Why am I Writing again?
Written by Peter S. Fischer
After nearly three decades of surviving in the television business as a writer
and a producer, I exited stage right in search of a serene life style as I made
my way toward eternity. Serene turned out to be an inappropriate description.
Doldrums is far more accurate so three years ago I dusted off my manual
typewriter (literally) and with some trepidation, tried to put my years of experience
into writing a novel. I had no interest in reviving a television career.TV is a
young person's game. The studio executives and the network poobahs are all
sub-30's and we speak different languages. Besides, writing for television and the
wealth and success it can bestow on you also demands that you give up a
certain measure of intellectual freedom. Again, no interest. Not at my age.
I had a great deal of success in television , most notably with "Murder,
She Wrote" which I co-created. I also ran the show for the first seven years. One of
the things that bothered me most was the fact that the show and its main character
never progressed. Aside from graduating from English teacher to world famous
author in the first season, Jessica Fletcher was the same in the first year as she
was in the seventh. This is a key reason why a television show becomes and remains a hit:
Predictability which translates to audience comfort and huge ratings.
Fiddle with the tried and true at your own peril. I cite Moonlighting and Remington
Steele.
I have two great loves. Murder mystery and historic Hollywood, the so-called
good old days when stars were bigger than life or at least seemed to be. So when
I sat down and rested my fingers on the keyboard I was determined to do something that
would meld my two passions into one entity. Out of this was born "The Hollywood Murder
Mysteries".
My protagonist is untypical. Joe Bernardi is a publicity man who works for a
studio, churning up excitement for the studio's product or, in some cases, trying
to put the lid on some of the less savory activities of the studio's stars. "Love
Has Nothing to Do With It" is the third book in a series of five (so far) and possibly
as many as a dozen .
In Book One Joe is 28, a correspondent for "Stars and Srtripes", and has just returned
from Europe at the end of WWII, to find work and reunite with his wife Lydia whom he
married in a fit of passion in '44 just before he was shipped overseas. Realizing they are
different people now, Lydia divorces him unwilling to try to save the marriage. Joe carries a
torch like a lovesick teenager but at book's end realizes that his dead marriage will never
come back to life.
In Book Three, "Love Has Nothing to Do With It", Lydia finds herself accused of
murdering the philandering theatrical agent she was involved with in Book One.
Meanwhile Joe is living as man and wife with perky, adorable Bunny Lesher and this is as
close to true love as he has ever gotten. But when he tries to help clear
Lydia, it has a devastating effect on Bunny who comes close to total breakdown.
Lydia is exonerated and Bunny is saved from self-destruction but her relationship with Joe will
never be the same as demonstrated in Books Four and Five.
In short, I am arcing story lines from one book to the next as Joe matures and
the circumstances of his life change from year to year. His half-finished novel is
cited in Book One. In Book Four it's finished and in the hands of a publisher but
suddenly he discovers that a screenplay that is a clone of his book is floating around town.
He goes after the plagiarist who ends up dead.
To add to the fun, all of the books (except Book One set in 1947) will have Joe
simultaneously working to publicize a Warner Brothers movie. In 1948 it's
"Treasure of the Sierra Madre"". In 1949 it's "White Heat". In 1950 "The Glass
Menagerie". In all these books I have invented scenes which include the actors, directors and
writers associated with each picture. Joe sharing a beer
with Bogart. Joe helping Cagney umpire a kids baseball game for charity.
Joe juggling three talented actresses each of whom thinks she should win this
year's Oscar. Joe getting writing advice from Tennessee Williams.
This is the kind of thing I could never do with "Murder,She Wrote" but am having the
time of my life doing with "Love Has Nothing to Do With It" and the rest of the books in the
series.
So much for the retirement doldrums.

the psychological aspects were supreme
By AudioBook Reviewer
Some random peoples start killing democrat Congressmen, the police force and the FBI can’t find who is responsible for the killing, and it’s all up to Paul Castle who work as a host of a third rate cable show that deals in sleaze and scandal, the killing motivate Paul with the help of his old girlfriend Jennifer Bovano who is a US Attorney to remember his old life as a real journalist who worked to help society, and uncover the corruption.
And with her help and the help of a homicide detective Aaron Kovacs, and an FBI agent Fowler Briggs who turned from an enemy to an ally, castle tries to uncover the organization behind the killings.
I liked the plot of this book, it was very good, the dialogue was excellent, the psychological aspects were supreme here, each character was unique in its own context and thoughts, yet I didn’t like how the idea of ” The end justifies the means ” was presented in the book as acceptable way of change. Also I felt that the ending wasn’t satisfactory in general.
The narrator was Ernie Sprance, Sparance did great job as a narrator while he gave each character its own voice and accent, we could see the type of personality by the voice and the accent he chose for the character, his reading for the plot lines was just awesome, I just felt each scene happening in front of me, and it really made the story a whole lot better for me.

Well-Crafted Political Thriller
By Nyssa
Congressmen are dying, some in apparent accidents, others killed by what most people would think of as upstanding citizens. Are these deaths related in any way? If so, who is pulling the strings and why?
This book is a combination political thriller and a mystery complete with clues to track down along with the main character, Paul Castle, a former journalist turned TV show host on a small cable network.
There are several subplots going on with Castle's ex-girlfriend who is a US Attorney, Castle's working class family roots, the transition of Castle from a hard-hitting investigative reporter into a host of a lowbrow exposé television show, and then back again into a journalist as he tracks down the leads to the Congressional deaths. Good supporting characters include Lt. Kovacs, a seasoned NYPD detective; the ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Bovano; and Murray, the ever-suffering, stressed out TV producer.
Witty dialog, plenty of good guys, a few bad guys, and a mystery. The book even gives some food for thought on federal politics for those who are interested in the Congressional seniority system and how it is structured.
Recommended.

Art Imitates Life to the Letter
By Christina Hamlett
In Peter S. Fischer's political thriller, "The Blood of Tyrants," government is shrinking at a radical rate, though certainly not in ways that will fill Capitol Hill - or maybe even voters themselves - with feelings of unmixed delight. Specifically, a pool of legislators is being systematically assassinated in connection with their support of a controversial bill. The most baffling element, however, is that their killers fit absolutely none of the profiles of anarchists, terrorists or left-wing kooks normally associated with such malevolence. In a nutshell, these are workaday people like you and me who have never registered a single blip on anyone's radar screen, much less racked up any overdue parking tickets. What, then, has driven these mild-mannered citizens - unknown to one another in any context - to suddenly commit murder, cognizant of the consequences it will bring?
As Paul Castle, host of a third-rate cable show, starts to assemble a smattering of disparate clues, it is not only his reputation on the line but his life - and the lives of those he loves - that is placed in jeopardy by a dangerous adversary. In his younger years, Castle would have been a role tailor-made for Paul Newman and akin to his work in "The Verdict." If cast today, my choice would be William Atherton, who played the slimy reporter Richard Thornburg in the first "Die Hard." Having seen Atherton perform in a local production of "The Glass Menagerie," he would aptly capture the tortured spirit of someone for whom redemption seems an elusive but nevertheless coveted quest.
As in "The Terror of Tyrants," Fischer makes no secret of his concerns about the dangerously Socialist leanings of the current administration, especially in reference to health care legislation and to a "universal ID card" that, while purporting to simplify the lives of carriers by having all of their personal data stored in one place, makes it that much easier for government to identify and eliminate any potential enemies of the government. While Obama supporters will likely decry the plot as the work of a conspiracy theorist, the striking "art imitates life" parallels drawn by Fischer are hard to ignore.
"The Blood of Tyrants" is a topical and compelling wake-up call to encourage the complacent to stop hitting the snooze button - especially the next time they go to the polls. While this book is not intended to resonate with a liberal audience, it will hopefully cause them to at least take a closer look at the man who would be king...and at his elected minions who all too quickly - in the context of greed and personal power - forget the very people who swept them to victory and expected a change they could actually believe in.
