Peyton. “The Wildman” was the ultimate underdog. A racer in a high stakes games with no bankroll, R. L. would beg, borrow or Gerry rig whatever he needed to race. He became the hands down crowd favorite at every track because they knew the Wildman would blow up, crash or set a new track record every time he got in the car. Before drag racing was legal and there was anything like the NHRA, Wildman was blowing the hoods off Mustangs in souped-up Studebakers on the swampy back roads of Dade County. In the early 60’s there was already a full blown drug subculture in South Florida and the same men that dealt bails of pot and kilos of coke had access to “hot” Chrysler hemis. Wildman ran with the outlaws because he had to get a fix for his racing habit. When the sudden explosion of creative energy in the 60’s began blowing the doors off music, writing, art and political institutions, R. L. was challenging everything about mechanics, automobiles and racing. These two brothers shared every car they built together, every race, every wreck, every cheap motel and every set of beautiful twins the met. R.L. and Hap came up against county sheriffs and city cops, race officials and the other drivers and a limited income. Nothing could stop them. But unlike a lot of geniuses who were driven to excellence and pushed the envelope, Wildman earned the respect and admiration of everyone. Race officials could only marvel at the way he could get more horsepower out of a car and still not break the rules. Wildman was the Jimmy Hendrix of drag racing and he broke all the barriers. When he finally got a sponsor with enough cast to buy all the right tools for the job, Wildman became one of the first men to officially break 200 mph in a dragster. He did the unthinkable: he was the first man to build the longest dragster in the world and move the engine up. His list of accomplishments and breakthroughs is huge and throughout it all, he had one companion, his little brother, Hap. This is their story.

An Underappreciated Rebel with a Cause

Wildman is a rollicking tale about a guy who actually did exist, and who revolutionized the sport of drag racing during his brief time in the spotlight. Facing off against the likes of "Big Daddy" Don Garlitz, "TV Tommy Ivo" and others of their ilk, R. L. Peyton created his own legend, as a fearless drag-racer, a major innovator and a creative scavenger, while leaving a trail of women and fans in his wake. His little brother, Harrison "Hap" Peyton, was there growing up around most of it, and he's chronicled the adventures in this engaging book, which is literally "soon to be a movie," now itself in the process of promotion and sponsorship. Hap brings his personal experience and years of car-building to produce a fascinating look into the wild world of competitive drag racing, revealing the highs and lows of his brother's crazy career in the process.

This book is the greatest! Stevie Rey is a talented author. The Hillbilly Bible is a humorous, yet comforting, rendition of the Book of John. Once you begin to read, you won't be able to put the book down until you have finished it - cover to cover! This would make a wonderful gift for anyone from teens to the elderly, men or women. Anything that causes me to rethink my basic assertions about the nature of God and man is a significant write. The narrative forces you to rethink what is being said in the Gospel of John, even if you are a scholar on the subject. Interestingly enough, it's also an easy read for the first-timer as well.

In the study of western art, the influence of artist's clubs, groups, associations, and organizations is often overlooked and under appreciated. Founded in 1906, the National Arts Club (located on the south side of New York's Gramercy Park) showcased the paintings and sculptures of its members during the late nineteenth and early- to mid-twentieth century. "A Legacy Of Art" is an illustrated catalog providing a kind of tour of the collection, along with biographical information and anecdotal stories for some of the more notable of the club members. Featuring a letter from the club's board of directors, a list of abbreviations, and a roster of 'Artist Life Members of the National Club: Painter and Sculpture Class', readers are treated next to an informed and informative introduction by Carol Lowrey, a 'Catalogue of Selected Paintings and Sculptures by Artist Life Members' which provides the majority of the illustrated text. Concluding with an appendix (Checklist of Work by Artist Life members, Painter and Sculptor Class) and a selected bibliography, "A Legacy Of Art" admirably serves as an historical overview and survey of this remarkable and enduring institution with each individual artist given his or her dates and places of birth and death, and each painting it's title, medium, dimensions, signature placement, and 'Diploma Presentation' date. A wonderful history of the National Arts Club

This beautifully illustrated book sheds much light on the artists of the early 20th century. The author carefully documented an important collection that is in a prestigious private club -- The National Arts Club -- that did so much to further the career of illustrious artists. Bravo! Excellent and useful text on the NAC and its artists

The attractive and well illustrated book opens with a brief chapter on the history of the NAC and then proceeds with a catalogue of paintings and sculptures by life members of the group. Listed alphabetically by the last name of the artists, each entry consists of a biographical sketch followed by remarks on the art work illustrated from the NAC's permanent collection. The entries are all well documented with separate footnotes so the book is easy to use. The text is followed by a checklist of lesser works in the collection. The reader will find a wide representation of the movements and styles characteristic of turn-of-the-century American art including impressionism, tonalism, and realism, to name the most significant. Subjects include landscape, portraiture, genre scenes, still-life, etc. The strength of this book is that it provides biographical information and intelligent commentary on many somewhat obscure artists of the time, as well as those who are slightly better known or prominent. This book will appeal to anyone who is interested in American art of this period and would like to learn about some of the lesser known figures. I needed it for professional purposes and had to get a copy via ILL from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, so the book seems a little hard to find. Certainly I will be buying my own copy and I encourage others to do likewise.
