About the Author
In addition to being an Instrument rated Commercial Helicopter & Airplane Pilot, Richard is also a Certificated Flight Instructor for Helicopters as well as an Advanced & Instrument Ground Instructor. Richard has worked in Emergency Management and as a Flight Paramedic for the last 18 years. He has managed several air medical programs, has helped start two programs from the ground up, and worked as Base Supervisor for several CAMTS accredited rotor-wing programs. He is Instructor credentialed in BCLS, ACLS, PALS, ITLS, NRP, PEPP, PHTLS, ENPC, and EMT-Paramedic. Richard oversees the daily operations of Critical Care Concepts; a State approved ALS Training Agency with the Virginia Office of EMS, and has provided training programs in approximately 10 US States, as well as Canada, South America, Central America, and South Korea, in a multitude of areas. In addition to being a regular contributing writer for three air medical industry magazines, his work has also been published in various nursing and EMS journal publications. Outline, not a review book

I purchased the book as well as the c.ds.
I read several pages into the text, thinking I was browsing an outline for chapter one- many primary subjects with bullet point formats beneath. Often the bullets were indicating subjects to know, with none of the substance of said subjects, leaving one simply aware of topics requiring research with other texts. There are no discernible chapters! Often, there are review tests following certain pages of information, in multiple choice format. Some of these offer responses in typical, a,b or c, choices. Then then next practice exam/review quiz will have all possible responses to a question in bullets!
The book seems to carry on with very little rhyme or reason. Very few patterns in the structure of the information being provided.
There are many pictures of the author as well as an actual letter of recommendation throughout the book. He/they are without a doubt, knowledgeable and accomplished and It does not need to be proven with self-congratulating photos and letters throughout the text.
There is a lot of good information provided within this book, but it is so poorly presented and disorganized that I would hesitate to suggest it to anyone preparing for exams.
The c.d's also had great information which is actually presented fairly well with good speakers. However, there is a lot of background noise, poor sound quality and often times the "take-home" points are obscured by these distractions.

Unfortunately, this book was a $40 waste of money.

I haven't read the actual Critical Care Patient Transport text, but the format of this e-book horrible and comes without a navigable table of contents.

Excellent outline of information that needs to be learned. However, if there is something that you do not know, there is little explanation about the rational for standard and you would need to look up information elsewhere. Could use a bit more visual (pictures, diagram, examples, etc.).

Thorough and well researched

Karen Ranzi's new book, "Creating Healthy Children Through Attachment Parenting and Raw Foods," is one of those books that seems to take an eternity to finish -- not because it is not interesting, but because it is so full of information.

I was not sure what to expect when I first started the book. I am a firm believer in Attachment Parenting, but I could never be called a raw food enthusiast. I lean towards a vegetarian (often vegan), organic, all natural diet, but it is generally cooked and I had no desire to change that.

That said, I found the book fascinating, informative and incredibly well researched, and have already made small changes in my food choices and my family's. I do not intend to switch to a completely raw food diet, but Ranzi makes it clear that I don't have to in order to still see some benefits of raw foods.

Subjects included in the nearly 500-page book include: The health of the parents before conception, home birth, circumcision, diet during pregnancy, the B12 question, breastfeeding, the importance of skin-to-skin contact, co-sleeping, feeding baby uncooked foods, teaching children how to eat, personal care products for children, children's exercise and ventilation, transitioning children to raw foods, kid-tested recipes, Essential Fatty Acids, vitamins and minerals, eliminating causes of illnesses, water needs, genetic engineering, homeschooling, nonviolent communication with children, vaccinations, dental health, vision health, the importance of the sun, questions from parents, stories of raw families and their journeys and more.

When I first began reading, I have to admit to feeling rather overwhelmed and depressed. Ranzi lists so many health risks that adopting her lifestyle may seem impossible to some (and this is coming from someone who already makes a concerted effort to live a healthy lifestyle). From the chlorine in your shower water to the toxic molds in peanut butter, it can seem that nothing is safe.

By the time I finished the book, however, I had put those elements in perspective. I now feel more educated and empowered, and see that information as simply knowledge and perspectives to use as I see fit.

As parents, we tend to accumulate vast amounts of information on our journeys. We research, we ask questions, we learn from our own mistakes and we eventually emerge with so much wisdom to pass on. With this book, I feel that Karen Ranzi has gathered all the knowledge of her own parenting and health journeys in one place for those beginning their own.

The book is incredibly well researched and Ranzi quotes her sources extensively. In the chapter about B12, for instance, she tells all perspectives and lists so many studies that I felt as if I could pass a test by the time I finished it. The chapter about circumcision is twelve pages long and includes a personal story of a mother who became an anti-circumcision activist and two full pages of books, websites, videos, organizations and other resources on the subject.

Karen Ranzi shares her knowledge and beliefs without concern for whether people see her as a radical or disagree. The book is not watered down in an attempt to please every reader or avoid ruffling feathers. Ranzi quite simply shares what she believes is best for children, from breastfeeding to avoiding vaccination to choosing organic foods, and why.

Ranzi also talks about common pitfalls of raw food diets, such as relying too heavily on dried fruits (which harm the teeth) and nuts (which are high in fat and not necessary in large quantities).

Since I began reading this book, my twelve year-old daughter decided to begin eating raw. In the past, I might have worried about her protein intake, vitamin needs and other issues. Armed with Creating Healthy Children, I feel completely comfortable with her decision and have been able to help her choose good foods and prepare simple recipes (Ranzi's recipes do tend to be very simple indeed since she advocates consuming whole fresh foods most of the time).

I highly recommend this book and plan to keep it in my personal collection. I am still not ready to switch to an all-raw diet, but I have been serving more salads, smoothies and fresh fruits for snacks and meals. Who knows what the future may hold.

Creating Healthy children

Teh book is a wonderful reference tool if you are thinking about having a baby and what to do to get your body in a place it should be to conceive in a healthy environment. I was looking for more of a after you had children and want to get them on a healthy way of life through raw foods. Mayube with some transitional recipes. So the book hasn't fit me needs but would be great for someone pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and then just given birth.

In the Judeo-Christian Bible, Proverbs 22:6 says "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." It is great to see that someone takes this seriously.

Karen Ranzi, an author, speaker and consultant, has taken raw to a whole new level in her book "Creating Healthy Children." The majority of my reviews are all about the "me." In other words, it is food that "I" eat; it is products that "I" use and it is a recipe that "I" will prepare. Karen's book takes raw and health to a new level. Her book is all about preparing us to prepare the next generation. Having seen what the Standard American Diet (S.A.D) did to one of her parents, and knowing the difference that changing to a raw diet lifestyle did for her, she decided to share with her readers the advantages to a raw and healthy diet for our children. From the womb through adolescence, her book takes us through the necessary steps to a healthy childhood. Allow me a moment to share with you, my reader, why I think everyone needs this book in his or her library.

Even before opening the cover, I was impressed by the quality and obvious professionalism that went into publishing this book. The cover, each of the 496 pages and the photographs appear to be well thought out and prepared with the reader in mind. The easy to follow index and the helpful appendices lead me directly to areas of the book that I needed to refer back to when I had questions.

Unlike many authors who I read and review, Karen does not seem to be afraid to quote her sources, and whenever medical jargon might be confusing to the reader, she is quick to offer an explanation. While many "raw" and "health" books state opinion after opinion, this book states the facts necessary to back up any claims she has made. The appendices give websites, periodicals and other references for further information. But, enough about that, let's get on with the book's contents.

I was inspired when I first opened the book and discovered that the forewords were written by an M.D. and a Ph.D. This always adds credibility to a book in a field where everyone seems to want to write about something, and they are all "experts." Then, as I began to read "My Story," a chapter about Karen's life, I realized that this was not just a happy-go-lucky, feel-good book. I understand that Karen was going to stick with the facts, whether they were "warm and fuzzy" or "hard and cruel." One sentence made me laugh, while the next made me want to cry. Her attention to detail and information is phenomenal, which made the reading more interesting.

I was interested in her approach early in the book with regards to the parents. I expected the book to be all about "healthy children," and did not even consider that "healthy children" need to come from "healthy parents." This was a pleasant realization, and the book points out that healthy children begin before conception. Then, she touts the benefits of home childbirth in the next chapter, and reminds the reader that medical intervention is only one danger of a hospital birth.

Karen seems very concerned about the amount of fats and proteins in the diet of pregnant women, and rightfully so. The incidence of early puberty in girls, obesity and other health issues are addressed with accuracy and fact-filled information. While promoting a reduction of fat in the diet, the author points out that many foods are rich in protein, yet S.A.D. does not push these as high-protein foods. The amount of information to the public is deceptive about where these proteins should come from, and how much protein our bodies actually need.

In another part of the book, a whole chapter is dedicated to the myth that vegans and children of vegans are going to experience medical problems because of a lack of B12 in their bodies. The author offers options for increasing B12, as well as medical information on whether this is even necessary. But, as a true informer, Karen confronts both sides of the issue and how it affects her readers. This chapter then moves into the next section involving breast-feeding and attachment parenting.

It makes sense that mothers should breastfeed their infants. Karen references many sources which show how advantageous breastfeeding is since the infant is readily able to digest the mother's milk. It is all very natural and this common sense approach seems best. Although I found the lead-in to attachment parenting to be informative and interesting, I do not feel qualified to review this aspect of the book. Skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the infant seems important to me, but as a man, I have to yield to a woman's expertise in this area.

The information on feeding a baby uncooked food and teaching a child how to eat was for me, the most important part of the book. Imagine where we would all be today if our mothers had started us eating correctly from the womb. Obesity, as well as many diseases would be a thing of the past. However, that is not the world in which we live, and the next chapter on "Transitioning Older Children to Raw Foods" addresses that need in today's society. With the prevalence of fast food restaurants, junk food in the grocery stores, snack foods being served and sold in schools, it is no wonder that our children are in terrible shape both physically and emotionally. If a million families would follow the advice set-forth in this book, two to three million children could be saved from an early death, as well as billions of dollars saved in future medical bills, much of which are going to have to be paid by a strapped government system. The United States Government should consider buying one of these books for every American home as part of the stimulus package. Stimulate healthy kids to save the government money. What a concept!!

Much of the remainder of the book is dedicated to recipes for children (ok, adults, too - I have already used some and they are great) along with testimonials from raw families and how it has affected their lives. The stories all brought smiles to my face when I read how a raw lifestyle changed their lives. Having been through the transformation myself, I know what a life changing and life saving experience it can be.

Question: In today’s world, where terror and tragedy seem omnipresent, the fear of violence never seems more heightened. Is the world a more violent place than it ever has been?

Gavin de Becker : Your question contains much of the answer: today’s world, "where terror and tragedy seem omnipresent..." The key word is "seem." When TV news coverage presents so much on these topics, it elevates the perception of terrorism and tragedy way beyond the reality. In every major city, TV news creates forty hours of original production every day, most of it composed and presented to get our attention with fear. Hence an incident on an airplane in which a man fails to do any damage is treated as if the make-shift bomb actually exploded. It didn’t. Imagine having a near miss in your car, avoiding what would have been a serious collision--and then talking about every hour for months after the fact. Welcome to TV news.

To the second part of your question, No, the world is not a more violent place than it has ever been, however we live as if it were. The U.S. is the most powerful nation in world history--and also the most afraid.

That uninterrupted and sad statistic can be interrupted and changed--because as explored in The Gift of Fear, spousal homicide is the single most preventable serious crime in America--largely owing to that fact that it always occurs after many warning signs, and after several people are aware of the risk.

Question: Your bestselling book The Gift of Fear gives many examples to help readers recognize what you call pre-incident indicators (PINS) of violence. What role does intuition play in recognizing these signals?

Gavin de Becker: Like every creature on earth, we have an extraordinary defense resource: We don’t have the sharpest claws and strongest jaws--but we do have the biggest brains, and intuition is the most impressive process of these brains. It might be hard to accept its importance because intuition is often described as emotional, unreasonable, or inexplicable. Husbands chide their wives about "feminine intuition" and don’t take it seriously. If intuition is used by a woman to explain some choice she made or a concern she can’t let go of, men roll their eyes and write it off. We much prefer logic, the grounded, explainable, unemotional thought process that ends in a supportable conclusion. In fact, Americans worship logic, even when it’s wrong, and deny intuition, even when it’s right. Men, of course, have their own version of intuition, not so light and inconsequential, they tell themselves, as that feminine stuff. Theirs is more viscerally named a "gut feeling," but whatever name we use, it isn’t just a feeling. It is a process more extraordinary and ultimately more logical in the natural order than the most fantastic computer calculation. It is our most complex cognitive process and, at the same time, the simplest.

Intuition connects us to the natural world and to our nature. It carries us to predictions we will later marvel at. "Somehow I knew," we will say about the chance meeting we predicted, or about the unexpected phone call from a distant friend, or the unlikely turnaround in someone’s behavior, or about the violence we steered clear of, or, too often, the violence we elected not to steer clear of. The Gift of Fear offers strategies that help us recognize the signals of intuition--and helps us avoid denial, which is the enemy of safety.

Question: Your latest book, Just 2 Seconds, has been called a "masterpiece" of analysis on the art of preventing assassination. It contains an entire compendium of attacks on protected persons across the globe. What motivated you to put together such a definitive reference? What tenets can be applied to one’s everyday life?

Gavin de Becker: Most of all, we wrote the book we needed. My co-authors and I had long looked for an extensive collection of attack summaries from which important new insights could be harvested. Unable to find it, we committed to do the work ourselves, eventually collecting more than 1400 cases to analyze. Many new insights and concepts emerged from the study, and the one most applicable to day to day life, even for people who are not living with unusual risks, is to be in the present; pre-sent, as it were. Now is the only time anything ever happens--now is where the action is. All focus on anything outside the Now (the past, memory, the future, fantasy) detracts focus from what’s actually happening in your environment. Human being have the capacity to look right at something and not see it, and in studying such a crisp event--the few seconds during which assassinations have occurred--Just 2 Seconds aims to enhance the reader’s ability to see the value of the present moment.

Do not buy if you don't work in the business (but 5 stars if you do)

I bought this after buying The Gift of Fear. For a lay person, The Gift of Fear is a better book. The data in Just 2 Seconds takes up at least half of the book and the rest of it is a very technical analysis of what the data shows: what are the exact steps necessary to protect someone, what you can do to increase your odds under specific circumstances, etc. Make no mistake: it's a fascinating read, just that the lay person isn't its audience. I would have preferred to know that before purchasing.

This book is worth it; it will wake you up to a reality you weren't aware of

This is an excellent read for everyone. I am not a physical protection specialist, not have I ever been. I did once have a determined stalker ( I was reading "The Gift of Fear" (also written by Mr. de Becker) at the time--and I used some of those techniques), and it gave me insights into how a stalker might think over the long run. However, I am a lifelong (40 years) cyber security specialist, and I view this as a reference boo that parallels my own career. It is sobering to read.

This book dispels the myth that "it can't happen here", and "it can't happen to me or someone I know" and makes one realize that it can, and in fact, in might just happen "here" and to "me". I myself have fallen prey to this myth, even though my own training and experience have taught me otherwise. My point is that anyone, ANYONE can be a target for many reasons.

There are several thousand incidents documented by de Becker , and make you understand the whole in which he makes his living (the world in which we live). I consider the Gift of Fear to be a foundational work--it should be read by everyone--but most especially by women. Starting at the age of about 10, if not sooner (under parental supervision). Yes, really. Mr. de Becker has another book along those lines ("Protecting the Gift") , written specifically on that subject.

This man is the expert. He and his staff set the standards in this area. It's foolish in my opinion NOT to read what he says; and ACT on it.

I got the Kindle version of this book because of the fantastic discount; there are updates provided in a link in the book; I'm looking for that link right now because I would like the updates.

This book is worth the read; worth the money; it's a staple in my reference library.

A benchmark for the next evolution in protection

Gavin DeBecker burst onto the mainstream scene with his groundbreaking work 'The Gift of Fear.' DeBecker and Associates have shaken the firmament again with 'Just 2 Seconds.' Just as one cannot go to a serious training event today and not escape a reference to 'The Gift of Fear,' one will not be able to train next year and escape a reference to this new work.

The value of this work is threefold. First, the essential lessons of their extensive research are distilled and well presented in the first part of the book. Leveraging their previous work, and referencing other luminaries in the field of combat psychology (i.e. Col Grossman), the chapters are well delineated and the topics are well beyond those normally found in Protection 101. For example, discussion on Zen and the Art of Protection (ZAP) is not something found elsewhere, and yet is deadly serious.

Second, insights into DeBecker and Associates' own training academy are given to provide a foil for professionals in the protection field to compare/contrast their own programs to. One's own training may be better, worse, or different, but examination allows for a reevaluation of the 'why' behind the 'what and how.' It also gives insight into how the conclusions of their work are translated into practice.

Finally, the compendium provides the research material that supports the conclusions in the first chapters. This alone is amazing, since it is the first summary of attacks against principles (over a 40 year timespan) that I have ever seen.

This is not a beginner's book. Someone interested in protection will not find this a Protection 101 skillset reference. However, make no mistake. This is Protection 521 - this is the graduate material. I firmly believe that 'Just 2 Seconds' will quickly become the new equivalent to the 'Book of Five Rings' for those in the field. It cannot be too highly recommended, and likely those already in possession will be very reluctant to lend out their copy.

A Must Have Reference Guide

The word complete in the title of this book says it all. The book gives extremely detailed and comprehensive information concerning the Suspicious Activity Report, and provides real world examples of its application. This guide is indispensable for any financial institution manager who is involved in combating money laundering. It is also an important reference for government officials involved in the AML/CTF war. Having worked first hand with bankers, financial regulators and financial enforcement elements of the US Government and foreign governments, I highly recommend this book to all involved in this important work.

SAR comprehensive guide

There's a ton of material available on suspicious activity reporting and investigation, but because it is spread out among so many sources, investigators probably don't make much use of those sources on a daily or case by case basis. There is no way to search through stacks of separate documents to find specific information quickly (for example, seven years worth of SAR Activity Reviews). This book,however, negates the need to do so. There is alot of info you have seen before, but never in one place. Information on specific topics appears to be an amalgam of detail combined from multiple sources. There is also excellent treatment of step by step procedures for conducting suspicious activity investigations as well as very interesting coverage of internet sources for investigation purposes, which alone justify purchasing this book.

Indispensable Reference Guide

This book is an incredible collection of information that extracts huge amounts of material from AML source litereature related to unusual and suspicious activity detection/reporting. I found the sections on using various internet sources extremely valuable, and there is excellent coverage regarding methodologies for conducting financial crimes investigations. After buying the hardcover, I invested the money to buy the electronic version from ImpactAML as well as the EDD Desk Reference eBook. The eBook format provides a wonderfully efficient search tool that allows index cross-referencing, word searches, as well as allowing highlighting and annotation of text with the electronic equivalent of sticky notes. This book will be useful on at least a daily basis for those in the BSA/AML field, but even for someone just looking to learn about financial crimes and how the financial industry is involved with detection and reporting, this is an excellent book to add to your professional library.
