There's a lot of good detail info in this book on the Schwinn 'cruisers

There's a lot of good detail info in this book on the Schwinn 'cruisers, from the mid-30's into the '70s. That is what I bought this book for. I have several negative comments on the book: a number of reviews ask why no color photos? I agree. A large part of what makes a 'classic' Schwinn are the vibrant colors and the chrome. When my copy was printed, the pressman was running too much water on the plate, many of the pages are washed out. Now I have a bone to pick with the author. Mr. Love emphasizes throughout the book that the only classic Schwinns are cantilever frame balloon tire models with maximum chrome. Your childhood bike that you just recovered from Grandpa's barn, with the painted rims, no fender light, no tank, no luggage rack, you know, the plain old bike that your dad had to make payments on? That's not a classic. From 1938 to 1988, Schwinn made some of the finest lightweight racing and touring models, comparable to anything else in the world, the Schwinn Paramount. In Mr. Love's book on 'classic' Schwinns, the Paramount gets a paragraph dismissing it as a Lightweight with a plain straight-tube diamond frame. Not a classic. No mention of the thousands of racing victories and championships won by racers on the Paramount. No mention of how each Paramount was hand-built by a small crew, separate from the main production in the Chicago plant, using the finest materials and craftsmanship. OK, rant over. The point is, ALL Chicago made Schwinns are survivors, they are still covered by the BEST warranty in the industry, and they are ALL classics.

Nice book

This is a nice book if you are interested in Schwinn bikes. Being new to the hobby, we wanted to read as much about Schwinn bikes as we could. There seems to be plenty of information on most of the models and variations. Lots of photos, but I kept asking myself why they weren't in color. That would have earned a 5-star review. A good addition to the bike library nonetheless.

One of the better Schwinn books, but does not cover it all

I love Schwinns, and was looking for a good Schwinn book to read while my wife watched reality shows. While this book does go over many different models, it does not cover them all. What it has is very good, but a chronological list of all Schwinn models would have been a great addition.

I did like the section of serial numbers. Really spelled out how to find the year your Schwinn was made.

Overall a good book, that could have been great if it just covered a little more

Advanced Techniques, Simplified.

The Preparatory Manual of Narcotics: Vol. 1 is a must have for anyone interested in the chemistry of amphetamines and amphetamine like drugs. While this book is written in a manner similar to a laboratory procedures notebook; each and every procedure is written clearly so that even a novice can understand. In addition, a chemistry tutorial section is provided to give a novice chemist the knowledge needed to sucessfully carryout each reaction. One of my personal favorite aspects of this how-to manual, is the fact that there are multiple procedures for each pharmaceutic. This allows a researcher multiple routes to each product. In addition, the book covers intermediates as well as their synthesis, in the event that a particual reagent is unavailable, and no substitution is readily accessable. Starting chemicals (i.e. pseudoephedrine) are also covered in their very own sections, with procedures for its purification from cold medicine, extraction of ephedrine from ephedra, and other ephedrine containing plants, substitutions (methadrine), and lastly the complete synthesis of starting ingredients from scratch. A very well researched book, containing updated information, and procedures that rank far above any "recipe" found in other worthless "Drug Cookbooks", that would contain outdated information, inaccurancies, and flawed procedures. If you want reliable information on the subject of pharmaceutical (cladestine) chemistry, look no-further!

About the Author
Clea A. McNeely, DrPH is an adjunct professor with the Center for Adolescent Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the social contexts of adolescent health, with particular emphasis on schools and families. She uses social network measures and methods to explore how the social structure of schools influences adolescent health risk behaviors and mental health. Dr. McNeely also carries out community-based participatory research and evaluation focused on implementing and evaluating strategies to ensure the health of young people as they transition to adulthood. Dr. McNeely is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee and previously held a faculty position in the University of Minnesota, School of Medicine. She has consulted extensively for the World Health Organization and UNICEF on developing surveys to monitor adolescent health across cultures. Dr. McNeely received her doctorate from the UCLA School of Public Health and completed postdoctoral training in population studies at the RAND Corporation.

Jayne Blanchard is a Communications Specialist at the Center for Adolescent Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has decades of experience in writing and designing publications, not only for the Center, but also for such entities as the Veterans Administration, the League for People with Disabilities, Catholic Charities, and Educate, Inc. Ms. Blanchard is a published writer in regional and national publications, including the Washington Post, Psychology Today, Washington Times, Style magazine, USA Today, and Cosmopolitan magazine. She is interested in new technology, and provides content and design to the Center s website, Google pages, and upcoming social networking site.

Must Read for Anyone Raising or Working With Teens

This is a great book. I'm using it with middle school students and parents to help them understand each other. The book is written in plain English and is easily accessible. It explains why teenagers behave the way they do in terms of brain development making it easier to understand adolescent behavior rather than judge it. It also gives suggestions for dealing with all aspects of adolescent growth and development. While it's science based (written by folks at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) it's not overly technical. It pairs scientific research with practical applications in a user-friendly manner, including lots of pictures and resources. The Teen Years Explained emphasizes that no two teenage brains or bodies develop at the same rate and that there is no "one size fits" all solution for dealing with the teen years.

This is a great book. It's available online in what seems to be its entirety. You can find it at [...] but in case amazon reviews don't allow links you can google the title and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and you'll find it. It seems well researched, well laid out, and accessible. I'm considering using it for a intro college level course I teach.

The Teen Years Explained is a fascinating and practical resource for anyone involved with teens--as well as for many teens themselves. In layman's language and rich with visuals that enhance the text, the book is well-designed for easy navigation and quick referencing of specific, practical information. But it's also an engaging read from cover to cover that provides a fascinating overview of adolescent development (drawing from some 200 sources listed at the back of the book). Included also is a lengthy list of useful websites for follow-up info. Addressing a number of topics relating to the biology, psychology, culture, and sociology of teen development, this book will serve us and our 13-year-old son for several years. We intend to promote it to the several teen-centered organizations in our community as well.

Like the author's film, Running in High Heels, the book surveys American women's (paltry) accomplishments in the political arena and goes on to make provocative arguments about why we don't have equal representation in our government--a step on the path toward economic power. From media-generated distractions (perfectionism in one's looks and one's household) to women undermining women (in junior high school and academia), Breschard presents compelling ideas in a very accessible volume.

Wherever you stand and whether you agree or disagree with the author, the book gives much food for thought and discussion of women's not-changing-fast-enough role in claiming power for ourselves.

A delightfully witty argument about issues that hold women back, interestingly enough it's not "the man". If women make up over 50% of the population--where's the carry over in the world of politics & business? Her answers & observations to that question are quite surprising. Yes, it was written before Sarah's book came out, but the point of the book is a rebuttal to Sarah Palin's platform, itself. It is not meant to rebut her book, but her politics, viewpoints, and "bass ackwards" finger-pointing.

Overall, a good read for those of you with crazed Palin-loving friends, who need some talking points during awkward dinner table conversations.
