This second book from Knox, a young New York poet, continues the playful romp through the warped Americana she began in her debut, A Gringo Like Me. Here, Knox gives voice to wayward teens, drug-addled sages and fat dogs fantasizing about killing babies—among other unsavory characters—through dramatic monologues and quick narrative sketches. There are many rats, guns, genitals, fried foods and drugs, too, along the way, and Knox catalogues them all in a breezy voice suited to barrooms and club stages, echoing standup comedy and performance art. Even a rigorous pantoum called 59 Tenets About Meat sounds casual (I am totally freaking out). Reminiscent at times of a comic book Bukowski—Apparently, all those margaritas and cocaine / have saddled me with a profound bout of diarrhea—a pervasive, sentimental fascination with the down-and-out lurks behind Knox's layers of irony and comic distance. Elsewhere, she self-consciously toys with her own image in poems like Ideal Reader for Jennifer L. Knox. She's at her best and most entertaining in bursts of everyday surrealism—like the poem Pastoral with Internet Porn, which bristles with energy and imagination. This is poetry few would be intimidated by, though it could entertain many. (Mar.)

idiosyncratic; irresistible

Jennifer L. Knox's first book -- the wonderfully quirky "Gringo Like Me" -- was a tough act to follow, but her latest book "Drunk By Noon" comes out with guns blazing.

In "Drunk By Noon," Knox continues her fearless, sly and witty takes on American life, and leaves no bizarre stone unturned. Poetry from the perspective of obese spaniels, cuddles next to poetry comparing Emperor Hiro Hito to Randy Newman, which lounges in shadow of an epic poem called "59 Tenets about Meat." But Knox's singular gift is the grounding humanity she brings to her manic range of topics: no matter how strange or absurd, by the end of the poem, you are ultimately left feeling a shamelessly tender.

This book is highly recommended for anyone who is feeling grumpy towards humanity, or anyone who has forgotten how darkly fun poetry can be.

Absolutely Phenomenal!!!

Tom Haupt's book "Time-Out" is not just a book to read; it is a book to live by. After personally going through many leadership and self-development courses, this book combines everything I've learned into one, easy to read (yet hard to forget) package. From the very first page, I was pulled into his examples and I was also challenged to evaluate my own life (once again). I really enjoyed the fact that this wasn't just a read-only book; it was a hands-on, life changing, reality check. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who needs a challenge in life. It has been a blessing to my life and I KNOW it will be a blessing to yours! :)

Play BIG!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the exercises that it contains to improve my life. The author is an incredible author and coach. The book is written from a coaching perspective. Tom is writing from the perspective of a basketball coach and is using the analogy of how our life is a game just like basketball or football. We are all playing this game called life and we are running the same plays over and over again. Some are serving us well and others are not. Tom explains the importance of taking a Time Out and evaluating our playbook. Taking out the plays that don't serve us and replacing them with more championship plays.

I love this analogy and I have and will continue to apply these principles in my life in order to play a bigger game in Life. For me that started with making life a game! Tom's analogy has truly turned my life into a game that I can plan out my plays, then play the game, then evaluate my game, and adjust my game. This will be a continual cycle of improvement that has already transformed my life and will continue to serve me in playing a bigger game! Tom is a true Life Coach for playing a big game in life!

Thank you Tom for your inspiring book and for the new plays that I am writing in my playbook!!

A "Must Read" For Business Owners

Time-Out! is a no-fuss, get down to it, realistic approach to pushing yourself personally (and professionally) to the next level. Tom systematically walks his reader through exercises of self-discovery that ultimately break down barriers that are holding back potential success. Time outs are essential in every facet of life; however, without careful reflection and conscience choices to shift our own behavior, the time out loses it's benefit. Tom's wisdom will help you utilize your time-out to truly change the course of your "game".

As a small business owner, I have read and applied Tom's teachings to my life and my business. My personal relationships have greatly improved; my clarity in who I am and where I need to be has improved and my business has grown. Within the first thirty days of applying the principles found in this book my business booked $30k in new projects. When I start finding myself resorting to "old plays", I simply pick up the book and start reminding myself of how I need to play in life.

Great

This is the gold standard of translations of the Tai Chi classics. Ben Lo is an accomplished Tai Chi adept, a scholar and one of the most straightforward of men. As a man of some accomplishment, immersion in Classical culture, direct study under Cheng Man-Ching, and decades of teaching experience, he is one of the best positioned and prepared persons on earth to do such a translation. He doesn't disappoint. Put this beside your copy of the Tai Chi Ta Wen and you have the critical parts of a Tai Chi library.

One of the things you hear in Tai Chi is that regardless of the form you practice, it's Tai Chi if it follows the Principles. This book is the chief source for finding the Principles in writing.

I recommend you also get the DVD's of his lectures on the Classics. This edition is the one he uses for the lectures reference.

Unsurpassed, slightly abstract

This is a very careful, very thoughtful, translation of a number of seminal works related to Tai Chi. The works are foundational, and it is not reasonable or possible to argue with the selection of materials or with the quality and precision of the translation. It is the best work that could be done of this type. It would be difficult to see how it could be improved upon. While it is very likely that thorough and prolonged reflection on these works may be indispensable to the practice of any really serious Tai Chi student, I think that the works are too terse and too abstract to be of much use to a beginner just trying to discover the real Tai Chi. The only works I know of that could help a beginner experience the real Tai Chi for him(her)self are Scott Meredith's DVD's and books. I think his DVD's are really very practical. This is scholarly and is probably helpful for those who want to live the whole Tai Chi dream.

Tara Brach, Ph. D., is the author of Radical Acceptance- Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha (Bantam, 2003.) She is founder and senior teacher of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and teaches Buddhist meditation at centers in the United States and Canada. Wise, thoughtful, powerful and practical meditations

This two-CD set includes guided meditations to help you practice the powerful ideas presented in Tara Brach's book on Radical Acceptance. Of the many meditation CDs I've collected over the years, I think this set is my favorite. The tracks are: 1 - Vipassana (Mindfulness Meditation), 2 - The Power of Yes, 3 - Embracing Life with a Smile, 4 - Radical Acceptance of Pain, 5 - Tonglen - Transforming Suffering into Compassion, 5 - Cultivating a Forgiving Heart, 6 - Invoking Loving Presence in the Face of Difficulty (a version of Tonglen), 7 - Coming Home to Natural Presence, and 8 - Realizing Our True Nature: Self-Inquiry.

Wonderful set of meditations

I bought this two-disk set to go along with Tara Brach's Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha book. The book includes meditations for many of the chapters, and, while you don't need to purchase the CD set, I decided to do so since I find Tara's voice to be very soothing and wanted to further reinforce the messages from the book.

As I mentioned in my review of the book, I only recently discovered Tara Brach when a friend from work who knows that I get stressed out easily recommended that I listen to her lectures and free meditations on the Dharma Seed website. I fell in love with Tara's wonderful lectures and approach to life!

On her website, many of the meditations are a bit longer, and I wanted some shorter meditations since I would hopefully find the time to do them if they weren't too long. This CD set is perfect for that.

I also liked the CD option since they're more portable. I imported each disk into iTunes on my laptop, so that it's easier to listen to them in any part of the house. They're a gentle reminder of what I have read.

Here is a breakdown of the times for each meditation:

this is a great CD

This CD is fantastic. I'm not usually into guided meditations but these are great. I must say there are a couple of the 8 or so, that I have not heard, but I assume they would be good based on the others. "The Power of Yes" may sound like a cheesy title, but don't let it throw you off. I listened to it, and proceeded to do a gigantic pile of work I had been avoiding on my table for some time. It is a very thought provoking presentation that can change your point of view about difficult situations, and "un-paralyze" you. The author is a buddhist based teacher, and I do practice buddhist meditation. That being said, they have only a few references based in that frame, and I think anyone from any other, non-buddhist background, could benefit from these meditations. I learned of them from a Christian friend, and he never even mentioned the buddhist factor.

Hey coach, why haven't you bought this book yet?!

Mr. Severn's book is an absolute necessity for every parent and coach of any sport, not just baseball. As a parent, it helps to set expectations of your child so that both of you can enjoy their time with youth sports. As a coach, it is instrumental in reinforcing the message you are trying to instill in the kids you coach - have fun playing with your friends, and the wins will come.

I have used parts from this book as a supplement to when I send emails out to my parents to continuously remind them about why they are providing this exciting opportunity to place sports (on any level). It's about having fun. It's like a daily reminder to them that, "Hey, I don't get paid for this, so we might as well have a good time!"

The quotes that Mr. Severns has been able to get from well known players and coaches from around baseball are great little reminders as well. My personal favorite that Kevin Seitzer gave says, "Don't ever be the coach that makes a kid give up the game."

Teachings are priceless

In a age of high pressure youth sports this book is the critical for balance. I highly recommend this book for parents, coaches, or anyone who is teaching and influencing youth. Bill reminds us of how important and how our influence can make lasting impression on children. I will always remember his teachings on being fearless. This is books speaks to you from someone who has been there and seen how positives and negatives of coaching--the wisdom that is provided is priceless. For any new coaches or seasoned coaches it is a recurring read before each season.

In a world that is focusing so much on winning, we are risking the loss of what sports is really about: the virtues and character it builds. Bill's stories are inspiring and will hit home as they are sure to impact many lives. Personally, I love the AUDIO but have the book too. Coach Lucy DelSarto
