My Flame series, which was originally called a trilogy, has been split into two duologies since there are now four books and the third begins a separate story set two centuries later than the preceding ones, which doesn't depend on having read either of them. Readers who disagree with the controversial view of healthcare expressed in Stewards of the Flame, or who want more science fiction action, often like it better -- yet no one wants to begin with a book labeled Number 3. So now the Hidden Flame duology consists of Book One, Stewards of the Flame and Book Two, Promise of the Flame, while the Rising Flame duology consists of Book One, Defender of the Flame and Book Two, Herald of the Flame. Please note that unlike my earlier novels, these two duologies were never issued as Young Adult books and they are not appropriate for readers below high school age.

Not for everyone

I don't like writing negative reviews but I had very mixed feelings about this book and it might actually be dangerous for some people, so treat it with caution.

On the positive side, the author has a smooth writing style, and the last 200 pages or so have a skillful and action-packed plot. I cared about what happened to the characters and there were a lot of surprise twists.

But the first part of the book is extremely didactic, with many pages where characters don't converse so much as give long lectures to the main character. It is reminiscent of parts of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged in that sense, even if not completely Randian in philosophy, so a reader's tolerance for that type of writing will affect his or her enjoyment of the book.

Also, in a lot of ways the main character is being inducted into a cult - a loving group of people, led by a saintly and infallible and mostly behind-the-scenes leader, who isolate the main character and teach him the "Truth." The characters also give away all their money to further the purposes of the group, among other things. Some of the cult-like aspects are played down as the novel goes on, and the author is at pains to emphasize "don't try this at home" with the rituals, but it was still mostly treated in an admiring way, which was disturbing.

And the philosophy being taught is quite controversial. The book takes a very libertarian view towards medicine and is highly skeptical of conventional medical treatment. What I personally found objectionable was the idea that pharmaceuticals to treat mental illness cause "brain damage" and people should go off their meds. Yes, people may be over medicated today, but this advice could be very dangerous for some people. There's also the related, romantic idea that mentally ill people should be given absolute freedom unless they are actively a danger to others. But American social experiments with this have shown that it frequently results in homelessness and/or prison, which is arguably worse than group homes, etc.

The author does warn us of the danger of a heavy-handed marriage between the state and the medical establishment, but the book is not for everyone, in terms of its suggested alternative.

I recommend this book, I love the concept of taking health care, making it mandatory, and then enforcing or forcing people to maintain their health, which is monitored constantly via a big brother computer.
The rest of the story is terrific, but that premise alone really caught my interest.

A veteran storyteller returns with new seriousness

This novel is very different from Sylvia Engdahl's previous novels, which were, somewhat misleadingly, marketed as young adult fiction. yet fans of the earlier works, especially the Children of the Star trilogy, will find some commonalities. In both fictional universes, a man finds himself seemingly alone facing an unjust system. Unlike the trilogy, though, in STEWARDS the system is not revealed to be a benign oligarchy doing what it has to do in order to save mankind, but a malignant surveillance society intent on controlling people and depriving life of its spontaneity and hope by enforcing a state of mandatory 'health' on all people. Jesse Sanders, threatened with being another passive victim of this monitoring regime, becomes determined to resist this evil by any means possible.

STEWARDS also joins the earlier trilogy in seeing space colonization as humanity's only hope, although just what `space colonization' consists of is defined far more elliptically in the current novel, and in seeing ritual as an important way to strive towards this hope.

Readers may have certain procedural issues with the book: the love of Jesse and Carla seems to flower too early (although revelations about Carla's past later somewhat explain this), female minor characters like Kira and Michelle sometimes seem interchangeable, the crucial Zeb subplot is introduced without adequate preparation, and the character of Ian is under-sketched. This is important as ian is a crucial precedent and inspiration for Peter, the compassionate, self-abnegating leader of the group, dedicated to the paranormal, that Jesse, joins after he realizes the totalitarian nature of those who control the planet Undine. If certain expository sections had been trimmed, there would have been more room to fully develop these characters' identity and motivaton.

But these lapses are more than made up for by Engdahl's unmatched ability to combine intellectual speculation, moral forthrightness, and narrative suspense. The book does not require the reader to assume Engdahl's own positions on certain aspects of contemporary life; though the author makes clear her stands, the reader can enjoy the book as narrative without adopting them. And the end is both exciting and searingly moving. Readers who enjoy the more adult works of Robert A. Heinlein or C. S. Lewis should enjoy this novel, though its atmosphere is more stark and bitter than either. The novel is eminently readable, indeed hard to put down.

Fans of the earlier books, perhaps themselves grown older, will enjoy this new Engdahl novel in a different way; it also has the potential to bring this undervalued author the wide reading public her talent merits.

About the Author
Tony Seahorn: Following his tour of duty in Vietnam and subsequent physical therapy and recovery from combat wounds, Tony was informed by the Army that permanent nerve damage to his arm and shoulder would not allow him to pursue his dreams as a career aviator. After discharge from the service, Tony made a career in management with AT&T where he was able to complete his college education and went on to get an MBA. Recently retired; he and his wife Janet started their own Education Consulting and Outdoor Adventure business. Their travels take them far and wide. Following encouragement from family & friends, his most honored medals from combat are now displayed in a shadow box in their home. Some of which include two (2) Bronze Stars for heroism, two (2) Purple Hearts, Air Medal, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross, and Presidential Unit Citation. When not traveling and writing, Tony spends much of his time training two overly enthusiastic black lab retrievers, Chase & Hunter Bailey. From one who has PTSD

After completing an in-patient PTSD treatment program at the Tomah Wisconsin VA Hospital in 1995, I have made a study of the subject. I can honestly say that Tears of A Warrior doesn't miss a single aspect of Post Traumatic Stress. I wish I had had this book for my wife and family (I am second eldest of eleven) long ago to help them better understand me. There is nothing simple about this very complicated condition and yet Janet makes it easy to understand. This book is a complete guide and anyone who reads it will quickly identify themselves or their vet in the material presented. While not all of it will pertain to every individual, the context for coping is the same. Finally a book with answers! It is a must read for anyone confused about the behavior of someone with PTSD.

Extremly well written and helpful.
The self-described war -time experiences of the authors husband put one in the proper frame of mind to absorb the vast amount of info on the subject of PTSD that is unobtainable elsewhere, even with the Veterans Administration and Veterans groups.

I have been able to understand why my husband has reacted the way he has to many things after reading their story. Once you live with a vet you begin to believe their behavior must be normal, then you understand its really not. It has helped us talk about the things he does and the way he feels.

If you are interested in a precise and clearly written guide to learning or deepening your understanding of the craft of writing this is the book for you. It is an accessible and complete how to guide for a novice or an expert. Her book is full of anecdotes and excercises to help any writer solve any problem encountered in writing at any level. Take her book's lessons to heart, and you'll hear her clear voice, focused and compassionate asking questions, which if answered with disciplined intention lead to the appropriate answer. Moore's tone is supportive and respectful throughout this remarkable read. It's a sure footed guide through the wilderness of learning how to write well. Without this book I wouldn't have been able to write the rough draft of the novel that sits in my lap.

About the Author
After working for a leading clothing company, Michael Belk channeled his experience and fashion knowledge along with his passion for photography into a successful advertising boutique. For more than 30 years, he created images for many of the leading names in fashion. His work appeared in publications that included Vogue, GQ and Vanity Fair. Along the way, Michael began hearing God ask, What are you doing with all that I gave you? Are you using it only for yourself or are you sharing it with others? I just finished reading this exceptional depiction of Jesus, His short life and His ongoing struggle to wake us up to the fact that He loves us and that only He can save us from ourselves, our sin and the world.

Believer or not, this is a must read for anyone that is interested in learning about God. If you search for Jesus you will find Him.
