This book teaches psychotherapists how to apply the Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS). The DNMS is an ego state therapy designed to treat a wide range of clients, symptoms, and issues. This includes clients with complex trauma wounds, such as those inflicted by verbal, physical, and sexual abuse; and clients with attachment wounds, such as those inflicted by parental rejection, neglect, and enmeshment. The DNMS is based on the assumption that the degree to which developmental needs were not adequately met is the degree to which a client is stuck in childhood. It starts by guiding clients to establish three internal Resources: a Nurturing Adult Self, a Protective Adult Self, and a Spiritual Core Self. Together these Resources gently help wounded child ego states get unstuck from the past by meeting their unmet developmental needs, helping them process through painful emotions, and by establishing an emotional bond. Alternating bilateral stimulation (made popular by EMDR) is applied at key points in the process. The DNMS focuses special attention on healing maladaptive introjects (ego states that mimic abusive, neglectful, or dysfunctional caregivers). Since these wounded ego states cause the most trouble for clients, their healing results in a significant benefit. As introjects heal, clients report unwanted behaviors, beliefs, and emotions diminish. This book provides DNMS background material, including a discussion of ego state theory and the practical application of ego state therapy. It outlines detailed protocol steps for establishing Resources, selecting maladaptive introjects for processing, and meeting developmental needs. The final chapter is devoted to handling processing complications and blocks. The appendix provides practice worksheets and forms and many other supportive materials. (Drawings in the book are in grayscale, not color.)

OUTSTANDING TREATMENT PROGRAM

During the 78 years of my life I have devoted 52 years to the practice of psychotherapy. Down through these years I've had the wonderful personal experience of knowing and being trained by Carl Rogers, Eric Berne, Fritz Pearls, John and Helen Watkins, Mary and Bob Goulding, and Milton Erickson, to name a few. I'm highly impressed with the way this book incorporates the evolution of ego state theory and trance work into the practice of psychotherapy in such a simplistic way that the average layperson can understand and benefit from this treatment approach. I'm simply overwhelmed by Schmidt's skill in integrating these theories of giants into an outstanding treatment program.

Also available from the DNMS INSTITUTE (additional cost) are seven CD slide show modules for home study by therapists wanting to learn more about the DNMS treatment approach for treating childhood trauma wounding. These CDs are excellent training tools for learning more about ego state psychotherapy and are essential for neophytes as well as experienced therapists wanting to learn more about treating complex maladaptive introjects. Schmidt and other DNMS trained therapist's dedication to providing on-line (email) clinical support for CD owners are to be commended for their efforts.

As a DNSM patient, I would say that DNSM ...

As a DNSM patient, I would say that DNSM is not a therapy technique a layman could understand, much less use on their own. In therapy with a DNMS therapist, every thing in the session is scripted and the therapist must find and read the script verbatim for each twist and turn as the session progresses.
This therapy is highly effective but I can not, in any way, imagine being able to use any of the concepts or techniques gleaned from a book or even experienced as a patient, on myself. I really think that would be an impossible feat. DNMS is really a therapy method to be used by a DNMS trained therapist.
I have a depth of knowledge and experience in psychology (not a therapist) but I find what takes place in each session never really touches this body of knowledge. This therapy is a whole new way of getting to the heart of the issues of missed early developmental steps, the emotional injury they have caused and healing them as the therapist taps into an ego state, works through it's very convoluted "story" and goes on to the next one, and the next and the next.
Even with all my knowledge, what happens in sessions is a huge mystery to me. Trying to understand the concepts of the maladaptive interject and the other "little ones" that show up is very difficult and slippery. To me, the concepts it's based in, in reality, are very difficult to grasp. The simplistic cartoon explanations seem quite straight forward but when you get into the work, they represent very deep, unexpected or difficult key ideas or states of mind.
So if you're looking for a self-help book with techniques that you can use on yourself, DNMS is not one of them. If you're undergoing DNMS therapy...the book may make some sense to you. It's not the fault of the author, it's the very unique nature of this revolutionary therapy. The book tries to explain in simple terms a therapy that is uniquely different from all other therapies that have come before it.

Son virtudes que acompañan a Rafael desde su temprana infancia, allá en su pueblo natal, El Tambo, luego en el Popayán de sus amores, en la Cordillera de Los Andes y en el Litoral Pacífico, escenarios mágicos de los cuales emergen las inquietudes artísticas y su sensibilidad que marcan una perseverante y firme personalidad. Tobar, desde muy temprano demostró tener una mente independiente y curiosa para asombrarse de lo que le rodeaba. A los seis años descubrió sus habilidades para dibujar. Se emocionaba al ver cómo las imágenes que observaba iban quedando en el papel con la plasticidad que inspiraba su amado terruño. Aprendió con su padre el arte de la fotografía y en su adolescencia alternó su tiempo en el estudio de distintas expresiones artísticas y técnicas. En 1965 emigró a Los Estados Unidos. En los años setenta incursionó con otros entusiastas en la música electrónica. Tobar es conocido y recordado por muchos en Colombia. Sus primeros años, su juventud y adolescencia y una corta etapa de su madurez, transcurrieron en Popayán donde hizo sus estudios y donde dejó honda huella entre sus relacionados y amigos por la brillantez de su mente y las demostraciones de sus talentos naturales, como artista dibujante y como músico; y por su creatividad en las variadas actividades a que se dedicó. Reside en los Estados Unidos, en donde desarrolla sus aptitudes artísticas en el area del diseño gráfico.

Know the dentist, bought the book

We know the main contributor and use his services for our 500 horses. Each horse owner should know how to remedy simple problems and when to call the dentist. Several of our horses were pronounced "dying, no matter what you do" by the University Large Animal Clinic, but attention to their teeth saved each of them. Solely on the strength of the contributor we strongly recommend this manual to all horse owners.

Excellent practical reference

This book gives a great practical foundation for horse floating in a vet practice. The illustrations provide a very thorough guide to various pathologic dental conditions and their remedies. Equipment is also discussed in detail. If you can only afford one book on equine dentistry, I would recommend this one. Best on the "How-To's".

I can't say enough about this book, it has enlightened me. It's out of print I think, b/c it was hard for me to get my hands on one, but the effort was well worth it!

Brilliant!

Dr. Newberger has uncovered a startling oversight in regard to conflict and peacemaking: we have somehow overlooked the model of reconciliation God himself has given and illustrated for us in Christ. If there was ever a need for Christlikeness, it is in how we pursue peace and reconciliation. Love is the key, Christ is the model, and Dr. Newberger is our guide in exploring fascinating and immediately applicable discoveries to the healing of conflicts every church experiences. While church after church stumbles along in destructive and painful conflict, ignoring or misapplying the Scriptures to their situation, the solution has been right under our nose the whole time: making peace with others the way God makes peace with us. Brilliant!

The biblical way of peacemaking

Conflict in the church, while almost inevitable, does not have to mean a hopeless struggle that results in a Pyrrhic victory for one side or the other. There is a biblical way to resolve conflict that honors both God and his church. Ken Newberger's book does an admirable job of setting forth the biblical way of peacemaking. Here is a clear exposition of what the Bible teaches on this crucial issue, illuminated by much research and years of experience in conflict resolution. It is thoroughly biblical, eminently practical, and certainly needed in the church today.

This book could save your marriage!

This is a fantastic book. Dr. Newberger has made the leap from lessons formed in the fundamental laws in Judeo-Christian religion to today's contemporary conflicts. He outlines a general approach to all conflicts be they between countries, neighbors, coworkers, family members or spouses. Dr. Newberger builds on the basic precepts in biblical law and then effortlessly applies these lessons. He is a master storyteller, incorporating examples of conflicts from recent headlines right into his methodology. My wife and I find his approach unique in that it builds upon spirituality as a key tenet when understanding and resolving conflict. We have applied Dr. Newberger's approach to conflicts within our own family and marriage and have seen fantastic results, especially in how connected we feel when we forgive and make peace. This book is essential for all Ph.D counselors and social work counselors who counsel those in conflict.

Rare book from a master teacher

In this first decade of the 21st Century, we live in an age of instant gratification. It is no longer an arduous process to acquire the knowledge that for centuries was passed down from guru to disciple under the strictest conditions of qualification and testing on both sides. Today, spiritual seekers everywhere are confounded by so many options that it is difficult to focus on a single path and easy to avoid making a commitment. For many, going to see the latest" enlightened teacher" has become nothing more than a sophisticated form of entertainment. Some seekers even come to question the fundamental principles of the spiritual path, so that it is common nowadays to hear questions such as "Do I really need a guru?" "Do I need to make any effort?" or "Why should practice be necessary when I am already the Self?"

The book by Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, called "Master Key to Self Realization," which has recently been published for the first time outside of India, is a world away from all of this confusion. It is that rarity of rarities, a book that actually delivers what is promised by its title. It is in actual fact the master key to Self realization. However, you must understand that what you are holding in your hands when you pick up this book is a KEY. From one point of view it is all that you need, but, from another point of view, it is only a means. You yourself must take the key and open the door of the house, enter it, and take possesion of it.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj wrote this book in the complete absence of doubt that came from his own realization. In addition to this, his statements are supported by an absolute confidence in the long tradition of realized Masters to which he belonged. He never had any need to doubt the validity of that tradition or to question its fundamental assumptions. He built on the foundation of understanding that had been passed onto him by his Master, Sri Bhausaheb Maharaj, making new discoveries of his own, but never swerving from the path of devotion to his guru.

The Master Key is not merely a book of knowledge. It is a practical book that contains the method for going beyond both knowledge and ignorance. The method taught in this book is meditation on, and enquiry into, the four bodies of the human being: gross, subtle, causal, and great-causal. It is in this sense a textbook of "Laya Yoga," "laya" meaning the merging of the illusory individual self into the all-pervasive universal Self.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj began his spiritual search by practicing meditation, but later came to the conclusion that the way of understanding and Self-enquiry (jnana yoga) was a quicker way. However, the practice of meditation remains an important part of his teaching, because meditation is necessary to quieten the restless waters of the mind, which is an essential stage on the journey of Self discovery. Beyond that level of contemplation through meditation (to use his own words), where all remedies recommended by the scriptures are only hindrances, you will see for yourself how you reach the highest point.

I highly recommend this book to all seekers who wish to gain a true understanding of themselves, rather than a superficial understanding through concepts.

I liked hurting girls.
Mentally, not physically, I never hit a girl in my life. Well, once. But that was a mistake. I'll tell you about it later. The thing is, I got off on it. I really enjoyed it.
It's like when you hear serial killers say they feel no regret, no remorse for all the people they killed. I was like that. Loved it. I didn't care how long it took either, because I was in no hurry. I'd wait until they were totally in love with me. Till the big saucer eyes were looking at me. I loved the shock on their faces. Then the glaze as they tried to hide how much I was hurting them. And it was legal. I think I killed a few of them. Their souls, I mean. It was their souls I was after. I know I came close a couple of times. But don't worry, I got my comeuppance. That's why I'm telling you this. Justice was done. Balance has been restored. The same thing happened to me, only worse. Worse because it happened to me. I feel purged now, you see. Cleansed. I've been punished, so it's okay to talk about it all. At least that's how it seems to me. I carried the guilt of my crimes around with me for years after I stopped drinking. I couldn't even look at a girl, much less believe I deserved to converse with one. Or maybe I was just afraid that they'd see through me. Either way, after getting into Alcoholics Anonymous, I didn't even kiss a girl for five years. Seriously. Not so much as holding hands.
I meant business.
I think I always knew deep down I had a drinking problem. I just never got around to admitting it. I drank purely for effect. But then, as far as I was concerned, wasn't everyone doing the same thing? I started to realize something was wrong when I began to get beaten up. My mouth always got me into trouble, of course. I'd go up to the biggest guy in the place and look up his nostrils and call him a faggot. And then when he'd head-butt me, I'd say, "Call that a headbutt?" So the guy would do it again harder. The second time I'd have less to say. One of my "victims" stuck my head on an electric cooker ring. In Limerick. Stab City. I was lucky to get out of that house alive. He'd done it, though, because I'd been taking the pith out of hiths listhp. Maybe that's why I moved on to girls. More sophisticated, doncha know. And girls wouldn't beat me up. They'd just stare at me in disbelief and shock.
Their eyes, you see.
All the pretense and rules dissolved away. There was just the two of us and the pain. All those intimate moments, every little sigh, those gentle touches, the lovemaking, the confidences, the orgasms, the attempted orgasms-all mere fuel. The deeper in they were, the more beautiful they looked when the moment came.
And I lived for the moment. I was working freelance in advertising all through this period in London. As an art director. A contradiction in terms if ever there was one. It's what I still do today. Strangely, I was always able to get money. Even in art school, I got a grant because my dad had just retired and I suddenly became eligible. And after that I got job after job without too much trouble.
I never looked like a drunk, I just was one, and anyway in those days advertising was a far more boozy affair than it is today. Because I was freelance, I could be my own man, so to speak, and I would keep myself busy by ensuring I had dates lined up. None of the girls were supposed to know this. The idea was to have an impressive queue so that when one girl neared maturity-usually after about three or four dates with some phone calls in between-another would be introduced. Then as one went onto the scrap heap, a new one would take her place. Nothing unusual about my method, everyone did it. But I enjoyed it so much. Not the sex or even the conquest, but the causing of pain.
It was after my crazy night with Pen (more on that in a minute) that I realized I had found my niche in life. Somehow I was able to lure these creatures into my lair. Half the time I was trying to push them away, but it had just the opposite effect. And the fact that they were attracted to a piece of shit like me made me hate them even more than if they'd laughed in my face and walked away. As for looks? I'm nothing special, but I'm told I have beautiful eyes. Eyes from which nothing but truth could possibly seep.
They say the sea is actually black and that it merely reflects the blue sky above. So it was with me. I allowed you to admire yourself in my eyes. I provided a service. I listened
and listened and listened. You stored yourself in me.
Nothing had ever felt so right to me. If I'm honest, even today I miss hurting. I'm not cured of it, but I don't set out to systematically dismantle like I used to. I don't miss the booze half as much. Oh, to hurt again. Since those heady days I heard an adage that seems to apply here: "Hurt people hurt people."
I see now that I was in pain and wanted others to feel it, too. This was my way of communicating. I'd meet the women the first night and get the obligatory phone number and then after another couple of days, making them sweat a little, I'd call and be all nervous. They loved that. I'd ask them out and pretend I hardly ever did "this kind of thing" and say that I hadn't been out a lot in London because I didn't really know the scene. This was true, though, because all I used to do was get out of my head in local bars around Camberwell.
We'd agree to meet somewhere. I liked Greenwich, with the river and the boats and of course the pubs. And it had a great boyfriend/girlfriend feel. Nice and respectable. I'd be half out of it before we even met, but I'd be witty and charming and boyish and shaking. Trying to put me at ease, they'd smile and comment on my trembling, thinking I was nervous to create a good impression. Because I wasn't getting in enough booze, my very being would shudder. I'd have to order two large Jamesons at the counter for her every half lager. I'd down the Jimmys without her seeing and then on with the show.
Lovely.
I didn't really care if I got them into bed or not. I just wanted some company while I got pissed, while I waited for the courage to hurt to well up in me. And they seemed pleased because I wasn't trying to grope them. Sometimes I would. But mostly I'd be fairly well behaved. This would go on for a few dates. In the meantime I would encourage them to tell me about themselves.
This is very important for the successful moment later. The more they confided and invested in you, the deeper the shock and the more satisfying the moment at the end. So, I'd be told of their dog's habits, their teddy bear's names, their father's moods, their mother's fears. Did I like kids? How many brothers and sisters did I have? A sitcom I had to sit through. But it was okay, because I knew I'd be writing her out of the series.
She'd talk and talk and talk, and I'd nod. Raise a strategic eyebrow. Grimace when necessary. Guffaw or feign shock, whatever was required. I'd watch people in conversation and record their facial expressions. Interest: Raise one eyebrow and raise or lower the other depending on the conversation.
Attraction: Try to blush. Not easy, this (thoughts of what I was going to do to her later helped). And a blush usually begot a blush. That is, if I could muster a blush, she was more than likely to blush back. Sympathy: Crinkle the forehead and nod gently. Charmed: Cock your head to one side and smile apologetically. I'd supply these prefab masks on cue. It was easy. It was enjoyable. Guys did it all the time to get laid. I did it to get even. Unkind to Womankind. That was my mission. Around this time I discovered the meaning of the word "misogynist." I remember thinking it hilarious that it had "Miss" as a prefix.
All I know is, I felt better when I saw someone else in pain. But of course they would often hide how much I had hurt them. Yes, it was a challenge in itself to help her externalize her feelings, but also bloody frustrating to have gone to all that trouble and then not be able to enjoy a dramatic playback. That's why it became necessary to condense everything into the one demonstrative moment.
Sophie was from South London. She used to do the wardrobe for Angus Brady on the comedy show Aren't You Glad to See Me? I met her at a Camberwell College of Arts party that I had crashed. After her, there was that designer girl-whose name I honestly can't remember-who I'm sure I hurt very deeply because she never called me back. Funny that, because even though I never met her again or even heard her say another word, I knew she had it bad.
How do I know?
I know.
There was Jenny. She was the one who threw the beer in my face. I was thrilled to have had a hand in causing so much rage.
Then came Emily. But she doesn't really count because she was as good if not better at whatever this is than I was. I kind of fell for her. Laura was somewhere in there. An ex- band publicist with a superb arse that had survived a young daughter. I woke up one morning and there was an eight-year-old girl watching as I tried to extricate myself from the freckled tentacles of her comatose mother. And then after she guilted me into walking her to school, I got the feeling that mother and daughter made full use of the men that passed through their lives. Like the Native American and the Buffalo, The Eskimo and the Seal, The Welfare Mother and Me.
And the one who started it all.
Penelope Arlington. I'd been going out with her for four and a half years. Long time. She'd been nice to me. Nicer to me than any other girl had ever been. When I spoke, she turned her head toward me and seemed to abandon herself to the meaning of my words. I liked that. It was only much later that I found out she was terrible in bed. At the time I thought she was wanton. She wasn't. But she's the one I regret hurting the most. Why? Because she didn't deserve it. Not that the others did, but she wouldn't have left me if I hadn't ripped her apart. And I needed her to leave me because she was getting in the way of my drinking.
And one night I just cracked up. It'd been bubbling for ages. Simmer, simmer, bubble, stew . . . gurgle. I got completely fizzingly drunk and this whole chain of events began to rattle. Why would anyone set out to break the heart of someone he loved? Why would anyone intentionally cause that kind of pain?
Why did people kill each other?
Because they enjoyed it. Was it really that simple? To achieve a soul-shattering, it is better if the perpetrator has been through the same experience. Hurt people hurt people more skillfully. An expert heartbreaker knows the effect of each incision. The blade slips in barely noticed, the pain and the apology delivered at the same time.

Absolutely beautiful. No words can explain how beautiful and horrible it was at the same time. It took you into the mind of a broken heart looking for revenge, even while getting played at the same time. Recommended to anyone who's got time to just sit and read about love, hate, rage, and everyday problems:)

This book had my attention from the first paragraph until the end. Riveting and exciting, I want to read it over and over again. I never found a dull moment. To anyone who likes reading books that keep you hooked from start to finish, I definitely recommend it. I just wish there was more.

Joe Abbin is the owner of Roadrunner Engineering and the Motorhead Mart in Albuquerque, NM. Roadrunner Engineering specializes in consulting for high performance automotive engines, including the flathead Ford. The Motorhead Mart specializes in flathead Ford related publications. He is also a partner in Albuquerque Dyno Services, an engine test facility. Joe has a Masters degree in mechanical engineering and is a registered professional engineer in NM. He has over fifty years of practical, hands-on, automotive experience. Joe is the owner and driver of the Motorhead Mart Special, a well-known blown flathead powered nostalgia racer in the Southwest. He authored his first flathead book, Blown Flathead in 1998. This was followed by 335 HP Flathead Ford V-8 Performance Handbook in 2009 and Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilder's Guide in 2014. In 2008 Joe was inducted into the New Mexico Hot Rod Hall of Fame.

Best most up to date performance Flathead book on the market

Great job Joe. Just about all of the flathead books currently on the market are helpful, but there is usually not a lot of really new information based on the current parts on the market.

I especially liked the way you set out specific parts to build the best possible combinations without a lot of wasted time or money. Taking the time to show the actual test results is a huge help as it shows newcomers the potential of these great old engines.

We will be recommending your latest book to all of our flathead customers.

If you are interested in building a high performance or racing Ford Flathead engine, this book belongs in your reference material collection.

Entertaining and instructive!

This book is a follow up to the authors first book on flathead engines, now out of publication. In 335 HP Flathead Ford Performance Handbook, he demonstrates the methods and components necessary to wring more torque and horsepower from the venerable V-8, along with theory and some history. Using actual data compiled from dyno pulls of customers engines, he demonstrates what works and what alternatives are available. This book covers applications that can be used on the street, strip, and salt. And he backs up his approach by using his own race car as a rolling test bed. I recommend the book to anyone building or restoring a flathead engine, Ford or otherwise, for increased performance and reliability. The photos and graphs, presented in this new, larger format, will help you determine how to get the "most bang for your buck" without over doing it. It dispels the myths and confirms the tried and true, but previously undocumented, ways to soup up the "flatty" with a budget sensability to let you determine where to spend the bucks and where to economize. And there are some pretty cool shots to get ideas for the right look. Check it out....
