Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition, by Gary F. Zeolla

The Analytical-Literal Translation: Third Edition (ALT3) is the most accurate translation of the New Testament available. Its name reflects its main features. "Literal" refers to ALT3 being a word for word translation. All words in the original Greek text are translated. The original grammar is retained as much as possible. Words added for clarity are bracketed. "Analytical" refers to the detailed "analysis" done on the grammar of the text, which is then translated in a way that brings out "nuances" often missed in other translations. "Analytical" also refers to aids included within the text which enable the reader to "analyze" and understand the text. ALT3 is based on the most up-to-date and accurate Greek Text, the Byzantine Majority Text: Second Edition.

A very useful tool
By Searching for what the Bible actually says
I am very happy with not only the New Testament, but the Companion. The Companion is a very valuable explanation of not only the strengths and weaknesses of the various manuscripts, but is an excellent primer on Greek grammar.

If there is a fourth edition, I'd like to see two changes. First, I think it'd be worth paying an extra couple of dollars for a slightly smaller format. The author explains that, since publishing prices are determined by total number of pages, he attempts to keep the cost down by using a physically large page. His work is so good in my opinion, that I'd have no problem paying more for it in a handier size.

Second, he uses a symbolic system (underlining, etc) to show a difference between terms for which there is no simple difference in English. For instance, Greek has a different second and third person plural concept for "you". Unless we revert to being Southerners and add "y'all" to proper English, the two languages would not translate well from one to another. I like his scheme a lot. In a future edition, I'd like to see it applied to the word "love", so that the reader would know which type is being talked about in a given passage without having to look it up.

Other than minor personal tweaks such as these, I'm thoroughly happy with the edition.

Just what I was looking for, Excellent Majority Text Translation
By Benjamin J.
Textual criticism is a highly debated topic among people, and probably always will be until Christ comes back. I am not interested in this review about arguing for which textual theory is accurate, but to rather talk about the labor and value in the Analytical-Literal Translation 3rd Edition. Thank you Gary Zeolla for putting in the work to do this, it is much valued and appreciated by me.

This translation is based off of the second edition of the Byzantine Majority Greek Text. It is one of the only ones available and is a very unique translation, as it has aids within the translation that really help one understand the text. I am not an expert in Greek, so this is really a time saver and help for me and others who would like to dig deeper in the scriptures while working on learning more Greek. If you hold to the Majority Text textual criticism viewpoint, and are looking for a translation to help you, this is the one. I plan on using it side to side with my Majority Text Greek New Testament that I have, but also reading it for devotional and study use. I would recommend it both for the scholar and the non-scholar.

Obviously when you translate from a more complex language like Greek to English, it is difficult to show everything that the Greek text is saying. This is wonderfully done in this translation however, as the author will do things like [bracket] words for clarity, has proper analytical notes, and helps in areas like understanding whether or not you is plural or singular to give a few examples. I currently use the NKJV and KJV translations, and for me, this is a great New Testament translation to go deeper into the Word of God.

Here is an example of the text from Matthew 6:7-10:
7"Now when you* pray, do not use vain repetitions [or, many meaningless words] like the Gentiles, for they suppose that they will be heard by their many words. 8Therefore, you* shall not be like them, for your* Father knows what [things] you* have need of before you* ask Him. 9Therefore, you*, be praying like this: Our Father, the [One] in the heavens, let Your name be regarded as holy.

The best way that I can explain this translation, is that it is the perfect bridge between a translation like the NKJV and the Greek text. So if you would like to dig deeper into God's Word, or would like to be able to read without having to look up things in bible dictionaries, this translation is for you. It is worth the value, whether you hold to the Majority Text view or not, and if you do agree with the Majority Text view, it is the best purchase you could make. It is as the name says, both literal and an analytical translation.

Thanks to the author,
In Christ,
Benjamin

I LOVE words but the Expression of {Divine} Logic
By Jonathan D Goodwin
John 1:1
In [the] beginning was the Word [fig., the Expression of {Divine} Logic], and the Word was with [fig., in communion with] God, and the Word was God [fig., was as to His essence Deity].

I LOVE words but the Expression of {Divine} Logic; is GREAT and I don't know why they changed it to the Word!

There are of course other words, phrases and sometimes whole verses in which the Analytical-Literal Translation expresses the intended (I think!) meanings and clarifies as well as illuminates and expands upon the standard apparent meaning(s) derived from the the Byzantine Majority Text and that's why I love this book. I've been reading a chapter a night and I'm up to John 4.

Now I could rate this a 4.5 because it's not perfect but it is outstanding and I wish to encourage anyone who is considering purchasing this to do so if they are interested. The minor negatives are:

when >heyou< is implied by the original text but not actually written they're indicated by an * which is okay by itself but gets a bit unwieldy and confusing when it is also included with other explanations such as the example above and mixed in with defining weights & measures, times or distance and such. They could have made one of them a different color or, more frugally, just changed the font or put it in bold. It's a small matter and I got used to mostly but it could have been done just a little bit clear visually.

It's wonderful to read the words of Jesus and the apostles in the more natural flow of the ALT (Analytical-Literal Translation) and causes me to wonder why they chose the voice(s) they did when rendering the KJV. The KJV is of course still useful even for the NT but I've found the A-L Translation to be much more useful and likely accurate. Of course I can't vouch for that since I read only English...or American. :)

On the recommendation of another reviewer I also ordered The New Testament An Expanded Translation by Kenneth Wuest (I'm sorry I didn't jot down her name--I think she's a she--before I started this review) and find that book to be useful because it reads aloud in a more flowing manner that the KJV also. My only difference in regards to her recommendation is that if I/you can only get one I prefer the ALT of the New Testament by Gary F. Zeolla simply because it is, as far as possible, an exact, word for word translation which helps me understand the intentions of the original authors. Highly recommended to get both and I'd like to thank the reviewer who recommended the Wuest version in the first place.

If you're interested in this I believe you'll enjoy it as well as gain a broader and deeper understand of the Bible and therefore I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering it.
