Dings and whacks - spoken like a lawyer?

Whacking the mole is a salty metaphor for what we do to one another, either as individuals or as organizations, when we expect perfection. Whacking can get ugly.

Marx has translated legal and engineering language into a fun read. For this reviewer, what resonates the most is Marx's observation that mole-whacking drives problems underground. He suggests that the way people and systems typically respond to human fallibility could stand some inspection and correction. While predominantly aiming at high-risk environments, like healthcare and airlines, Marx provides examples from many layers of our culture. Draw your own personalized conclusions.

On the contrary side, the flow of the narrative is at times a bit stilted. There also seem to be hidden presuppositions that only the author could adequately illuminate. He didn't.

Should you read it? Does your organization expect perfection? Whack-a-Mole will make you think.

I'd like to read a book about how to implement this philosophy in an organization

At the request of the organization that I work for I attended a seminar dealing with this concept back in 1994. The ideas of fixing systems rather than punishing individuals seemed so right, so palpable. When I returned, extremely excited about these concepts I was met with sneers and jeers. The other day I saw this book sitting on the desk of a safety officer and not knowing what it was about decided to read it. I was a little surprised at the content since our organization is still not there. I do remember taking a company survey several years ago asking if I felt we had a "just culture." I think I said "no." So we lost 19 years because the concept has not been fully implemented. So how do you do that? Government agencies don't get it. Plaintiffs attorneys don't get it. I still think its a great idea. Just wondering how do you do it. ?

On why errors and at-risk behaviour should be treated differently to recklessness

A readable explanation of the value of a just culture both within an organisation and within society more generally.

As such it really does need to be read widely, particular as it makes important points on the reduction of healthcare induced illness and fatalities as well as challenging the gut reactions that occur after a wide range of adverse events (like the current financial crisis, Deepwater Horizon etc).

While the basic theme should be familiar to many safety professionals (though perhaps not as many as there should be) there are some aspects that will be useful even if you are familiar with the just culture concept.

Marx advocates one of three reactions:
1) Console Human Errors
2) Coach At-Risk Behaviour (where a choice has been made that resulted in excessive risk)
3) Punish Reckless Behaviour

Importantly he stresses this should be independent of the outcome that occurred rather than simply shrugging when recklessness fortunately doesn't result in harm (that time). My main niggle is that Marx, though a systems engineer by background, could have emphasised systemic responses to the first two categories more. Also I'm not convinced that Marx has really defined a clear boundary between 2 and 3.

The critique of the Motorcyclist Magazines article 50 Ways To Save Your Life is an effective example of segregating good pro-safety preparations, safe behavioural choices and worthless advice.

There is a lot of powerful discussion on error management in healthcare (200,000 people die in the US alone due to medical errors), but those of us in aviation can't be smug. There is a very effective deconstruction of a laughably poor and counter-productive disciplinary policy from a US airline (though I fear one that many HR professionals would consider state of the art). He also has some very interesting observations on the ASRS scheme in the US which does strongly suggest that the legal approach to aviation error in the US is having an adverse effect of the safety culture.

The discussion on the work of the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation is also interesting, though it would have been interesting to see some safety data comparing NZ with other similar countries.

Wonderful! Beautiful thoughts and words of wisdom and insight

An absolutely wonderful book! Full of fascinating insights into Creation, Jesus' Resurrection, Angelic realms, prayers, divine guidance, healing, and the nature of life. There is so much that is of interest, and so much love and wisdom contained on every page, it's as if not a single word has been wasted, which I guess would be true of a book dictated by an Angel! Easy to read, yet deeply thought-provoking, even though I am not able to accept a few of the minor concepts, it seems as if more can be learned, and more understandings gained, each time it's read. Highly recommended, especially to those seeking more advanced awareness of the spiritual realities `behind the veil' of life as we know it on earth. INSPIRING AND EYE OPENING!

I am impressed by the candid truths unveiled by Michael the Archangel(thru Kelly), who lovingly guides us to the ultimate place of becoming enlightened, or the true Self. And that Love is truly what needs to be realized in this lifetime. He enlightens us on the way things will change upon the earth, and what life holds on the spiritual side. And how we continue to grow, or not if we choose, but it is our choice. Freedom to choose is a gift, and we are fortunate to have an Angel come forth and herald news we ALL can find comfort in by putting our faith in God and His Son...GREAT READ! It's not an old view of things, but what we need to hear because as a race, we are ready to know..I also could not put this book down!

It`s one of the best books i`ve ever read in my entire life. It helps me so much in changing my life for the best. I found enlightenment in it, and i could not put it down for i was hooked on every word. I found love and salvation in this book, it is really the most precious thing i could ever found in my whole life. I felt so much peace, love and light after i read the book that it is AMAZING! But the Boys managed to "spook" the Klan back, as the book recalls many humorous stories about how their FBI work managed to disintegrate the local KKK. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had created the Boys of Birmingham based on comments Dr. King made concerning how the FBI had no black agents, and that the southern FBI was "sympathetic" to racism. Hoover answered King's complaint by sending northern federal agents down into Birmingham whenever they committed a minor infraction. Becoming one of the "Boys" was actually considered to be a form of punishment, sending an agent down into "the Pits of Hell." But all the Boys eventually developed lifelong friendships as the result of this "punishment," with their families becoming very close. The Boys also were ordered to investigate Dr. King during his stays in Birmingham, becoming his "shadows" and being involved in the infamous Hoover tapes of King's "indiscretions." New information about these is told in this book for the first time, as also new information is given concerning the assassination investigation. The book tells how Saucier, as the lead field agent in charge of the Birmingham investigation, and the other Boys locate the identity of James Earl Ray, King's killer. And Saucier himself is the agent who discovers a way to directly locate Ray, which swiftly results in his arrest. Thrilling, gripping and hilarious at times, this book covers the exploits of Saucier and his fellow agents, including one man, the Dallas Duplicator, who's heavily involved in President Kennedy's assassination. He may have been the infamous "blond man" who picked up the fifth bullet in Dealey Plaza, site of the Kennedy murder and source of the gunfire. This agent was the same one who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy's presumed killer, and this book may also bring some new information concerning that investigation to light.

Excellent book

"Being raised in the Deep South, I am all too familiar with the story of Martin Luther King. His birthplace was part of our school field trips; we visited Ebenezer
Baptist Church and heard his mother play. His sister Christine was my college professor, and his daughter Bernice graduated in my college class. We all loved
and respected the King family in my hometown of Atlanta. The Birmingham Boys reflected the life of the Kings I knew. (They were) a family that did not want the spotlight, was human with all of our frailties, though they had been thrust into that spotlight by God to change the world. Seeing the life of King through a northern perspective with these dedicated men was quite amazing. Their devotion to preserving a man's life and tireless working to bring his murderer to justice was commendable, especially in a time where the "Negro" was as close to nothing that you could come to. They did their best and brought closure to a nation divided. This historical, controversial and yet well documented book will be an eye-opener to many, and a great resource to the rest."

The Boys of Birmingham exposes J. Edgar Hoover for the dangerous clown he was.

Told with courage, pain, humor, and compassion, The Boys of Birmingham brings us a powerful assessment and interprtation of the relationships between blacks and whites in the Deep South. Realistic and comprehensive concerning Martin Luther King's assassination and its swift investigation, this book is a must read for those who wonder about the relationships between whites and blacks. Yes, Virginia, there is a James Earl Rey, and he did murder MLK. If not for the exhaustive and brilliant investigation by The Boys of Birmingham, perhaps his killer would never have been found. Justice was done, and, thanks to the FBI, notwithstanding J. Edgar Hoovers reluctance to find the killer, the world would never have known his assassin. This book proves that, yes, there can be collaboraton and cooperation between blacks and whites - all to the good. This book is told in a timely manner, truthfully, and engagingly. Read it!

MLK and how his death was investigated - a great read for those who wondered who was actually most involved.

I liked this book for its hidden wisdom. At first, I thought it was childishly written. Then it dawned on me that the reason for that is the daughter of the man it's actually about. She was basically six years old at the time all these events transpired, the major ones anyway. PL Ryan, the Catholic white girl whose Dad, William Saucier, was the lead figure of The Boys of Birmingham, had experiences where her life was in steady mortal danger, without her having any real capacity to understand, at the time, the whys and wherefores of her experience. It makes for a very funny, humorous book at times, and a very sad and downhearted tragic book at other times. An examination of racism, the death of Dr. King and the thorough but brief assassination investigation culminates things toward the end of the book. About the Author
Otis A. Etheridge was born May 31, 1954 in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he currently resides. Graduating from Kellam High School, Otis obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree from Norfolk State University. He completed his Extensive Studies at Old Dominion University and the University of Virginia. Teaching was something Otis knew he wanted to do from an early age, always playing school with his brother and sister. Experienced, has been an educator for over thirty years, teaching Health and Physical Education to his young students. Fifteen years as a high school teacher, four years at the middle school level and eleven years at the elementary level. Not only enjoying teaching but also exploring his passion for coaching, he was the Assistant Coach of the Deep Creek High School Football team and the Deep Creek Varsity Boys/Girls Track team. He also held the position of Head Coach of the Deep Creek Varsity Girls Basketball team for twelve years. Amassing over that twelve year period, a record of 189 Wins and only 51 Losses. Under his direction, the Girls' Varsity Basketball team won five District Championships, won four Tournament Championships, one Eastern Regional Runner-Up Championship and one Eastern Regional Championship. Although he no longer coaches at the high school level, he still indulges in his passion by coaching his son's Pop Warner's football team. Considering it therapeutic, Otis has been writing for over 20 years. It is a way for him to express himself, channel his creativity and use his imagination. Daddy's Boy is his first published novel in 2009, although he has many more left to publish in the near future. He considers his most important accomplishment, being a father to his son, Kenneth. Notable Achievements are: Member of the Chesapeake Education Association, Virginia Education Association and the National Education Association. Four time: Coach of the Year for the Southeastern District and Two time: Coach of the Year for the City of Chesapeake

I am planning on going Mobile soon & had heard about this book and Ellen at the All American Grooming Show in 2009. I was suprised with how skinny the book was but let me tell ya, it's PACKED with AMAZING information that I can tell will set my grooming biz off to a GREAT start! She covers some things that I would never consider until it was too late, like how to schedule properly & which kinds of dogs NOT to groom. I highly recommend this book!

UPDATE: This book was the first I bought when considering going mobile in 2009. And nowI am booked out for months!!

I must say, Ellen's assistance, by creating this must-have, has been more help than my franchisor ever thought about providing. I think we all need to read & keep this book in our pockets at all times. It is also, very motivating! Ellen has hit the nail-on-the-head by creating a masterpiece that should have been created years ago. She touches on so many topics that we go through in our day-to-day grooming of these much loved furry kids! If I had read this book months before (if it had only been available), I would have ventured on my own instead of with a franchise in which all the money I make goes to them. I feel as though I am Ellen's friend & co-worker from the very 1st chapter! She is wonderful! I would love to be her ride-along! ;-)

Amazing!

This book is an amazing resource for anyone interested in mobile grooming. Ellen delves into the details involved in running a mobile pet grooming business, which will greatly assist someone considering this aspect of grooming. Her obvious love of what she does is contagious! More than that, however, this is a "how to" manual sure to make life significantly easier for those pursuing this particular profession.
