Swallow this? I Devoured It.

I've purchased and perused wine books before. When I read them, I felt like I was cramming for an organics chemistry midterm. But I read them anyway because I had a Charlie Tuna approach to wine -- I hadn't really made up my mind about whether or not wine tasted good; I just wanted to have "good taste." Along those lines, I thought that I was supposed to like _dry_ wine, so it seemed only natural that the books on wine would be dry, too. The drier the book, the more sophisticated I'd appear.

Mark Phillips's book _Swallow This_ changed all that for me. As you can see for yourself with Amazon's "Look Inside" feature, it's a fun read no matter where you crack open the book. Mark anticipated my questions even before I had a chance to ask them.

This book covers everything -- and I do mean everything -- about wine, from grape varieties to corkscrew varieties, from wine stains to wine trivia. The wine glossary is extremely helpful -- but I do wish that the book had an index. This is definitely the Swiss Army knife of wine books.

Subsequently, I found out about his website [...] and his video (_Enjoying Wine With Mark Phillips_, which has been running on PBS stations for a couple of years, though I never saw it there). Thanks to Mark's book, website, and videos, I'm no longer buying expensive wines just because they are expensive or just because they have a "90" point rating. I'm not so enthralled with "good taste" either, because I've learned to appreciate what tastes good.

While I'd still like to develop my palate, I feel much more comfortable with wine now whether I'm putting on some jeans or putting on the Ritz. And when I'm at a party where wine is being served, I don't have to knock back a few to make other people seem interesting [George Jean Nathan]; I can just step right in with Mark's help and _be_ interesting, saying, "Did you know that you can freeze wine ... and that there's even an appropriate time to microwave it?" or "I learned a great method for matching wines to food . . ."

This is such a good book -- I'm sure that I will be buying more copies (in addition to the three books and three videos I've already purchased). After I RSVP, I'll buy and wrap up Mark's book as a gift (for about the same price as a nice bottle of wine) and hand it to the host upon arrival, sure to be an instant hit, thereby making every other bottle of wine the host enjoys that much more enjoyable -- and memorable.

Spectacular

I am not much for words but this book is spectacular. Easy to read and extremely informative -- it will allow you to learn without the stress of reading something that will put you to sleep. Makes drinking wine - more importantly, buying wine - painless and guaranteed successful. Wine is meant to be enjoyed and Mark makes it easy.
Congratulations Mark Phillips, you have a winner.

Bottoms Up!

I'm not a reviewer: I'm a consumer, and a horrendously picky one at that. A marketer who really, really doesn't want to be marketed to. An I-can-take-it-so-for-gods-sake-just-give-it-to-me-straight kinda girl. Just the facts, with a twist of wicked humor, and I'm in heaven. So Mark Phillip's Swallow This hit me like a ton of happy, "where have you been all my life" bricks. It's that refreshing edutainment that most of us had to give up somewhere before the drinking age in most states--all packaged up in a sexy tome that even your mother will love.

Once you stop snickering at the brilliant title (swallow THAT, Wine Spectator) and curl into a chapter or two, you realize quickly that you're probably gonna finish this in one sitting (or hammock swing, in my case), so you might as well pour one. An infectious mix of anecdote, facts, and an unabashed experimentation with wine science, Swallow This will give you the confidence to be, like me, a wine moron and proud of it. No longer am I concerned that I can't discern the vintage of a particular pinot noir or even tell that a bottle's gone bad. In fact, I don't give a rat's patookis. I know what I like, and with Mark's guidance, I am not afraid to experiment and grow my knowledge by intelligently experiencing wine (which, when it gets down to it, is supposed to be about enjoyment, not one-upmanship). Most importantly, I know that no matter what anyone says--and by that I mean EVERYONE, even Mark--I am the final arbiter of what is good. Phew! Now if I could just get him to marry me...

Fly your freak flag and gift every irreverent and free-thinker you know with this book and they will thank you. Probably with a reasonably priced and oh-so-delicious bottle of wine. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

About the Author
Carlespie Mary Alice McKinney is an essayist whose life experiences include witnessing the murder of his mother when he was twelve, rejecting academic scholarships to prestigious colleges after becoming a member of a cult, raising his children in that cult only to be ostracized by them for later rejecting that cult. He eventually returned to school and earned his MBA from Wayne State University and is now a business professor at Oakland Community College in Michigan.

Thought-Provoking & Insightful Book

This book, consisting of a collection of essays on various topics, some pertaining to details of the author's life, and some concerning politics, religion, and the like, made for very good reading. The author is clearly the type of thinking, contemplative person whose observations and opinions would interest me. I appreciate that he took the time to put into writing so many life lessons, what he found in his exhaustive search for truth, and how he processes his life experiences and grows as a person. Although one or two of the essays were a bit more difficult for me to fully grasp, for the most part, the ideas in the book are stated in a clear and understandable way. The fact that it is not written in a dogmatic or agenda-driven manner is refreshing. The author opens up and explains who he is, why he thinks and feels the way he does, and does not appear to be influenced by what is politically correct or widely accepted. I happen to agree with many of his conclusions, but whether or not I agree with him I have to admire his willingness to openly share his thoughts, beliefs and even his personal tragedies in a way that had relevance to me and my life. I plan to keep this book in my collection so that I can refer back to some of the essays, and so that I can read some of other books referenced by the author.

Provocative

Bring your dictionary and your wits with you. This is an enjoyable, if disturbing look at some nearly hallowed preconceptions. One sees through tortured eyes (in some ways the eyes of of a child) points of view that disturb, disect, and completely break down notions long held dear. The book does not spare sacred things like: religion, love, or family.

I enjoyed the fact that the author makes no attempt to persuade, while nearly begging one to think...think another way, and just for a moment. This is thouroughy facilitated by the brevity of each essay. The book allows you to see yourself, see your beliefs in a new light. Read it for all the right reasons.

A wonderful romp through the mind of a free thinker. It ought to be required reading...for college freshmen, or more productively at the high school level.

Truly Thoughtful

We labor under the idea that our education system teaches us to think. In reality we are taught merely to regurgitate as fact the things we are told. Through his essays Mr. McKinney challenges all preconceived notions; asking his readers to just once approach the issue from an unconventional perspective. We find when we do the end result is refreshing, rewarding, and an uplifting of the human spirit. If you value critical thinking this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Esperanza (sometimes called EJ) and her brother Pedro Morales were hanging out at their friend's house. Faith and her brother, Matthew Nelson. EJ and Pedro's father Salvador and Faith and Matthew's mother Barbara really like each other a lot. Salvador wants to see Barbara again unfortunately this match may not work. Barbara and Sal are both Christians but when Barbara tells Sal that she has plans to take her children on Saturday to get the new Harry Potter book, Sal gets upset with Barbara. Sal asks Barbara why she would do that when as Christians the bible warns against pursuing witchcraft and devils. So EJ, Pedro and their dad Sal decide to check out the Harry Potter books to see exactly what they all are about and why their pastor has warned them against reading them.

While driving home the Morales' spot a new family moving into the neighborhood. They stop and introduce themselves. The family has a daughter named Tamela, her brother Adam and her dad Frank Barnet. The Barnet's are Christians too. During one of the visits to the Nelson's, Pedro and EJ are introduced for the first time to a Oujai board. Pedro and EJ decide not to tell their father about it but they do feel awful about trying the Oujai board out. They decide to tell Tammy and Adam about it. Adam and Tammy want to help teach Pedro and EJ about the evils in the world that surround us and how to not be catch up in them.

Tammy and Adam have the gift of faith and helping to spread the word of the Lord. Adam every one in a while feels the Lord directing him to someone in need. Adam, Tammy, Pedro, and EJ follow Adam throughout the neighborhood helping. The group comes across two other kids named Timmy and Chung who want in too. The group decides to call themselves the God Squad. From then on their mission is to help other kids learn about God. Every morning before they head into school they pray around the flagpole but Mr. Dawson, one of the teachers wants to break up this group.

I really enjoyed Mr. Parker's use of the inserting scriptures from the Bible as reference throughout the book. Also, I thought Adam and Tammy were great in the fact that they were teaching the rest of the kids more about God and the word. It goes to show you that it does not matter who you are or what age you can always help by being one of the Lord's shepards. There are plenty of opportunities everywhere to counsel people if you are just willing to take a moment to look and listen. I loved when the children were facing adversities that they never gave up their strong beliefs in God, even when teachers were telling them they could get in trouble for praying or when other kids might think the God Squad was uncool or weird. Don't get me wrong that all Christians are perfect as we aren't but you do have to be open in saying Jesus I have done wrong and I need your help. We all need help as humans, we just need to choose the right ways and places to seek that help. Like the Bible says "He who has not sinned, cast the first stone". I want to thank Mr. Parker for writing these types of books and not being afraid to share the word through them. God Bless.

But when the woman Sal is dating turns out to be an extreme Harry Potter fan, Pedro and EJ convince him to discover the truth for himself by reading the book with them. Thus begins an intriguing journey into the spiritual realm where Pedro and EJ, along with six other friends known as "The God Squad," encounter the reality of good versus evil on the streets of Anywhere, U.S.A.

I absolutely loved this book. A Practical Guide

How I wish I had had a copy of this book when my sister-in-law was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. It would have helped our family so much in the two and a half years before her death. It covers every issue for the one leaving and the ones left behind, including children. Other books cover the emotional and spiritual aspects of dying but this one not only covers that but all the practical details that have to be dealt with as the end of life unfolds. I was filled with great peace while reading it and recommend it for every family library.

This book was practical, to the point and realistic. It did not "beat around the bush", and I will suggest that my parents read it next!
I appreciated the included Bible verses, whic gave so much comfort... after all we should not be afraid to die because through Christ there is such a better place for us in eternity.
The lists of "to do" items are so helpful for those of us left behind!

Unafraid To Die

My grandson is dying of Muscular Dystrophy. He is only 7 years old.
I have searched and searched and searched for words or writings to help the horrible ache in my heart. Thank You, MaryAnn Moore, for writing Unafraid to Die. After reading your thoughtful book, at last I feel a peace within my heart and mind. I have ordered books for my all my children so that they too can find the peace I have found.
