Easy, highly informative green painting guide

The book is comprehensive in reviewing many of the foundational basics of painting. I also learned several new tips, from determining how much paint to order to how to ascertain which paints, tools and techniques are environmentally friendly. We just finished the rest of the lower level of our home and this proved to be a great resource. I recommend it for others undertaking home or office projects.

This is a fantastic book for all of us who want to do our own room painting in an ecologically sensitive manner! Fantastic photos and text take you from prepping to paint disposal. Clearly written directions/guidelines for the novice painter...such as myself!

This book is long overdue! It's time to get serious about the choices we make!

About the Author
J. Clark Scott has had a long and diverse career in the computer industry, starting at large companies such as IBM and Intel, and eventually becoming the author of four successful consumer software packages. Early in his career, he noticed how confused some of his friends were about computers and gave them lectures to teach them how simple the basics really were. It was at that time that the idea for this book was born. This is his first book, but one that has been in the works for decades.

The standard first textbook on computers for everyone

I have been a software developer and software architect for over 40 years, starting at a time when you worked "so close to the computer" that you naturally knew how they worked. Over the years, I have seen that knowledge more and more absent from each new generation of developers that came along that I have led and mentored. It seems that the fundamentals simply aren't taught any more.

My standard approach has been to give informal seminars to my developers to get them this vital information. But I have been looking far and wide for a book that describes exactly how a computer operates that could be understood by anyone. After all this time, I finally found it. (As Archimedes would have said, "Eureka!")

This book builds up gradually from first principles until without realizing it, the reader suddenly finds he or she knows all about how computers work.

Mr. Scott defines every technical word the first time he uses it so you are never left wondering what it all means. Nothing I have seen even comes close to this book. It must have taken a lot of painstaking effort to work out and refine how to present every detail in a way that would not lose anybody along the way, no matter what their level of knowledge at the beginning.

Once the first copy arrived and I went through it in detail, I realized that this was what I had been looking for to provide the fundamentals that junior developers needed but had never been taught. So I bought 20 more copies and made the book the first step in the required curriculum to train my whole company -- but not just the "computer guys", everyone who uses a computer for any purpose.

The beauty is that this is not just a book for people who want to be or become computer professionals, it is a great textbook for all ages -- schools, homeschooling, college and anyone who is just curious about how computers work.

The book is so well written. It is informal, easy to understand and definitely complete.

There is a lady in my company who works with computers but had know idea how they really work. With the book, there was no stopping her. I found a simple, free computer program on the web (called LogicSim) that allowed her to actually build circuits (by drag-and-drop) and then click switches and see the results. She can easily apply what she learns right there and is very excited about what she has learned and how simple it all is. She has a new-found confidence in her work that is observable. Many others have expressed how easy it is to read and understand.

If you want to drive a car effectively, it is a pretty good idea to know the basics of how a car works. In the same way, having the knowledge you get from this book helps you with everything you do with computers.

In my opinion, Mr. Scott's book should be the standard first textbook on computers for everyone from now on ... at least until such time as some brand new technology arrives that completely changes the way our computers are built and work, which probably won't be in the foreseeable future.

It really is for Everyone

I am currently a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student and I am enrolled in a Digital Logic course. I found this subject to be very interesting and decided to research further into how computers use simple gates to do such complex functions. That is when I came across this book. Even with the little previous knowledge I had, this book broke everything down - from the simplicity of a register, to the building blocks of the RAM and CPU. It was enlightening to easily read more in depth on an otherwise extremely complex subject and finish the book with the knowledge of how most computers work. I highly recommend this book to my fellow Electrical and Computer engineering colleagues.

But don't think that just because engineering students find use of this book, that it is too complicated for those out of the discipline. The author does a great job of breaking down every little necessary nuance of each building block and thoroughly describes how each block works together to make a computer work; all wrapped up in a short ~200 page book. It is written without complex, technical jargon which avoids confusion wherever possible, and is readable by most who have a strong desire to learn more about how computers work.

This was such an interesting and informative read. Again, I highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest curiosity about how a computer works.

Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how ...

I have always been interested in electronics and computers. My father was a old-time main frame COBOL and FORTRAN programmer and he was always very nebulous to me about how a computer actually worked. What I've always wanted to understand is how a computer uses basic physical principles (circuits) to generate logic - I understood Claude Shannon's original thesis on the idea of use simple relays for Boolean logic but I never made the jump to higher order processes. This book is the bridge! The author makes it very simplistic from the start and builds slowly to more complex ideas until - before you know it - you basically understand how the electronic circuits create the abstract ideas of registers/buses/memory address...etc.... Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how your program ultimately is broken down into the basics of circuits, this is the book for you.

Christopher Higgs was born in Kansas, grew up in Wyoming, went to film school in Las Vegas, worked in the film industry in Los Angeles, volunteered for the Peace Corps in West Africa, got his MA in English at the University of Nebraska, got his MFA in creative writing at The Ohio State University, and is currently working on his PhD in literature and critical theory at Florida State University. He curates the online arts journal Bright Stupid Confetti and contributes to the literary website HTMLGIANT.

Not your average, "Thank you, come again."

Christopher Higgs or Marvin K. Mooney, whichever you take the dive with, wants to get into your head, mess with your radio antennas and fuzz around with the Gestapo in your brain - until you call it quits. Once you unlock that door, you are welcoming an order of interesting dynamics where he will be tearing up your "realistic" dimension through a realm of pages you did not know existed.
I will admit that through reading the first hundred or so pages, I did not know what the hell was going on. Half the time, I couldn't quite capture the ideas in Mooney's mind - but to have felt them in a different state of mind of my own, on a different psychological level, is more than what a solid ten or fifteen bucks can get you. I felt as if I must have been drunk off of words; I've never had a drink in my life.

I didn't just buy this book. I keep it bedside. I bring it on sets and read passages to crew members. I even bought my English professor a copy. Christopher Higgs is an unquestionably intellectual and challenging writer. In merely simplistic terms: if you do not understand your own life - or life for that matter - you probably will not understand Marvin K. Mooney's, but that is the beauty of it; questions suffocating questions with a birth of a new character not only in a new novel you might throw on your pile of procrastination, but one that you will grasp in the creeps of bedtime (or so I did). I cannot really give you a description modifying the theme or tone of this novel, but if I may say that it was shape-shifting with contrasting tones for life, through vague, dry and hysterical implications - I say it in the best way. I loved it.

The Real Mooney

You might have discovered this book by mistake. You might have been searching for The Complete Encyclopedia of Horse Racing by Bill Mooney. But The Complete Works of Marvin K. Mooney is infinitely better on so many levels. It's like getting two, three, five books for the price of one. That deserves five stars as it is. Not to mention how wildly inventive and quote original unquote it is. I imagine Marvin K. Mooney might have disproved of Amazon star reviews. Maybe he would have preferred readers to discover a battered copy of this book on a dusty shelf at the back of a charity shop. So buy this book. Tell your friends to buy this book. Read it until the pages look battered. In ten years donate it to charity.

The Brilliance of Marvin K. Mooney

Reading The Complete Works of Marvin K. Mooney feels an awful lot like those moments of sheer enigmatic brilliance one never often enough achieves where the flow of sense trickles down from an infinity becoming finite words and creating images in the mind that make everything speak clearly. It is playful in format forgoing the unnatural story arch to follow its own natural progression. It is captivating, immediately, and throughout. Once inside this work you will not want to leave. It leads, you follow, and throughout there is something about the way Higgs puts a sentence together that makes each seem a complete gift to the reader. In the moment where Mooney first addresses the reader I gave myself over willfully and dove in. And dive in you should. It is one of the finest examples of how human words can be.

A must read for animal lovers!

This book illustrates the bond one can feel with animals.

I've owned a guinea pig for a couple years now. Her name is Fluffy, and I'm pretty sure she flirts with me. She squeaks enthusiastically when I pet her back, lets me feed her alfalfa sprouts by hand, and sometimes lightly nibbles on my fingers.

After reading Wet Goddess, I now know that Fluffy IS flirting with me and signaling that she wants a more intimate relationship. I told her it's time to stop playing games and let's do this if we're gonna do this. She seemed receptive, so I'm taking her out on a date this Friday. We're doing a tour of a mulching company and will sample some wood chips at the end of it. After we've had our fill, we'll go the McDonalds playland because they have those tubes you can crawl in, and I know Fluffy loves crawling thru tubes.

Look, I know people are going to judge when they see me walking around town with a gorgeous guinea pig in my arms, but whatever. They're just jealous haters who don't understand the bond one can feel with a different species.

There will be obstacles to overcome in this relationship, but there are challenges in every relationship. It's all about compromise. I'm trying to teach Fluffy to stop pooping on herself, and she's teaching me how to drink water from an upside-down bottle.

I'll check back here in a few weeks to let everyone know how my relationship with Fluffy is going. Until then, I implore all people to read Wet Goddess before they pursue an inter-species relationship.
