Review
Barbara League reminds us of the passion and dedication of missionaries around the world. Rich in history and culture, Letters to Lori is a testament to the faith that moves mountains through the life of Opal Myers. - Pamela Guerrieri; Literary Judge (ECPA, Christy Awards, RWA)
From the Author
I have several books "in the works" and hopefully will publish my next one soon. However, no matter how many books I write, I doubt any will be as great as this one - at least not to me. Why? First of all, Letters to Lori is a true story about an amazing woman. Even now, after so many years, I am still inspired and even get emotional when I read portions of the book. I am overcome by the great love the mission workers had for their students and the community. A love that changed the lives of those they touched; some more than others, like Opal. Secondly, Letters to Lori challenges me to "Go and do likewise" (Luke 10:25-37) - to make a difference for eternity. And last, it gives me hope. God demonstrated His great love by sending workers to an impoverished back-mountain area. I know He can do the same for the desperate lives of those in the Covington inner-city.
From the Back Cover
A Heartwarming Tale of Passion, Sacrifice, and EnduranceAward winning Letters to Lori shares the true story of a courageous woman's struggle for change in a proud, close-knit community. Opal Myers, who assisted Catherine Marshall in her research for her best-selling novel Christy, describes her passion and sacrifice for the people of remote Cocke County, TN. As Opal recounts the sacrifice attached to her quest, she breaks our hearts as she surrenders all to God amidst severe trials. A war-torn husband. A battle to feed hungry mouths. Despite all odds, Opal keeps her dream - God's dream - alive to bring hope to her resistant community and a dying mission.
In this beautifully scripted letter to her granddaughter Lori, mission worker Opal Myers leafs through the pages of her family's history, and exposes the struggle of a mission striving for acceptance in a reluctant back-mountain community. Packed with her adventures as a one-room school teacher fighting poverty, as well as humorous anecdotes of the area s memorable characters, the story reflects Opal's humor and great love for her people, the mission, and its workers who changed her life.
When Ebenezer Mission closed, Opal single-handedly resurrected the mission to keep her promise to herself and God. As an inspiration to hold fast to your dreams, this book will challenge you to make a difference in the lives of those you love. Share in the laughter, tears, and legacy of her mark on history.

A True Testimonial to Miss Opal
By Grandfather Jay
Having read and enjoyed Catherine Marshall's Christy, based on the adventures of her mother Leonora as a Smoky Mountain missionary, I was eager to seek out the truth behind the fiction. Barbara League has produced a true gem in so doing in 'Letters to Lori'. In the real world "Cutter Gap," the focus of the battles against ignorance and want shift from "Christy" and the Presbyterians to young Opal Corn. Herself a graduate of the mission school, "Miss Opal" dedicates her life to the betterment of all in the cove, especially the children. Here is the story-against-odds of Opal soldiering on after the Presbyterians pull out (nearly allowing the church-schoolhouse to become a saloon), and after the public schools close the doors on her beloved building.
It is told largely in Opal's own words, in letters to her granddaughter. It has been said that Miss Opal logged more miles in her lifetime on foot serving the mountain community than most circuit-riders on horseback. School teacher, Sunday School teacher and Bible Study leader, caretaker of the sick, sex educator (with the Bible her guide), physician, agriculturist, horticulturist, botanist, host to many wayfaring strangers, wife, and mother. You will learn that Miss Opal was all that and more. You'll read of her hardships in caring for a sick husband and four kids while leaving before sun-up & returning after sundown (on foot) to teach at the public school seven miles away. You'll read of her triumphs in the accomplishments of her students and in keeping the community together after the outside world abandoned them.
Today, you may attend the holiday public dinners held in the cove, now hosted by Miss Opal's son Larry Myers. But to appreciate what's behind it all, you need to get to know Opal Corn Myers. And, thanks to Barbara League, you can do that via 'Letters to Lori.' I HIGHLY recommend this book to all Christy fans who want "Something More," as Catherine Marshall might say. I highly recommend it to all who would appreciate a true look at a neglected portion of REAL America through the letters of one who lived to better it with her life.

Inspirational and Great Family History
By Donna Gunter
I bought Letters to Lori because I have family members who were taught by "Miss Opal." Not only did the book deliver, but it was life changing for me. Miss Opal's life was God centered, and though she paid a price for her devotion, purpose, and direction, what she received in return was worth far more than she gave. I do not exaggerate if I say that Miss Opal was the Mother Teresa of the old 15th District of Cocke County. The book can be enjoyed from many perspectives:
1) Family History: If you have family from the area, she surely wrote about them. She gave details about my great-grandmother that I would never have known. I will always be grateful to her for preserving her memory.
2) Life Lessons: Miss Opal is a compelling corrective to contemporary versions of Christianity that are ambiguous in requirement in the name of postmodernity.
3) History: Miss Opal tells some chilling stories about her family in the Civil War.
Letters to Lori has something for most people, if not everyone. If you read the book, you will be changed.

A journey through the life of Opal Myers
By Heather Lanza
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Letter's to Lori. It took me on a journey through the life of Opal Myers from the time she was a child and followed her as she grew up and became a teacher to those in need. As I read this book I felt like I was there experiencing her life right beside side her. I learned of the struggles and heartaches she had to face but how those struggles turned her into a strong woman of faith who didn't let trials get in her way.
I had the pleasure and great honor of knowing Opal Myers when I was a child, and this book brought back the memories of warm summer days sitting on her porch snapping green beans or watching her ring the Sunday bell to let everyone know it was time for church.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is an educational and heart-warming story of a woman who never gave up and was determined to help everyone that came across her path. This is a book you don't want to miss.
