Fantastic food and photos!

This book has the prime spot in my kitchen. The recipes are easy, healthy and produce beautiful dishes. The care and loving of the food prepared at this retreat center comes through in this excellent book. I also love the history of the community and the photos of the retreat center...it all adds up to five stars!

Formerly a graphic artist and web designer, Randall began full-time EVP Research in 2006, which resulted in his first book on the subject - Voices From Forever. Since then, he has devoted his time primarily to the subject of EVP, and as a paranormal investigator with a team of experienced researchers. Randall was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Penn State University where he graduated with a BFA in Film and Television. After a brief stay in Los Angeles, he returned to Baltimore to pursue his graphics career. He still resides there. and is the father of six children and several grandchildren.

What's it all about, Randalllllllllll...

Firstly, let me say that, for a self-published book, the content was most acceptable as far as the quality of the writing. Punctuation was appropriate and ideas were well expressed. I mention this because that is so often not the case. My problem with this book, aside from the fact that I now own it, is that the description could have been more clearly and accurately stated.
If you are interested in EVP and looking for information regarding discoveries into the nature of the phenomena based on this persons research, as I was, then you are in for a huge disappointment. The description should read "One mans musings and personal philosophical speculation on many varied life topics based on his experience in gathering EVP". That would have told me that I wasn't interested.
I read the first three chapters fully and then read the last page of all the other chapters to see if the ramblings were being replaced with more specific EVP related information. They were not. So, be clear as to what this book is about.

Excellent book on EVP and the paranormal in general

This book is thoughtful and well-written. Mr. Keller's approach is intellectual as well as spiritual. I am currently reading his second book,
"There is no Silence", because this first one was so good.
He continually questions everything about the experience, but at the same time this does not keep him from going forward in his research and
experiments. I find myself reading questions he puts forth that would be the same exact questions I'd be asking.
He's got a webpage [...] where he's posted all of his EVPs, as well as various Podcasts of his. Check it out if you have any doubts about his sincerity or the research itself.
This is one of the very best books on the paranormal I've ever read.... and I've been reading them for about 45 years now. His second book seems
just as good.

This the first book of its kind to suggest that a comprehensive and systematic approach to the subject is worthwhile. It is useful to go to the author's website to sample some of the EVP items. Randy is funny, insightful, and very thought provoking about a very serious dimension of the paranormal. Of course the ordinary world will probably ignore this author's excellent probing questions--but the groundwork has been established--and just what are those voices from another dimension? Entities originally from earth but also from other spheres of existence.

More Than a Print Version of the Free Comic

The author admonishes you, in his foreword, that you must have some kind of poor economic judgement, to be buying this book when the comic is free online.

But that does more to illustrate the kind of wit he has, than represent the truth, because the book is NOT a print-out of the pics you can get online, but is apparently based on the original, pen/pencil drawings (at least in part), giving you a (faint) insight into the process of their creation, plus giving a feeling of something authentic, like buying a cell from some favorite animation.

If you have NOT read the comic online, the domain name is XKCD (as you can infer from the name), go read it. If you'd have liked the book anyway, you'll be back to buy it out of sheer joy for the sarcky satire you've experienced.

Who will like XKCD?

* Anyone who likes Big Bang Theory. This is the one source of "nerd/geek" humor superior to that one.

A must have for fans

This doesn't give you any new comics, but it does have a lulzy introduction that makes fun of you (the reader) for buying a printed version of a free webcomic. Still, if you're a fan of the series it's a must have just for the showcasing reasons alone. Also, whenever I want to introduce somebody to the GLORY that is XKCD, I can now say "here, browse through this!" instead of giving them a web address they'll likely never go to. Also, if you've never bought anything from the XKCD store but have been reading the comic for years (like me), this is your chance to give Randall some money finally!

Daria is in love with romance and thank God for it! She writes her tale of love, life's struggles, and dreams. To read such a wonderful novel in today s world of cynics, it is truly a breath of fresh air. This story is a refreshing theme in our present society. It reminds me of those great films of the 1930s with Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson or even Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. We need more romance in all our lives and Daria seems to live this in her writings! If this is her very first book, she will have a wonderful career as a writer promoting good old American values that made this country great. To begin, the heroine, Madeline Rose, is an engaging character. She deals with the same issues most real women deal with at some point or other during the course of an average American, middle class, family oriented, and traditional life. I myself, though from a blue-collar background rather than an upper middle class family like Maddy s, have been exposed to many of the same situations portrayed in the novel, albeit second hand, through the eyes of my sister, who dealt with the same sort of dating woes as Maddy, before she married in 1990. These issues, (being stood up by selfish men, insecurity on the dating scene, and worries about weight and self esteem) are portrayed in a realistic manner by DiGiovanni. The Rose family reminds me of my own; the novel is set in Southeastern ennsylvania, near my neck of the WaterSignswoods, as well as the Jersey Shore, Philly, and Florida. I loved reading about the family dynamic similar to mine, with Italian food, sisters who share bedrooms, parents who love and protect their children, (sometimes a little too much), and aunts who love to gamble in Atlantic City. Madeline s Down Syndrome brother and her battle with anxiety were additional themes that spoke to me. I imagine thousands of other women will relate to Maddy in some way or other; her story is of the American girl next door, only deeper. Cliques, cattiness and backstabbing women are not to be found in Maddy s world. What we find are love, laughter, family, hard work, professionalism, beautiful clothes, and pop music. The hero, Ken, Maddy s true love, comes across as very down to earth, and a bit insecure about his blue-collar roots and upbringing in a Jersey Shore town. The couple s sweet beginning turns sour after a series of misunderstandings, missed chances, and over-thinking of average situations. Initially, I was sad. I wanted Maddy and Ken to get married within two years of their initial meeting, have a family, and live happily ever after. But...this was not to be, and that s what makes the story. The separate courses these individuals take, their experiences, (good and bad), and the relationships they nurture with their own families and new friends along the way, make for an exciting ending to this charming novel. Ken and Maddy spend long years living separate lives, making their own choices, building careers, and yearning for each other throughout; the happy ending is worth waiting for. --Author Daniella Bova

Daria Anne DiGiovanni has captured the essence of the Jersey shore (as most people experience it). And her depiction of an individual supported by an extended loving family--yet still struggling to find her own way within that structure--is quite remarkable in this day and age.

Book of love and HOPE

Daria is such a brilliant writer that you actually feel like you are living the story with the main character. I was so engrossed in this book, that there were times I had forgotten that I was sitting in my bedroom! This book is an excellent escape from one's daily routine. I was always a slow reader, but let me tell you, I read through this book so fast, I even surprised myself!

Never did I ever feel like I could relate to a character as much as I could relate to this one. I could not believe how much Madeline's life paralleled mine. It kept me wanting to read on. I can count AT LEAST five similar situations that the character and myself have been through.. It blew me away.

In addition, ANYONE suffering from panic/anxiety disorder or knows someone who is, MUST read this book. It will give you reassurance that this is only a temporary condition that will go away. You will lead a normal life again.

Not only will this book give you a sense of hope that true love does exist, it also proves that certain "bumps" that one goes through in life, are only temporary and will pass. Upon completion of this book, I had feelings of warmth, peace and hope, stir within me.

There is a light at the end of each dismal tunnel.

This is A MUST READ!!!..Any novel I had read after "Water Signs", pales in comparison to this book. I am definitely looking forward to any future novels from this author.

Now I understand the contemporary dating scene!

As a mature woman, wife, mother and grandma, I remember the stories my grown daughters would share with me about the difficulties of dating in the modern world. Having brought them up with a solid moral foundation, it was still hard for me to truly understand what it was like to find decent men out there.

Reading Water Signs really opened my eyes to the realities of the contemporary dating scene, and the challenges facing young, traditionally minded women. Madeline's journey is an inspiration to all females who have encountered less-than-honorable men on the way to finding Mr. Right. This character sometimes stumbles and falls, but she always holds onto the values with which she was raised -- not an easy feat in today's society.

Ken Lockheart is an example of true modern hero, a US Navy vet who loves his country and desires more than anything to marry a good woman and raise a family. He's a refreshing tribute to real honor, courage and integrity. Though he definitely has his faults, it would be nice if there were more men like him in modern society.

I highly recommend this wonderful novel to any parent who would like a better understanding of what their kids encounter as they try to function in the current dating world.

This Book is not only good reading, but it is informative. The book is nothing like I thought it would be. I thought that it would have been just an analytical book, but instead it reads like some of the other autobiographies out on the market today. I would recommend this book for your library. The book is more about a African (Black) Americans male's quest for a relationship with God.

The Path Many Have Traveled And Have Yet To Talk About

I must commend the author on sharing the story of a journey that many of us have traveled and continue to travel but often not talked about. During highschool and entering college beginning a spritual journey of exploration and awakening. Challenging the accepted religion given to many of us as kids and how it left us with many spiritual questions and feeling disconnected from our African roots. Exploring African systems and how we often get caught up in the romanticicsm and mysticism of African systems and miss the practicality of the systems. Then at some point you find the balance betweeen having a spiritual connection to the Creator, connecting to your culture and being able to have a sprituality that works in your everyday life. The author gives you a transperant view of his journey with all the obstacles and turns. I commend his honesty, the kind of honesty that will transform the lives of many.

This book caused me to reflect on my ever evolving spiritual journey. I could identify strongly with the author's Pentecostal roots and the backlash of thinking outside of that paradigm. Reading this book provided intellectual stimulation while walking one through a difficult journey of a African American man finding his spiritual purpose. I recommend this book, and I look forward to read more of this author's work.

Good Book but read it slowly

This is a very hard book to grasp if you are having the problems that are in it. I read it and now have to re-read it again. The truth can hurt and there is alot of truth in this book.

I would also recommend having a therapist or someone who can talk to you and help you with it.

If you want to create fulfilling relationships, this book is a MUST

This book should be required reading for anyone wanting to have an intimate relationship.

Dick Schwartz unveils the underlying reasons why intimate relationships so often fail and gives concrete suggestions what we can do to remedy them. As suggested by other reviewers, read this book slowly... if you're in pain from a challenging relationship this book will uncover a lot, and each page is a gold mine. I have had the good fortune of working with dedicated IFS therapists and am so amazed at how quickly they are able to connect with the deep-rooted parts of my psyche and quickly undo the suffering those parts have amassed over the years they were submerged.

I have benefited from the Internal Family Ssystems because they complement my therapy and help me remove sad memories and blockages in my path to greater happiness. Being able to hold the book in my hands and read the paragraphs again and again has helped to go deeper inside me and to understand how therapy works.

A memoir by Robert Peter Thompson

What affect does war and combat have on our young warriors? Does the average citizen really know? Do they ever really think about it? Perhaps they don't want to,
yet we as a nation send them off. This book is my self-published memoir of life as a 19 year old Marine in 1969 Vietnam. Yes, it is harsh in part but also inspiring and even replete with the kind of humor you will find nowhere else. It is also 'beautiful'. Hard to believe when you read the forward I created for my book. Still, we should know. We should try to understand. It is true and we should show respect and care for those who have walked this path.

I wrote the following as the forward for my book. Not because I thought it was clever or witty or deep. But because it is TRUE. I wrote it for all those who have witnessed war and reaped its bitter fruit. Also the sweetness of real love born under the most trying of circumstances during all the wars and from any time period. You will also be introduced to "LINA" and "the most beautiful girl in the world".

Some things remain the same:

'"But not everything is remembered and not everything is told. Lost with those who did not survive and with those who did not return. Lost in the chaos and confusion and the self protective suppression of the formidable and yet fragile mind. Sometimes that which affects you most is that which you can no longer see and is perhaps better left alone. But what of that which so stubbornly remains and cries out as it does from the darkness of time and says;

"I am here, I am still here, you will look at me, for I will never go away."'

No book is for everybody and this one was not written to be so. I was acutely aware of the potential criticism of what could be described as "run-on sentences". However, their presence in this book was an intentional device, to create within the reader a sort of `breathlessness' and to place the reader in the experience as lived by the story's teller. I also wrote it for myself. I began writing poetry when I was an 18 year old Marine in Southeast Asia. When I returned I dabbled in song writing. My writing style reflects that. If you want "only the facts mam" then choose another book.

As for the changing cadence in my writing, imagine yourself sitting on a barstool in a Legion or VFW saloon. The guy sitting next to you, who you have never known to talk about his personal experiences as a young Marine in Vietnam, inexplicably begins to tell his tale - 40 years after returning from war. It is not clear what has triggered this. However, as the narrator weaves in and out throughout his recalling of particular events, some more intense than others, he rushes along sometimes apparently not stopping to take a breath. One becomes tense just listening to this. That is the device I tried to achieve.
It may not work for everyone and I readily accept that. Still, this book was not written to exhibit the author's grammatical correctness, but quite the contrary, in the voice of a 19-year-old Marine, to give a sense of `realism' and conjure in the reader tensions, emotions and yes, a sort of breathless exhaustion somewhat equivalent to that of the story teller. The actual veteran (myself) who lived it.

My interest in writing this book was not simply to create a "narrative" of events and of course, not all the events I experienced are included. I attempted to weave a story based on my personal experiences that as a sum of its parts, creates an effect upon the reader: What was it like? What did they feel? What thoughts coursed through their minds when all around them life was falling into utter chaos. What did they feel afterward? What didn't they feel? This book is not meant to simply convey the most troubling thoughts and experiences, but to allow the reader to 'feel' what happens within the mind, heart and soul of a young man (or woman) as he is 'altered' by events.  How he responds to loss. That is why my book is dedicated to "Sandy". Get to know him as I did. Maybe just a little. Perhaps you will take something home from this book as I did from living it.

About the Author
   Robert Peter Thompson is a former Marine (1967-1969) with a family of four who has worked as a Quality Assurance Analyst, Sr., for a large national company for over 30 years.

   During the 1980's and 1990's he wrote extensively on matters relating to his research of the POW/MIA issue, particularly in regard to satellite imagery of alleged POW distress signals photographed over North Vietnam in 1992. He was published in a full-page article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper by the editor of "NEWS WITH A VIEW" in 1994.

   He subsequently was published in the Editorial Section of the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 1995 with a portion of his 53 page analysis of POW distress signals imagery entitled: "'DISSECTING A LIE & The Case For The Life Of U.S. Air Force Major Peter Richard Matthes "GX 2527"' by Robert P. Thompson." (13 type written pages and 40 photo copy pages of FOIA acquired distress signal documents from the Defense Dept). Analysis was drawn from, among other venues, the 1223 page "Senate Select Committee Report on POW/MIA Affairs" dated January 13, 1993.

   Many incidents resulted from the exposure of this issue: Written attacks from government bureaucrats and hang-up day and night phone calls. Proudest of Mr. Thompson's efforts was being personally called and subsequently published by the heroic late Colonel Ted Guy who published Mr. Thompson's analysis on his own web site. Another treasured moment was when Mr. Thompson was personally called by another heroic returned POW; Captain "Red" McDaniels, who told Mr. Thompson: "You have proven the existence of 'living' POWs". Unfortunately, the defense dept and the government bureaucracy took another view.

   This book: "EVERYTTHING HAPPENED IN VIETNAM: THE YEAR OF THE RAT" is Mr. Thompson's first work relating to his own experiences as an 18 and 19 year old Marine in Okinawa and then the Republic of South Vietnam.

A Tour in Vietnam

A friend of mine in the Army told me that everyone owed two years to their country and Vietnam was the dirty end of the stick. He just wanted to do his tour and go home and be a pipefitter. All he wanted was a simple, normal life. He didn't make it. Thompson's book is about people like my friend. It's about friendships that become a part of your heart, fear that sears your soul and simple bravery that makes you proud of young men willing to give service to their country. Thompson lets you meet these young men and learn to know and love them as he did.

As a Vietnam veteran, I avoid books about Vietnam, but I read Everything Happened in Vietnam-The Year of the Rat on a recommendation. This memoir is a tour in Vietnam like it was: difficult, fear-filled, deep friendships, confusion, anger, humorous, sadness, grief and horror. It easily can stand beside such memoirs as Robert Graves' Good Bye to All That. Students of history will find this book engrossing as a personal account of the average guy's experience in war. Students of Vietnam will experience a virtual reality tour in Nam through Thompson. His description of action is so realistic, so emotionally compelling that you live Thompson's tour. Yet, he does not blame the system, the government or the military for his tour. He simply allows you to enter 1960s Vietnam in a way that will change your opinion of those who lived it. You also find out why it was his "Year of the Rat."

Real history: raw and unvarnished...

In "Everything Happened in Vietnam: The Year of the Rat", Robert Peter Thompson has given us a glimpse of what the war looked like through his eyes. It is very authentic. This book reads much like sitting and hearing Mr. Thompson tell his story. The stream of consciousness style lends itself well to the confusion of war. His conversational writing is pleasant. It's like sitting in a bar and listening to an old friend relate his memories. At times, I became a little lost but I'd keep reading. Then I'd say to myself,"That was well done!" I especially liked the little updates at end of some of the chapters.

I enjoyed this book. It's good to find more Vietnam veterans telling their personal stories. Our history is made up of millions of regular people. Real history isn't made by famous generals and presidents. It's made of regular people like Mr. Thompson. Too often, nobody knows about it except the people who were next to them. This book very clearly shows the struggles to mentally survive the war. I'm sure it was cathartic for Mr. Thompson to tell us his story. I thank him for sharing it with all of us.

One year in real life...

After the years of analysis, explanations and excuses from scholars, ex-generals, and politicos, we're finally beginning to hear from the men who actually fought the war in Vietnam. Mr. Thompson has given us an up-close look at the inside of the war, from the bunkers to the hill-tops. His vivid imagery and stream of consciousness style unite to bring the moments of terror and wonder to life. As a Vietnam veteran of combat myself, I salute him for his honesty and observation. Everything and anything did happen in Vietnam, and it really was a lifetime compressed into one year.
This book should be of great interest to anyone interested in the war in Vietnam or military history in general.
