operations and all out gun fights. This may be more useful for the typical military or police user but the amount of information means anyone who may go into harms way will find parts useful.

I don't want to sound as if there are prerequisites for this book, I think that anyone who picks it up will find a lot of useful information. There are tons of tips and trick to be picked up. The information isn't presents in a 'my way or the highway manner' but from the perspective of 'here are some things that work for me'. This manner of presenting data appeals very much to me because there are always more than one way to do something. One way isn't always going to be the best way and many people have systems that work. There is a great deal of data in the book and it is well worth the price of entry.

Priceless piece of work

It's important to realize that Kyle's book is a tribute to the operators that first nurtured him in his early years, several of who very sadly lost their lives in Mogadishu. Kyle lived the book's content for over 20 years. He developed many of the techniques on his own and refined many others, and not necessarily from simple flat range static shooting or competition matches but rather while the distinctive crack of the enemies' round s passed by his head - when needed feedback was immediate. And, as Frogman said in his review, Kyle incorporated the knowledge and experience of his fellow operators learned throughout those two decades and practiced successfully in some of the most inhospitable places on earth. Even so, in a world class organization that prioritizes accurate rifle and pistol shooting above all else - and like no one else - Kyle truly has few peers. Even those of us who have had the honor of Kyle's presence and experiencing his warrior psyche first hand reference this book constantly, as do the very busy current operators that still go to work in the war on terror daily. If you carry a carbine at work or play, you need to have this book in your carry-on luggage. Hopefully, Kyle will follow this blockbuster with a sequel on the combat pistol.

Don't trade without it!

A timely tome on the financial markets. It sets the record straight on such disgraced strategies as 'Buy and Hold' and offers new and important thinking on a market that is rapidly and radically changing before our eyes.
I specifically found the chapters about contrary thinking and The Case for Trading Ranges highly illuminating. The Strategies section is also filled with invaluable information, explaining the importance of trading with the trend, targeting your run and understanding when to take your profits (perhaps the most important step of all).

not worth the money, take a closer look before buying

I would not recommend this book, especially compared to Cosentino's "Case in Point" book. Let me give a few reasons why:

Considering the price paid ($30) I was a little bit taken aback by the thin content when the book arrived at my house. The book is about 90 pages long, if you're generous. Content starts on page 7, and between that and the end at page 89, there are 12 blank or essentially blank pages (of which several are fill in the box pages for you to do work on the example problems -- do we really need this?), followed by 3 tables/charts for use with the problems, and a few supplemental pages and index. On first opening, I'm sorry to say it gave me the feeling of an elementary school workbook.

The page count of course, in itself, need not be a signal of whether the book is good, but the content on the remaining pages is also rather thin. In the introduction and first chapter, there are a few pages on the lifestyle of a consultant, resume format tips (which you have already gotten past if you're getting this book), networking techniques, all of which are covered better in other books, and not the primary reason for buying this one.

In the 55-60 remaining pages after taking away the above extraneous elements, the example problems are standard fare, and present some interesting, but not mindblowing ways to attack them with a framework. I don't think the single framework proposed is really *that* amazing, the way people have commented here.

Most of all, what struck me when comparing with the Cosentino book, is that in the example problems, aside from the 3 with supplemental charts (which is also odd -- why do relevant charts have to appear at the back, separate from the problems?), they are just lacking the fleshed out problem data for you to practice with. I don't mean they're not specific, but the Cosentino book regularly provides tables of sales figures, market data, example charts and tables, etc with almost every problem. The problems in this book seem a bit vague in comparison, with brief answer outlines and occasionally supplemental data provided. Combined with the 3 charts placed almost as an afterthought at the end, it makes it seem like the problems in this book were just not really compiled from careful examples. You can just see the difference in detail if you compare.

The most amazing thing I discovered after reading the book, which I must point out as a warning to others who rely on Amazon product reviews, is that to begin with, I was wondering how everyone seemed to provide amazing comments on the book here, making it sound like the 2nd coming of Christ, like a lifechanging read. It's ok at best, but consistently 5 stars from everyone?? Well, if you look at some of the Amazon commenters who have given 5 stars to this book, they magically also appear in the back of the book's acknowledgments! Surprised? J.Wu, Sachin Kotwani, Joshua Swartz, among those who've commented here, these are all names found in the book listed as contributors! And who knows about all the other similar glowingly positive reviews all submitted on or around April 8, 2008? The book only came out at the end of March. Did the author stoop to asking his friends to shill for him here? A bit ridiculous, don't you think?

I will be sending this book back for a refund, and keeping the Cosentino book, which costs only $20 for much more content.

Unfortunately, I had high hopes for this book from all the descriptions, but was disappointed on receiving the real thing.

Very good literature for getting started in consulting

Coming from math school, business cases were a bit intimidating and
unfamiliar to me. Nevertheless, I wanted to get into management consulting. Darling's book really helped me understanding the whole process of case interviews better. However, practising case interviews online at Preplounge.com was just as important in my preparation. Well, something must have worked because I landed a job offer from Bain and Company. I can really speak for those coming from a math or any other background than business school: read the book, understand the process, but also practise real cases like you can on Preplounge.

A solid book on "30-minute problem solving"

The obvious comparison to this book is Marc Cosentino's Case In Point, which has been a best-seller in case interview preparation for many years. So perhaps the most obvious place to start a review is to say how this book differs from that.

The focus of Darling's book is on problem solving and how to get your hands dirty with a problem for 15 minutes, then to come up again for air and communicate a coherent, polished recommendation based on it. The problem-solving tips he suggest are simplified - but still surprisingly effective - variations of the problem-solving techniques used by strategic management consultants. Key topics include defining the problem/objective, building a MECE tree to disaggregate the key drivers of the problem, and understanding how to analyze that tree to solve the problem.

Most interesting to me (as someone with an MBA and 2 previous years' experience in a strategic consulting firm) was his explanation of how to use the various industry standard frameworks (such as the 3 C's, Porter's 5 Forces, the Value Chain, the 4 P's ...). In my previous experience, as with Cosentino's book, these frameworks were just thrown into a general toolkit with little guidance offered on how to use them. Do you know how and when to use the 3 C's or 5 Forces while solving a generic business problem? Darling offers his thoughts and they are very lucid and insightful. I don't know that they are the "right" or only answers, but his vision is well worth reading and considering for anyone in business - not just consultants, and certainly not just consultant firm candidates.

This brings me to the contrast with Cosentino's book. Cosentino offers more tools for your toolkit; Darling offers fewer tools with more detailed explanations. Cosentino falls on the side of learning the "answers" to a set of problems ahead of time and demonstrating your poise and polish in presenting them; Darling falls on the side of learning a general problem-solving technique and showing you can be a force in the team room with polish and poise saved for the end of the interview.

Which book or approach is better? Again, I don't know -- but as a pair, they make an interesting enough contrast that any serious candidate should most certainly read both.

First, some of the items covered in the book are not really related to sex, but development and social items. Second, the voice in which it's written is, for lack of a better term.. baby-ish. I bought this with S.E.X and found that book to be FAR more useful. My kids actually laughed at this book, however they are mid-teens and we'd already had all the discussions covered by this publication. This is geared toward a younger set I think, so if you are going to give it to your child I'd say 12-13 is the target range, maybe 11 for more mature kids. I would not have bought this had I reviewed it in a store first..

I bought this book for my daughter who is turning 13. She is not an avid reader (to say the least). She actually loved this book and read 75 pages in one shot.

A great and unique resource!

I read parts of this book and was thrilled. I immediately bought three copies for my teen-agers and will recommend it to other parents and teens. The questions are classics, and answers written in straight-forward, direct ways. They're written from one adult to another. I'm so pleased that this book was written and only wish I'd had it as a teen.
